  • While crossing the Nullarbor in January 2024 I happened to capture some vision of Tesla automatic wiping in action - or rather not in action in our Model Y.
It was running software version 2023.44.30.8 at the time.
Tim Zaman, the ex-head of AI at Tesla, jokingly called it "Full Self Wiping" in a tweet on X. I think this video gives a good example of what he is talking about.
Stay to watch from the 2 minute mark, you will see 31 seconds go by while two large trucks go past me without the auto wipers being activated.
    02:07 31 seconds between wipes
We are doing a 35,000 km+ figure “8” lap of Australia in our Tesla model Y RWD. The planned route is Canberra - Port Augusta - Darwin- Broome - Perth - Port Augusta - Alice Springs - Mount Isa - Townsville - Sydney - Melbourne - Hobart. We are doing our lap slow nomading style and don’t plan to finish until Dec 2024

Looking forward to your journey this year. From what I read in pre-statement; it sounds like you are off for adventure! ~Safe travels, sir.

Thx for the best wishes. It sure is an adventure. We just passed a 20,000km milestone last week with many more to come.

If it's dark and raining heavily and you have to take your eyes off the road to change the wiper speed it's a dangerous system to use. The wiper functions does not stay on the screen long enough (surely you want them to stay on the screen when you are using the wipers) and If you are using your indicators at the same time the blind spot monitoring covers the functions. Just imagine driving one of these cars in heavy rain without having instructions first - you have to pull over and watch a TH-cam video to learn how to use them. Then there is the speed limit data which is wrong half the time. You are right, get the basics right first Tesla.

Agree, system should be intuitive. I'm sure that's Tesla's goal, with auto "everything", but when auto "everything" fails, the fall back needs to be how wipping has worked for decades on cars.

Funny, I've always just adjusted the timing on the stalk...Tesla doesn't have that?

Nope. There's a button at the end of the indicator stalk, soft press for a wipe, hard press to clean the windscreen. Thats it for physical buttons.
The default setup when you first use the car is auto wipers, same for the headlights.
When you press the stalk button a menu pops up on screen that has the more traditional speed options, however I find that a pain to use. TBH I'm okay with the no button/auto approach, but it needs to mostly work, right now it does not.

@@AUSY8 Wow, how lame, hey? One thing for certain, either the software is sloppy, or (more likely) the stalk was had overseas for a fraction of the price. U.S. automakers are notorious for using everyday controls interchangeably. (Others like Japan are recently following suit, so it's not just us. Worse, it was kept quiet for a long time; back in the late 60's/early 70's companies would do this with "antiquated" parts for the sake of a few pennies on the dollar. They were pulled over the coals when Joe Public found out. For me, Elon's fucking genius one day, and a complete moron the next, much like other visionary's from the past. Good content, sir. By the way, I noticed your sub count looks like you're just getting started, so I'm helping you along by subscribing. ~Best

Elon is banging on about them being fixed again. Jury is out: www.teslaoracle.com/2024/04/23/elon-musk-tesla-auto-wipers-fixed-in-fsd-v12-3-3-owners-report-it-still-has-issues/

I know. Down here we have some serious issues that need fixing :)

Tesla claims to be more of a software company than a car company. After owning 2 Tesla’s for the last 4 years, I can confirm that they absolutely suck at software. Every single system suffers from poor software quality.

It's not great, but it's also not terrible. The cars are mostly software with, in my case a single motor. What do they say: "An iPad on a golf cart". I'm okay with most of the software stack, but auto wipers are something car companies solved years okay, we are going backwards right now with the 3/Y software.
