One Hundred Pipers (jig) in G and A on D/G melodeon

- Scottish jig One Hundred Pipers played in G and then in A on a D/G Serenellini Lady melodeon / diatonic button accordion.
If you play D/G box and haven't done much playing in A then this is a great one to try - no G# required and if you're stuck with thirds in your chords then the E chords are easily avoided. And in G it's a great beginner tune to get used to going over to the D row for the low Es.

Please explain to me how this works. You're playing the tune in G first, and then you're changing the key to A by pressing the button on the right hand part of it. But then what about the chords? Will they not be out of tune too? I don't imagine you have a palette of chords so wide you can accompany for that without a mechanical keychange too.
The change with the stop on the right hand isn't related to the key change. That's just to add in an extra voice. The chords used in the first key are G, C and D; in the second key A, D and E. All these chords are on the left hand of a standard DG box (thirds out to allow the E to be used as a major).
@@paulyoungfolk So the keychange is entirely based on your play? I imagined that the button would change between two voices, one being the entire G scale, the other the entire A scale. This makes a lot of sense, thank you once more!

The advice I always give is if you want to play exclusively traditional Irish music and play it in the most traditional way then get a B/C, but if you want to do anything else as well (which would include things like Leaving Of Liverpool the way I play it) then a D/G box is far more versatile.
23 buttons are a slight advantage on a C#/D where that gets you the occasionally useful low G, but for a B/C or D/G it doesn't really matter.
@@paulyoungfolk But isn't Irish music traditionally always played in D? So why then, get a box in B/C?
(Also just to get things cleared up on my end, having a B/C means you can switch between playing B scale and C scale, right?)
Ah, BC accordion FAQ #1...
Yes, a BC accordion gives you the scale of B on one row and C on the other, but between those two scales that gives you all the notes in all keys, so for D you mostly just use F# and C# on the B row and the other notes on the C row.
It's by far the most common type of accordion played by Irish musicians so you can be pretty confident that it's suitable for playing traditional Irish music.

I live in Scotland where most players use B/C or B/C/C#. I’d much prefer a D/G but It’s said by some that it can’t be played in A. That’s obviously not true. I wondered (BC accordion FAQ #2?!) whether a complete beginner (ie me) who’d like to play Scottish and English tunes could, at some point, learn to play tunes in A on a D/G box? Many thanks for your help.
Yes, DG works pretty well for many tunes in A. G# in the melody can often be switched for an E or B without damaging the tune too much. And if later on you want to be able to play in more keys you can always upgrade to a 2.5 row DG which (with the right layout) will allow you to play in B flat, F, C, G, D, A and E and as many minor keys.

The Melodeon net forums has the key layouts of most melodeons, including the bases.
What do you do for Gsharp notes?
Don't need any for this tune. For other tunes in A swapping in an E or a B often works fine.
