  • This is an Apex Tool Group item, it is a decent iron but the halo light ring is a mistake as it hardly put any light towards the tip where you actually need it and the fact that to get the 7 year warranty you need a stamp on the warranty card form the retailer which is a big hassle.

    I went for military spec class on this and amazing how much prep work was needed from wipe down tools with IPA to clean all tools and how much solder to use we used wire wrap a lot but some things must be soldered and without the class it's a no go. Be surprised at how much is still wire wrap I was at a radar base and it was common.

    You should look in the Pinecil v1/v2. 30 bucks with silicone usb c cord.
    Up to 88 watts with 21 V ps. heats to 350 C (662 F) in 20 sec.
    Digital temperature sensor from 250-450 C.
    Accelerometer/ hall effect sensor to detect idle then sleeps at 250 C to save the tip and then auto turns off eventually if/when u forget about it.
    They make a bunch of tips you can get on amazon/ali express /wherever. the bevel edge and the big chunky one are great. even runs on 20 V power tool batteries.
    The beauty of is you can customize w/e you want or just plug it in , hit one button and it works. I grabbed an old 19v laptop brick and soldered a plug on it and bam.
    When u see how many useful features they get you for 30 bucks the Weller kinda pales for $33 with tech from the 70's.

    I just purchased the 30 watt at Home Depot. I thought the lights on it was a good feature and easy to tell when its on. I got it for a small repair on my kids eye glasses and it worked just fine for me.

    I had a 3/8 ratchet more that 15yrs old that lost a forward/reverse lever, I emailed the Apex tool companyto buy a new bolt and lever/switch, they sent me a brand new flex head wrachet free of charge. So I had no issues with their warranty.

    They do not heat up and melt the wire

    ive been either using these or the radioshack ones since i was 13, but when i finally got my (admittedly cheaper) weller solder station, it was a game changer ESPECIALLY when working on guitar wiring because its so easy to burn out pots because everything is grounded on the volume pot and it would take ages even with an 80w but as soon as i got a temp control soldering iron it was easy. always use a flat tip as well

      @@thinkingimpaired5663 same, i was thinking about it and it was pretty much my intro into the diy world because i was able to buy (for an insane amount of money, sure) resistors and caps and random tools for electronics that no other place has really taken the place of since. it was awesome back in the early 2000s

      @@darkinertia2 I would gladly pay the money for a local store for electronic components now. I just put aside my projects now until I can find a trashed device that I can scavenge parts from. I hate internet orders of any part.

      The reason a lot of Southern stations work so well is not really due to the temperature control although that is great it's because they tend to have 100 W heating elements so when you are touching something that soaks away heat and has a huge element to be able to boost the temperature quickly

      I worked at Radioshack ~2009 and by that point they only cared about selling cell phones and accessories. You were literally expected to try to sell a cell phone to Everyone who walked in the door regardless of what they came for.
      And then upsell extra warranties, even on Radioshack products that already had lifetime warranties smh.
      I actually was yelled at for helping a customer locate an electronics part in the parts bins
      Had I been their ideal employee i wouldn't have wanted to deal with that everytime i came in for a 1-5 dollar part.

    Where can I buy the tips?

    I agree the light isn't great but most the time I got plenty of light on my work so I normally don't care if the lights work what I care about is how well the soldering iron works

    Hello again Catus Maximus and Tiny
    Thank you for another Great Video 👍 Question for you, I have never bought anything from Apex Tools, is this issue of getting the warranty process, their normal business practices model?
    Again thank you

    Okay I have a stupid question. Why buy something like this compared to a two piece system like a hakko 888d?

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is just a Basic soldering iron a hakko would be much more expensive that's why people buy these just as a home user iron

      @@CatusMaximus thanks for the response. So far it’s been all that I need. Just wondering why people spend bug bucks since my cheapo seems to work fine.

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Expensive station types are nice in particular they have a temperature sensor so when you touch the tip to whatever you're trying to melt it automatically increases power to maintain a constant temperature which is their biggest advantage

      I still have a really old Weller magnetic that has done loads of work for 30 years…. Only now a problem because the collar that holds on the tip has corroded through…. I can’t believe the new ones would be in the same class at all.
