Morna was unheard of in Portugal until Fernando Queijas sang it in Portugal in the late '50s. But it was not until 1986 that Morna gained international notoriety after it was officially launched by PolyGram Records and was sung by Gardenia Benros.
Today, Morna has patrimonial recognition throughout the world. Morna is considered a cultural classic. Gardenia Benros brought the song to the global stage in a way no one else could.
