Black or African American: A person with origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.
White: A person with origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.
Egypt, Tunsisa, Algeria, Morocco, would be classified as white, even though they are not white. They even classify Mexicans as white and most of them are indigenous.

They all have fair/white skin, but have different phenotypes. So it makes them different groups of people no matter what their skin color is. Somali people have a dark skin just like Indians and other Africans do, but they have a different own unique phenotype, everyone can spot a Somali from a far and separate them from the rest. But you can’t do that with a Gambian for example.

Yes, Somali go by tribe/ethnicity as well as all other Africans. West Africans don't go the color of their skin. Yet, Somali have no problem labeling them black. In America both West Africans and Somali's are viewed as black.

America is the world's leading super power and thus, on the world stage, the norms they set, is what the rest if the world follows.

What goes on in Africa is quite literally, uncinsequential.
The countries in Africa are as a result of how the continent was divided up into parts by colonists. So even your nationality is determined by the dominant western society.

He missed the mark on a couple things. He said Black is used because Black Americans don't know where they can from unlike African and Caribbeans. Why people don't understand Black Americans and Caribbeans are the same people. If one group doesn't know where they came from neither does the other. I also think people forget the U.S. and Canada are not homogeneous countries like Somalia, Nigeria, Germany and Sweden. Anyone can be born in the states and be an American full stop. People are usually addresses by their ethnicity ie Somali-American after they detect you aren't African American.

A German man literally created the concept of the human race lol. Hitler offed the Jews because he felt they weren't "White" enough. So im not sure that German example is the best. You can fight the racial labels but race is not about how you identify yourself it is about how others identify you in context of a larger grouping. Italian Somaliland was also a protectorate until 1905 when the Italians signed an agreement that some parts (Southern Somalia not all) would become a colony. These areas where largely uninhabited and undeveloped so the Italian brought some Congolese “Workers” to work for the Italians. This is some of the reasons the Somalis revolted. However compared to Somaliland and Djibouti respectfully the northern Somali coast were less influenced by European powers.
Although modern Somaliland was a protectorate, the British had a lot of influenced since they bribed many of the locals with money. This caused the East to lead a resistance movement (Dervish) which decreased British influenced and also forced the brits to maintain a protectorate relationship rather than a colonial one such as the Juba valley colony.
The juba valley (Jubbada Hoose) was part of British East Africa however the Somalis where treated differently to other inhabitants due to their proximity to other Somali tribes which could lead another revolt. An example is the Head Tax which Somalis where exempt from while other tribes where subject to.
It's Western culture that put people into racial categories of black. This handsome young man could identify as Somali but the fact remains in the U.S he will be viewed as black regardless.

Someone decided to categorize people in races based on features like skin color, hair texture, excluding things like cultural heritage and place of birth. Black is one of these category aka race. Most somali falls into this category: Black.

2.Ethinicity: arab or somali or something else
3.Nationality: Somali
4.Place of birth: Somalia, Africa.

The issue everyone has their own understanding of what races are, it’s a theory. That being said, Australian aboriginals are not seen as “black” by most people just because of their colour because some argue that being black is not just about skin colour, including. People of Papua New Guinea, Filipinos and Sri Lankans etc. Others even argue that people with very light skin due to being intermixed with European and African American for example are still seen as black so it’s not all about skin colour but phenotype.
The same people who came up with this race theory didn’t consider Somalis as “Black” which is another way of saying “Negroid” due to having a different phenotype, it’s more about the skulls rather than the skin colour. Aboriginals would fall under “Austroloid” and Chinese people would fall under “Mongloid” for example. The racial theory doesn’t make sense anyway and Somalis have always identified themselves with their tribal ethnic name which is Somali & thats what they have always been known us, it doesn’t make sense to tell people to strip their whole identity away that they called themselves and replace it with a crayon colour.
Most Somalis don’t subscribe to irrelevant racial theories, so this comment is unnecessary.
Using the term black only makes sense in the United States because we don’t have anything else to identify with.

The definition for Black is literally mostly about being African. Therefore, We African Americans cannot hog Black to ourselves. It is a race that encompasses many ethnicities, African American is just one of them.

@TheoThaTruth Many of the people from these homogeneous nations do not refer to themselves as black in their respective nations. This is why some somalians think that they are not Black. The problem with race is that most people think that it is about how you self identify, but it is about how others identify you in a context of a larger group. This is why to some somalians they are not Black but to everyone else they are. The crazy thing is they do not have to travel out of the continent to see this, just look at how Blacks are treated in North Africa. Once they step outside of what is deemed Sub-Saharan Africa, they automatically become Black to the rest of the world. Not many people know the difference between or even care whether a Black African is from North, South, East, or West Africa. They all get labeled as Black and most of the time treated accordingly. Some Somalians tend to think themselves better because of their hair and the religion has a lot to do with that as well (the Arabtization that comes with practicing of Islam). I will say that the Somalians I know personally in America know they are Black, and that may just be because there is no place like America, except maybe Europe, that will give you a quick ni**a wake up call.

In my opinion, Somali is an ethnicity, and Somalian is the nationality. It is possible to be Somalian without being Somali, for example if I migrate to Somalia, I would be Somalian without being Somali. Also there are Somali from Kenya. Those Somalis are not Somalian but Kenyans.
