"Well, the inmates petitioned for a concert, asking for BTO and DOA. After we played, we found out that the federal government gave them an entertainment grant. Considering that tax payer dollars fund such things, in retrospect, I think it was a mistake. Everyone deserves good music but not out of the pocket of the working man, in my opinion. They called it Jailhouse Rock. I believe it aired on Much Music (Canada's version of MTV). The only way I'd do it again would be if the inmates somehow raised the money themselves." Randy Bachman (August 2018)

I read the comments at the end of the video from Mr. Bachman regarding the funding for their performance being paid for by the Federal Government. My Name is Fred Chester and I was the government official that managed this event. The inmates of Saskatchewan Penitentiary did pay for the performances of BTO and DOA from their personal funds and Much Music as corporate sponsor for The Big Ticket Special. The Jailhouse Rock event (Saskatchewan Battle of The Bands) was a promotional event for up and coming bands in Saskatchewan and was funded through corporate sponsorship. Saskatchewan Penitentiary did provide the stage and lights. I apologize to Mr. Bachman for any misunderstanding or negative feed back he may have received...but he was paid by the inmates. In closing the positive impact that their group had left inmate population made working in the Maximum Security Prison much less tense for many months to follow.

Hi Fred. You know, the very fact that they took the time to play in the prison speaks volumes to me about who Bachman Turner Overdrive is as a group and individual people. Totally big name, kick ass rock and roll in a very modest setting. Prison ministry work is its own reward. Every minute spent in connecting with inmates will give you many multiples of grace in return. Job well done, my friend. In what year did this prison concert take place?

Wow man that's probably one of the best real Rock'n'roll jailhouse stories I've heard.
I'm not sure what went down about the band not being happy.
But I'm sure the inmates were.
You're a good man with good intentions.
I hope either the prison, the band or inmates thanked you personally... eventually.
I'll have to re read your comment.
It's restored my faith in humanity.
Prisons are not a great environment.
Compassion and concern would be viewed as weakness.
Not me brother it took balls of steel and a true Rock'n'roll heart to get that done ( especially with the constraints of power and authority figures dying to take it all down).
Which reminds me. Please watch Hail Hail Rock'n'roll DVD - either one of the bonus editions with amazing extra footage.
Check out what happened when Chuck took the film's production crew to his old prison for an impromptu day visit .
You'll know what I mean lol.
      Cheers from Australia

What a great event you all put on Fred❣️ ‼️ I'm sitting here at OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Chicago with my mother-in-law, who is battling pneumonia, flu, Covid..on top of fighting cancer..I know she feels kind of imprisoned. This transcends time. So thank you, BTO and all the prisoners who made it happen. Does feel kind of impossible nowadays!

Great performance! They were one of favorite bands in the 70s and I was lucky to see them a few times back then. Still rocking to their music 50 years later.

Randy Bachman and the whole band. I've been rocking with them since the 70's. They are playing my favorite songs here. TO THIS DAYin 2024, I still love their music and STILL rock to it...., when m joints aren't hurting :) Those boys in prison must have DUG this concert!

Randy said his father used to harp on him telling him you have to take care of business.
His optometrist father thought because he was a musician he was not on a productive path.
Randy proved otherwise by writing the song taking care of business and employing two of his brothers.
