The lyrics in this song are fantastic. IIRC it was originally released on a charity album to raise funds to help people suffering with the conflict in Yugoslavia. One of the best anti war songs ever written in my opinion. The opening sample from the movie Cool Hand Luke is also perfect.

W. Axl Rose (vocals) of GNR was capable of writing a deep song about human conflicts... while most of his songs are raunchy and rather provocative 😂 'Civil War' was recorded in 1990 and was the last track w/ original drummer Steven Adler playing. Apparently, his addictions had messed up his skills and he couldn't perform cohesively in the studio (the drums here had to be stitched together after numerous takes) so he was fired... The Cult drummer Matt Sorum came in and recorded all the rest of the songs for the 'Use your illusion' albums and joined GNR in 1991.

I was not just kid with Tattoos Long Red/Strawberry blonde Hair anymore. I Wore my Black Fringed Leather jacket Couchos threaded Through The Fringe in just the right places Couchos are Round pieces of silver to Set it off Snake Cowboy Boot and a Black T- Shirt and tight Levi's and i was doing that Before Guns-n- Roses came out. This song was recorded and first aired on the radio in late 1989/early 1990. Almost 2 years before the Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 were released in the fall of 1991. I was in high school in Saginaw Michigan and remember it well
