I really regret not going to see Bug and Friedkin's on stage interviews/Q&As at the time, I don't know why I didn't pay more attention at the time. Kicking myself now he's passed away and can't go and hear his words and presence in person.
I think Rampage is very overlooked, as is The Guardian. Two films that kind of slipped below the radar, but both go to show, along with the classics that he made, that he is truly one of the greatest ever directors.
seen The Guardian when it came out. never in a million years would i have thought it was directed by the same guy who made The Exorcist. The Guardian's so pedestrian...it's a TV movie, at best. i think i've seen bits and pieces of Rampage...so i have to go back and watch that one from start to (hopefully) finish.
I've got a question for long-term fans of Kermode and Mayo. About 10 years ago, they had an American in the studio and when the subject of The Exorcist came up, Mark started talking about William Peter Blatty and mentioned that he's a Catholic but this American man misunderstood and interjected by shouting out "William Friedkin isn't Catholic, he's Jewish!" Can anyone remember who this man was?
this movie is amazing. just like he says it gives more questions than answers, but goddamn I'd like to pick his brain. I think there was some contrivance about it though, not just that irrational conspiratorial paranoia. so many themes soo good!!
Just heard he died and thought about Mark. RIP.

Bug was fantastic, his best film in years and years and years!
Excellent points about weird audiences. Miss ya Billy!

Not to correct Friedkin but the play was Waiting for Lefty

this might be a dumb moment but whats with the 15 straight reviews of xmen?
Ethan Gillies ?
I think Mark was being subconsciously bias when he enjoyed Bug. I thought it sucked.
