This is simply the best damn mower EVER PERIOD... !
I started out 35 years ago with a Honda commercial mower , it had a fixed 2 speed , I forget the hp but it had a clutch system even back then.
I paid $700. From a dealer, kept it until the clutch needed replacement, and traded it in on a 1st. Generation Honda Harmony ...no clutch, 2 speed, plastic deck and drove it right into the ground. Then switched to a John Deere JS63C which was a 3 speed Beast of a Mower .... easy to fix .... went about 17 yrs. LOL....
Went to a Husqvarna 4wd .... felt great out of the box but the drive system was a nightmare, fell apart after 2 yrs.
Back to Honda..... Got one of their early Thumb Drive Versa Mow Mowers , but couldn't control it at all on hills....
Sold IT .... Got a bottom line Honda single speed HR ??? 216 160 GCV...m
Too fast for my lawn, and underpowered ....
FINALLY .... The Hydrostatic Transmission .... Oh God there is a Heaven .....!!!
    HRX2175KHYA ....YES !!! 190CC..... 🥳🥳🥳
And yeah ..... this one will be the last , it will outlast me !
Anything after this will be me sitting on the porch watching the Yard Service do the Lawn ...Lol....!!!😂

Oh yes, this thing is a beast. Mine is a K5 as well. As I stated in my walk around video I did on this mower when I bought it the K6 (GCV200 model) had just came out and Pytash Tractor Sales still had a surplus of the K5’s and didn’t order any of the k6’s yet but the owner gave me a really great deal. $729.00 out the door. Glad I went with this one because recently I’ve seen reports of the automatic compression release mechanism on the camshaft failing on the gcv200’s. And now that Honda isn’t manufacturing anymore walk behind mowers I intend to hold onto this puppy. Only way ANYONE will get this from me is pry it out of my cold dead hands.

Recently got a used HRX217 that I believe was made in 2012 and love it. Almost the perfect mower in my opinion. Just like you I also used to have an HR214 that I got used and probably had for about 5 years. It was also a great mower, very well built and cut extremely well . Reminds me a lot of the HRX217. My only problem with the HR214 that I had was the transmission went out a year or two after I got it and it was a pretty heavy mower to push with the drive not working. The other issue I had was it would smoke like a chimney upon startup but always cleared up after running for about 5-10 seconds. Probably would have kept had it not been for those two issues. The HRX217 is a great replacement for the old HR214 though. Also you talked about the HR214 being made in the 80’s which is correct. 1983-89 to be exact. Then was replaced by the HR215 which was made from 1989-94.

I got an hrx 217 hya back in 2018 and it sounds the same as the toro recycler 22 inch. I love the hydrostatic transmission. It is heavy to lift the handle and it does cause too much for me I am a skinny guy, and was heavy to push. Price was $729. An issue was when I pull the rope it up it smokes a lot. When you attach a bag it is heavier to push around.

Oh yes. That hydrostatic transmission is a game changer. That and the blade brake clutch.

I bought a Honda hrx217hya with the 200 engine. Kinda pissed since it takes 3-4 pulls to always start. I had the overhead valve leak and the speed was too slow when I first got it. Never had issues with Hondas before until this machine
