Hey, great video. One question though. At 2:13 you show a parts image of the Steering Shaft Clamp and Steering Box Lock Plate. Where does the Steering Box Lock Plate go?
Very helpful. Thanks. I have a situation where i can turn really good to the right but my turns to the left are terrible. I do have some questions of alignment adjustment from "total out of spec" to correct. Do you know how many turns from lock to lock is the stock vw gear box ? I guess that would vary depending on steeinr wheel size but im trying to get an idea of why im having this weird turning issue. Looking for a factory service manual now.
You can turn it counter clockwise until it dead stops. Count the rotation while turning it clockwise until it hits a dead stop. Then divide the rotations by 2. Whatever number you calculate, begin to turn it to that number, that should be your center. Or you can visually see the center.
I have a spare steering box I have play in the original it was supposedly adjusted to the max, before I replace the gearbox the donor box what kind of gear oil do I use and what to check before I attempt to install
Thank you, I'm guessing the donor steering box is OEM I didn't look for the VW emblem but examining it how would I know if there's any adjustment needed before installing it? When I attempt to drain the grease it's probably never been changed should I use some kind of cleaner and drain it again before I put fresh grease? What grease would be the best? Thank you so much and best regards
I replace the steering couple on my Ghia for the 1st time. I did something wrong. Steering is way too tight and turn signal lever only moves with the steering wheel. Any thoughts?
It’s binding somewhere. I would replace the bearing that is in the steering column by the steering wheel. Tighten the steering column and turn signal assembly. More than likely the new steering coupler is a little thinner which would shorten the steering shaft causing binding. I think your coupler is fine, which points to the steering column bearing.

Oh yes it goes over the shaft clamp, then you insert the bolt, peel back the steering lock plate over the bolt head and nut to prevent spinning.
Love the old school dash!
My plan is to leave it alone but, add some gauges later on. Thanks for the reply.
Thanks for sharing, I am just wondering why the bolts are so long?
Another great video thanks for sharing !!

Nice job TY
wich master cylinder brake do are you using to use that reservoir? i must cut my remote reservoir and finish that mess!
Oh I used an oversized dual master cylinder which has 2 inputs. I believe 67 and up had dual inputs in which the aftermarket reservoir will fit.
good work man! great year bug!
Thank you for the comment.
Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work.
What source do you use to obtain German parts, especially steering and braking?
Wolfsburg West and JBugs have a good rep.

I wouldn’t use gear oil. I would use general grease.

Hi. Are there any splines in the outer tube of the column that slide into that new chrome piece you fitted.?
Slightly. The bolt the lays across the flat is the driver.
So are there no splines on the pipe that comes down from the steering wheel?
There are, which increase the grip.
Id add a bearing to botom of shaft column to align perfect i have one top and bottom,,cheap and simple
Can it be replaced/fixed without removing the gas tank?
It would be very tight but it can be done. Removing the gas tank is easy though.
@@FixinBugsNStuff yea I was informed that it is. Thanks for the info. Great video. 👍
