    Im taking the opportunity catch up on other projects and will resume the N gauge build shortly. This video outlines some of those projects, including some loco failures and my proposals to repair them. I do show the mill in situ and explain future plans for the area to ‘complete’ the scene.
    Lastly, I explain the next project, the reason for doing this next. Whilst I do have some ideas for the situation, I’d like to hear your thoughts, especially how to hide the exit of Dinting through the Piccadilly backscene and the link line which allows trains to leave and exit the main line from the carriage shed.

    Hi John, just catching up with your videos. I think the microphone sounds really good. You’ve had a few problems with some locomotives recently but the mill looks great in place. Plenty of work still to do, I do agree about the idea of a black removable curtain to hide the wiring. Look forward to catching up on your other videos later. Thanks for sharing. Roy.

    Hi John - that mill is superb now that it's in position. Can totally see why you want to get some scenery on the large bare baseboard area. I wouldn't begin to advise you on what to do as I'm sure you'll come up with a solution that works for you. Hope you got your loco's back in action on the OO layout. Cheers Euan

      Thanks Euan, glad you like it. I’ll see what suggestions come in but thinking about using gantries and maybe cable bridges to hide the holes in the backscenes. Time will tell.
      I’ve been working on rocket, testing testing testing all looked good till I put it on the layout for DCC test. SHORT!! Arghhhhg. Works on DC, but thinking I may have wired the socket incorrectly. I’ll have a look shortly.

    Hi John the mill looks great in position as i knew it would, and once youve finished tweeking all the joins it'll be superb. As for the bare baseboard areas id really need to think long and hard, try a few things see if i liked it then go with one. I may even have a train journey somewhere to see if i could get an idea that might work, with modellers licence of course. Hope you get those locos fixed, I'm sure you will, cheers Andy

      Thx Andy I’m really pleased so far with the mill.
      Regarding the open area I thought which bridges would trains from new mills cross: Goytcliffe viaduct. Early thoughts but it could work.

    Hi John,
    Great to see the mill in position and there is a man called John who will I am sure be able to intigrate it in completely to the layout. Its a shame those locos played up but glad you found out the fault and can fix them even I am sure the one that has been dumped in the siding unlooked at. Sorry but cannot help with the scenes in the very busy section as not an idea in the little brain of mine but you do have some from YT'ers who know the area so hope they come up trumps for you. And the class 43s look great a good buy indeed.
    Cheers Robert.

    Here’s a suggestion for that section. There’s a line joining from the right, as Mayfield is beside Piccadilly you could continue the approach to the carriage shed (as Longsight) but with modellers license you can hide the bridge with a wall or building or something so it wouldn’t be as noticeable.

    @vincenthuying98 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Dear John, on the mike, I must say I noticed the drop in volume some weeks ago. Nevertheless, I don’t think those Boya mikes are an improvement. The sound is way too dull, kinda bland and has a signature tone fade from the noise cancellation. Simply like your normal recordings way better. Never mind the background noise. Your neighbor mowing his lawn may just be a good and odd ‘background reminder.’
    Love the mill in situ. Awesome how it already blends in. Pity there’s much scenery to be redone.
    On the necessary crossover for your layout and the scenery around the mainline; may be a good idea to put a motorway kind of viaduct over it, that will significantly hide the‘unnatural’ junction.
    I know it’s one of my pet peeves, and I still like your background design and painting very much, on both sides where it concerns the divider, but I humbly think you should try out to cut off the air (on maybe a copy paste temporary backdrop) to see if the hills on the one side and the city scape on the other can coincide, or even strengthen each other’s illusion of perspective and depth. Especially where the colors beyond the artificial horizon will be able to play a role in your viewing angles. Also think it will greatly simplify the transition on the ‘crossover’ (pun intended) where all these scenes come together on a visual important part of the layout.
    To me it sounds a bit odd that your small steam loco would have burnt out from that short rake of wagons. Read some comments on the 6 pin quality of the rocket, it seems a bit of an odd choice for such an open structure locomotive and tender. A dry motor and a bad wire job, sounds like a Monday delivery. Cool OO purchase! Cheerio

      Please dont about the backscene the two sides will work, generally foliage on the countryside section and it will be a representation of the line out of Piccadilly on the other.
      Sorry you dont like the mic, but trying to respond to everyone to suit is not an easy task. Im not in a position to spend hundreds for the Rode mic, (happy to receive one though Vincent, lol). Ive had positive comments about it so I will be persuing it. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

    Hi John! Seems like you've got a lot of loco maintenance to perform, which is always a bit of an annoyance, especially when things weren't done right in the first place by the manufacturer! The Mill is looking absolutely fabulous mate! You must be extremely pleased with how it's fitted in with its surroundings! I'm looking forward to seeing how you go about extending the back scene out of Piccadilly! Regarding hiding the "mess" below the baseboards - with my aquarium stands, I use magnets to hold up a length of black cloth! The magnets mean I can quickly remove the cloth to gain access, and it's easy to replace too! I'm planning on using a similar technique below the baseboards on Shelfington too! All the best, Ian.

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good idea thank you. I’ll have a think around the magnet idea.
      Yes 3 locos now discovered 121 has lost drive. That is a fairly quick easy fix. I know exactly what’s happened. Jenny Kirk did a video on exactly this problem.

  • @Elvenhome

    Really good to see the Mill in its position. Not surprising that while you were working around there a few other things are skewwiff. As you say it only needs sorting out. The views across do look really impressive. I did like the idea of Cauldron wagons, presumably with Withypoo as the driver. I don't know what's out there for OO gauge but I wondered about an Austerity Tank J94. Those little devils have amazing pulling power in real life. As for your scenic conundrum, it is tricky. The only thought i had was to use the line coming across the station throat of Piccadilly to continue the backscene along it (effectively turning a corner and not going over it) as a scenic break with the trains passing under a bridge (another 3D printing challenge for you). That might make it easier for you to put entirely different scenery, especially a countryside scene, the other side and save you having to tie in what you do both sides of the line crossing the entry to Piccadilly. Best of luck in deciding what you want to do. Stephen

    Hi John, certainly lots going on in this video, The Mill looks brilliant and regarding the gap, nothing a bit of foliage can cover up. In regards to the wiring near the mill, it may need a bit of tidying but I'd simply just add a black skirt at the bottom like you see at railway exhibitions, this will then naturally focus the eye on what they should be seeing. In regards to the backscene what you have already surmised sounds good, but I'm sure you'll sort it out one way or another. Hope you can fix the poorly locos. All the best Tony.

      @piccadillymodelrailways  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hi John- The overhead shot does show what a great job you have made of the mill and how well it fits into the layout.
    If you are worried about the mess of wiring then do not look at mine !! although a major tidying up is on the cards.
    Nice new additions and loco failures are annoying but you will fix them to run better .
    Cheers Kev

      @piccadillymodelrailways  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Kev, thanks for your kind words. I’m glad how it’s ended up. I do want to get the wiring tidied, that area has had so many changes these things happen.
      You wouldn’t believe it the class 121 lost drive. Nearly done that, need to reattach pickups and hopefully….
      Rocket is a disaster atm, keeps shorting. I think I’ve solved the issue and another short. Quite frustrating.

    The new mics definitely help with the sound - I have bought a similar set up which plugs into the back of my camera - just not got around to setting it up - worried it may pick up my breathing issues lol. The Mill scene is awesome but we know that you have the skills to hide the bits your not happy with - it just gives us so much more to watch and admire!
    Regards
    Steve

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So very kind Steve thank you. The mic shouldn’t pick up breathing, clip it to your clothing around a foot away from your mouth. You can get a fluffy cover for mic if need be. They are used to stop wind.

  • @m10cachilles43
    @m10cachilles43 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Jon,
    1. New mic is better and clearer.
    2. I have two ideas for that section. One the junction for the Manchester Port/Styal line off the Piccadilly mainline.
    Two, it's a bit out of sequence as it's after Longsight, but if you added a double track line coming off to the left of the curve as the Buxton branch, the track plan is very similar to Edgeley junction just south-east of Stockport.

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, I will look at Edgeley jcn, but I won’t have space for two lines. I might be able to use aspects

  • @keithshayle7027
    @keithshayle7027 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The trickiest problem looks to be how you disguise the single line going over Piccadilly from Dinting. I would agree with your tree idea as being the most viable option. If it were me I would start work on extending the back scene first, and then ideas regarding the curved doouble track section might become clearer.
    Eitherway certainly a scenic challenge, which you seem to enjoy coming up with the answers to!! It will be interesting to see it all take shape.
    Btw I would certainly build the scenary up between the Mill board and viaduct, and as you say screen off the wire's...
    Finally the new HST power cars look excellent!! And the scene when (forgive me if I'm wrong) the Class 158 DMU leaviny the station in the OO Gauge layout - wonky lamp post aside😂, looked great!

    • @piccadillymodelrailways
      @piccadillymodelrailways  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
      Yes, exactly right in building the back scene first as everything comes off this. The new section needs to be removable , easy job.
      After the tree idea I realised another electrification gantry would be about on the backscene area so that with a mast maybe etc sorted! Thanks for your response

    Could part of the layout without scenery be modelled as Broadbottom?. The stop before Dinting. If you are going to model Glossop and Hadfield are you now going to put in the missing side of the triangle of track at Dinting? That goes goes between Glossop and Hadfield?. Wonderful job with the mill.

      @piccadillymodelrailways  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, unfortunately I cannot fit the third rail at Dinting triangle due to space. Glossop will be at the larger area towards the front of the layout and Hadfield at the back. The train will pass by the opposing station but not go through it. Thx

      Absolutely, I’m trying to get a hold of barrier wagons. Two types I’ve seen cargo wagons and steel carrier type wagon, both in two tone grey. Both are very expensive, time will tell. Otherwise I’ll try and get some EMT mark 3s as if it’s running a n excursion. Seen that few times.

      Hi John. Try and look for recent videos of Severn Valley Railway. Several Railadventure power units have been parked up there from time to time and there are videos of blue barrier wagons and grey cargo wagons. I think the cargo wagons repainted are your best bet for now.

    John, yes! I remember the previous proposals for the mill area. Night and day does not do the result justice, but you know what I mean!❤. You are skilful enough at drawing the eye, but trees, banking, sloping bridges, and roads can provide a break. In the industrial northwest, an obelisk building or industrial installation can trick the eye. Great outcome. Good luck with the locos. I've a couple you could fix! Regards, Stephen.

    That mill looks amazing in situ ! Very well done.
    Regarding that mess of wiring beneath -- what city doesn't have a chaotic nest of subterranean infrastructure ? By happy accident, you've captured that. :)
    The "tree arch" idea to disguise the hole in the back-scene for the line coming out of Dinton and crossing the throat leading to Piccadilly is an excellent idea. I would suggest starting that "arch" near where the bare white baseboard is now.
    Your new microphone works very well -- less echo-y, more clear sound. :)

    The microphone really makes a difference; your voice has a better resonance and doesn't sound slightly tinny as it could at times. Ideas for the curved track: maybe it's running around a lake which is why it is curved. You don't need to model a whole water feature but just the Lakeside adjacent to the tracks. Maybe the odd boat resting on the mud.

      Great idea thank you, as that ties up with developing ideas. Thinking of modelling Goytcliffe viaduct, which the trains cross to / from New Mills Cntrl. The river Goyt passes through. Think I could make it work. Early stages.
