In Singapore, we religiously spent significant amount of monies in our budget (about $16B in last budget) to raise an SAF which counts National Day Parade as her most important pay back to the State for the investment in our security. National security is of utmost important to small city state such as ours. However, we ought to rethink the way SAF is set-up and the people we breed in the organisation. The best fighting force in the world and our "Shifu" the IAF still insist that MAJ rank and below must retire at 40 years old, while LTC and above retires at 45. Retirement beyond 45 is at the discretion of the Armed Forces. But here we are extending all regular officers to 50 years old and introduced MDES to even allow dead woods to be around past 60 years old. An Armed Forces with no war to fight and with lots of money to spent is a recipe to disaster. I hope i am wrong and we never get to test the true mettle of our Armed Forces.
No. NDP is just an event and involves only a small part - very tiny part of the SAF each year. Childish and naive to think that’s all there is to SAF and spin up a whole essay on this.
@eatdriveplay We are dealing with cost effectiveness analysis. In essence can the SAF do the same or even better with much less financial resources? I was also hoping for a robust reply. I guess only those who know the inner work can understand.
@ first principle - you do not have the knowledge and intelligence, that people who are in the know, have… to make decisions of force planning. The SAF is not designed in a vacuum or by imagination. There are real things, events, developments, geopolitical matters that are too sensitive for public discussion. If there’s a way to do it simpler/smaller, there’s only every incentive to spend and do less, alas, the real world’s dangers cannot be overcome with hope. As one US General said - hope is not a method.
WONG GUARDS!
Why not use the military resources and become a military doctor where you can move around the Airforce, Navy, Army and other forces?
