You should make this famous and make a Flute complete set with an instructional small book and dvd and start playing the Flute Chinese style. i would buy it. I really like it
LOL! I am nowhere near a pro man, I self taught on this thing and just do it for fun~ lots of better music out there~ but I must admit that the ending is quite nice with my new hardware! it's the hardware's magic! LOL!

***** hahaha! well, selling these things is not my interest for now, really not wanna spend the time for these things now, but maybe in the future we will think about that~ selling dizi can be very tricky too, cuz they can crack during shipment and you lost a few bucks! Recorders are cheap and often very durable cuz the material is not like bamboo~ :) I used to have like 5 recorders in different sizes too, damn that is cool eh? Imagine a recorder that can produce sound of a Xiao kinda tone?

I just bought mine and didn't knew what the dek and membraine where for so this video helped me a lot. I was wondering how to put my hands in all these holes. Guess 6 makes a lot more easier to learn. I tried to use the glue but ended up breaking it into some pieces but think i managed it. Tri to play it now

I am learning it myself because i live in Norway and the dizi is really unknown here. I got the G-key dizi.
Kinetic1423 I see! Did you buy any Dimo (membrane) and the glue? I have a G here too, it's very high pitch compare to the D but it's still very fun to play! Different vibe! You got yourself some books too? A little tip here, if you just start it on the DIY route, try the tape method instead of the membrane first. The tape should be the thinner tape, not the thick scotch tape (translucent). Try something thinner, the clear tape(not packing tape!). Those will do the job and give you at least a stable sound so you know that if you cannot make a sound, it's for sure the problem from your end, and not the membrane. With dimo, it is very tricky, you can be blowing right, and the membrane got screwed and you cannot make a sound too.
Right now I like the membrane more, but I must say that it's tricky to setup to the sweet spot. Takes practice!
Yes, i got the membrane and the glue too. Will try with tape first tho and practice putting on the membrane later :D I'm not sure were to get a dizi book tho. Can you recommend were i could get it? And maybe what songs i should start learning first? Thanks :)
Kinetic1423 If you ask me, I would say, don't follow those books first. Go and blow some sound, make noise, try to make some sound and play the scale, learn how to blow properly. When you can do that, then you can go about doing some DIY melody first and LISTEN to the sound to get them in your brain. When that stage is reached, you can think about getting books. I don't know any source for these books though. You can basically find the songs and stuff online too. When you got your dizi, let me know and we can see how to help you out! Actually I just got my student in HK to buy me some good dizi and stuff too! Man, I need a proper dizi for my training!

hey~ no need to oil your dizi! It's good to play just dry. If you really love to oil it, well.. rube some mineral oil inside and then rub it dry, that's all you will want to do. Boiled Linseed oil also works, but it smells like shit afterward for a long time.. lol...
Your air and moisture is what makes it "lubed" there, no need to oil them at all actually (if you keep playing it often)
What kind of dizi are you having? or buying? Bamboo is good with linseed, but redwood is CARE-FREE!
Chiinnature it's one I got from China Bamboo a "G" from Amazon. Love it, I put a selotape membrane on until I can get to China town

Well, thanks to watching a few of your videos since this afternoon (when my Dizi arrived in the mail) I have finally been able to make a pretty good tone! I also keep loosing it, so must keep practicing, but it was exciting to finally get it going. Now please tell me do you play by ear or do you also read music? I taught myself the violin by ear and I hate to read, but I want to learn the fingering technique for this and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Sounds very identical to native american style flutes, good sound
Thanks, I think the only difference is the soundon dizi is abit more vibrating and the native flute is not like that because they don't use a membrane for the sound. Just like the western flute, you need to do the vibration yourself with the air flow. But ya, it's about the same idea I guess.

recently bought a Dizi in key D as I am a beginner.so far have sounds, have practice with membrane and tape, not yet oil dizi. I notice I am having a problem with the key hole 6, it feels far away and sometimes I find myself using my pinky finger to play that key. Q: is that normal ? the ring finger stays idle. thanks for the education.

Nice guide! Do you know that more types of instrument exist back in Ancient China? Sadly most of the instruments are lost, or the knowledge of making it are lost. Only roughly about a fraction survived.
I have the GU-Zhen (Zither), drums, a few gongs and stuff, Erhu (3) and some other things.. but not good at them all though. Dizi and Xiao is my primary mostly.. and I also know the clarinet, saxiphone, flute in western music....

Hi Mak Jo Si, I used teflon tape (plumbing tape) on my G-key dizi. What are your thoughts?
Jeffry Junus never tried that, but I doubt the teflon will stick on for a long time, they don't bond to the dizi and they will loosen up soon or later which will result in no sound. Best to just stick with normal tape

Flute Ninja Btw, this one in the vid is D key, you can buy them in any key and I have most of them on youtube with review and demo. You can buy a C or D to start but a base G is very very sexy!
Chiinnature Haha! Great, will have to check those out. I've been listening to a lot of Chinese flute music, and the distinct sound of the dizi has caught my attention. The reason why I have hesitated to get one is because of the membrane. Regardless, I'll try it out. I see now from your video, it shouldn't be difficult to do.

Flute Ninja use a piece of tape, don't use membrane, that's the best starter membrane. Normal tape is fine, don't use the thick stuff or the milky color stuff. Membrane is a bitch to work with for start up. No need to go membrane yet, and the sound is just awesome without membrane but using tape. No worry! :)

mineral oil or linseed oil works, just need to oil the inside if your dizi is not lacquor'd inside, you can see if the inside is shiny or painted, if not, then it needs some oil there. Externally? no need.

The bamboo flute in my hand in the video is about $10 only, LOL! very entry level stuff, and I always want to find a good one but I think I have to go by person to buy it to be safe, sometimes they come CRACKED and you have no guarantee when the shipment is here. Dang!

Chiinnature I think I didn't explain it clearly, I'm talking about the single mouth hole and have a huge semi oval to hold and several wind pipes sticking up.

It's true, part of what you have to BLOW the instrument and vibrate the tummy when you blow it is to exercise or vibrate the organs, sort of like chi kung too! It's a well known thing in the Chinese music world that playing these things can strengthen the organs and get you healthier too~
