Unfortunately we lost Laura back in 2004 at 52 years...great vocals."Spanish Eddie" and "Self Contol" were couple more. Great tunes and vocals in all...🎤🎶💓
POWERHOUSE pop vocalist! Love Laura Branigan! "Solitaire", "The Lucky One", "Self-Control", "Spanish Eddie", "Satisfaction", "Hold Me", "Moonlight On Water", "Ti Amo"......many more!
Yes, Laura Branigan had incredible singing talent. Whenever she belted it out live, you could always see that she had a lot more "gas in the tank". She has some other stuff worth checking out. You were probably thinking about Patti Smith with a different song also called "Gloria". Patti Smith is a punk / poet / rocker singer / songwriter. Patti did some pioneering work. Very much worth exploring the music catalogue of Patti Smith.
The original version (1979) is by the Italian pop singer Umberto Tozzi. And her great hit “Self Control” is also a version by the Italian singer RAF (Raffaele Riefoli). In any case, Laura performed them masterfully. Respect ❤
@@davedave8602 You got that right. And if you really wanna torture yourself, check out Celine's cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long"... she even plays air guitar! You have been warned...
This was a huge hit! She left us too soon. I loved the disco era, the music was so easy to dance to and there were so many great hits like this. You should also check out Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way." Another great disco song.
I always jump up and dance to this when I was young..... I still do, nowadays, but not with the vigor and agility of my younger years..... Have to think of my older bones and joints 😂..... Thank you for your reactions, young man..... Cheerio from Down under 🌺
A big radio hit for Laura Brannigan--and just as it was starting to cool down, they put it on the soundtrack to the blockbuster movie "Flashdance" and it was hot all over again.
God I wish we could have had Laura branigan, Taylor dayne, Celine dion, and Pat Benatar get together for an All-Star five octave Extravaganza billboard hit. That would have been something for the history books. Check out Laura's other great songs Solitaire, Self-Control, How Can I Help You Say Goodbye, I Found Someone, How am I Supposed to Live Without You, Power of Love, Sweet Hello Sad Goodbye, Spanish Eddie, Moonlight on Water, Hold Me, and Shattered Glass. Just to name a few 😃
RIP Gloria Branigan. Shawn, check out Kim Carnes songs, like BETTY DAVIS EYES, CRAZY IN THE NIGHT and DRAW OF THE CARDS - such a unique voice from the late '70s/early '80s.
While “Gloria” was considered a “Pop” song here in the U.S., it did first appear a dance song in Italy and was first considered “Italian-Pop”. 1982 was not that far from the disco era though and those who are claiming that disco was dead by the time this song was released are forgetting that all modern dance music has its roots in disco. The further we get from the disco era the harder it becomes to identify what was influenced by that era when it comes to dance music today, but the influence is definitely there and seeing how 1982 really was not that far after the disco era, there is very strong disco influence in this song. The opening of the song before she starts singing screams disco influence and the wonderfully fun bass line also has been influenced from what the disco era brought to the bass lines of dance music. To try and deny that shows how much the person denying it is trying to not be associated with disco and is letting their dislike of disco influence their opinion. Disco is the great grand daddy of modern dance music though and while most people think disco died, it did not. It evolved and the dance music you dance to in the clubs today had it roots in disco. A story about Laura Branigan I sometimes tell is way back in either 90 or 91 at what was to become the wildly popular gay circuit part, “The White Party” in Palm Springs. This was at one of the very early “White Party” events but was the year before it was finally moved to the Palm Springs convention center. Before it was held at the convention center it was held at the Racquet Club outside on their tennis courts and also at a hotel (don’t remember the name) which later became private condo’s. It was this final year at that Hotel that my Boyfriend (at that time) and I found ourselves right in front of the stage and center stage at that for Laura Branigan’s performance of “Gloria”. This was in the downstairs large convention room at the hotel. When Laura came out on stage (background music already playing), my boyfriend reached out to take her hand as she approached us. She reached down and grabbed his hand and in doing so looked us directly in the eye and we noticed that her eyeballs were moving rapidly from side to side (very rapidly). This was generally a sign of taking extasy and having it hit you very hard at that moment, so I am pretty sure she was flying on extasy during this performance. Her vocals were loud and clear though and she was belting out the song. A little way into the song the sound system tripped the circuit breaker and for a bit over a minute there was no microphone or backing track at all. Laura did not miss a beat though. Without any microphone she took it to another level with her voice and was really belting out the song with every gay man in that room backing her up. It was one of those magical moments that sometimes occur between a star and their fans, and it is something I will never forget. I am sure Laura never forgot it as well because she left that stage knowing just how well loved she was by the gay community. And what a voice she had which she really showed off for that brief moment before someone reset the circuit breaker.
Brilliant, magnetic - and totally without any autotune! Beautiful lady, and her dramatic command of the lyrics (you can hear every word, she brings together words and vocal power) make it such a riveting performance. I'm familiar with classical music too , and she has the same kind of presence as an opera singer soaring over the orchestra.
Actually, disco was over with by the time this song became a hit. But there was the lingering disco sound and of course, the disco ball. There’s no denying Laura was a great singer. She was only in her 50s when she passed away from an aneurysm.
It was great being in the late teens and early twenties back then with Laura, Ann Wilson, Linda Ronstadt. So many power voices to enjoy on the radio back then. Damn, I miss Laura. At least she left lots of tunes for us and the new generation to discover.
I think the disco balls where part of a television performance set for a larger program (maybe the show Solid Gold, which played weekly), not because this song has anything to do with disco. I particularly remember this song when it was etched in my mind in 1985 after Hurricane Gloria, when all of us sat in houses without power listening to the radio which played this song, at the request of listeners, at the top of every hour. There was also a parodied version of the song played, as well, which has a rough, scruffy voice throughout, especially at the main chorus peak line "Gloriaaaaa"
This song is such a high energy feel good song. As a kid I remember hearing this song everywhere. It's on my playlist. 1982, the beginning of the great 80s decade of fantastic songs! I wouldn't consider this disco as it was past the disco era.
RAF - " SELF CONTROL ( The Original 12 " ) STEREO this song from 1984 is the version extended 6 plus minutes Wich includes a Rap 80s style of the 1980s Laura made her version very popular too 🎸 🎹
I’ve never noticed before. Now never unheard! ❤ - and the disco ball at the start of this video nails it. I reckon a direct influence I wasn’t aware of. Jarvis is around my age and this was all over the radio in the UK as kids. If it is a reference then it is as always very clever. Brilliant 😊
LAURA BRANIGAN - " SELF CONTROL "( Official Video ) @nd " HOT NIGHT " GH🚫ST BUSTERS MOVIE 🎥 Soundtrack 2 more Amazing songs in the style of Gloria w/ great energetic musical sound 3 min and 21 seconds is HOT NIGHT 🎸
Though Laura Branigan had a handful of other hits, "Gloria" was by far her biggest. I was in my 20s when it was released and can tell you she was considered a pure pop singer and not disco, which had a much more prominent percussion style. Compare her to other female singers of the time, like Donna Summer for instance. Mirror balls hung over the dance floors of a lot of bars and clubs of the late '70s and early '80s, not just in discos.
Laura Branigan was gone much too soon. She had such a fantastic, strong voice. Among her other hits were "Solitare" & "Ti Amo": th-cam.com/video/D__PKJ-4w-0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=h0xO0cyvfFzCicOW. Rest in peace Laura (passed in 2004).
You might want to check out Laura's version of "The Power of Love," which charted on Billboard before Celine's version and is arguably the best version ever. At the least, it is far more powerful than Celine's.
This is the original: th-cam.com/video/c1P8jDSsykc/w-d-xo.html. Ignore the video, just listen to the song. Laura does it great credit, though. And she is so beautiful and sexy!
Very underrated singer with a great collection of songs
Unfortunately we lost Laura back in 2004 at 52 years...great vocals."Spanish Eddie" and "Self Contol" were couple more. Great tunes and vocals in all...🎤🎶💓
Flashdance flashback for us 80’s kids!
Check out Power Of Love the live version by Laura Branigan...Her range is Phenomenal!!!
Great choice!
This was not a disco song. This came out in 1982 and disco was pretty much gone. This was such a big hit and fun song. RIP Laura. Gone too soon.
Disco did drip into the 1980’s especially in the U.K. as the Disco Sucks stupidity didn’t reach here.m
Actually, the original song (Gloria - Uberto Tozzi) is from '79. This is a ramake from '82.
POWERHOUSE pop vocalist!
Love Laura Branigan!
"Solitaire", "The Lucky One", "Self-Control", "Spanish Eddie", "Satisfaction", "Hold Me", "Moonlight On Water", "Ti Amo"......many more!

The most underrated voice of the '80 and '90s. Do some research, she has several big hits. Four octaves of greatness and totally beautiful.
"Self Control" and "Ti Amo" were both great songs from her 2nd album.
this song was huge! R.I.P. Laura.
Her original version of “How am I supposed to live without you” will rip your heart out.
The original version (1979) is by the Italian pop singer Umberto Tozzi. And her great hit “Self Control” is also a version by the Italian singer RAF (Raffaele Riefoli). In any case, Laura performed them masterfully. Respect ❤
Her version of "The Power of Love" will blow your socks off. No one is better.
I do love Laura's cover of it, but the original singer/writer, Jennifer Rush is the best. Both so much better than Celine.
@@davedave8602 You got that right. And if you really wanna torture yourself, check out Celine's cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long"... she even plays air guitar! You have been warned...
I love this song so much. Another great song from Laura is "Self Control". Also her version of "Power Of Love" is amazing.
SELF CONTROL was a big hit & the video is wild. GLORIA was a mega hit song !!!

This throws me back to a childhood packed with great music. Can’t help but sing it LOUD still! ❤
I remember when this song played on the radio. Laura had a great voice, which made the song memorable. To me, it's more Pop music than Disco.
I always jump up and dance to this when I was young..... I still do, nowadays, but not with the vigor and agility of my younger years..... Have to think of my older bones and joints 😂..... Thank you for your reactions, young man.....

Love Laura, beautiful woman, beautiful talent taken too soon RIP. 😥
React to Solitaire. It'll blow you away.
A big radio hit for Laura Brannigan--and just as it was starting to cool down, they put it on the soundtrack to the blockbuster movie "Flashdance" and it was hot all over again.
On another reaction of this song, a commentator said Laura used to be his babysitter. For some reason, I found that to be really cool.
Laura had a one of a kind voice. She would have made it in any genre. Love her.
Self Control was her other biggest hit, and def worth checking out.
Such a great song, and great singer. Gone to young. Rip Laura.
Definitely need to hear her banger “self control”
Power of Love and Self Control (live) are 2 of her big hits you can check out

All her hits are epic. We lost her way too soon. Laura RIP.
It’s impossible not to dance when hearing this song
Self Control....💪🏽

It's actually post-disco Euro Pop. This was a big hit 🎶
Gorgeous, and one of the best voices in pop music history.

" POWER OF LOVE " By GARY WRIGHT ( NOT A COVER SONG ) ORIGINAL 70s GROOVIN' ROCK , killer Bass Lines from Dream Weaver 1975 album 🎸🎶 guitars included
Such a talented, sensual lady. Did Patti Smith cover this as well? Oh. She covered the Them version. Love this lady! Thanks.
Another great tune that filled the dance floor back in the day. Disco and New Wave had all the great dance music - nowadays...not so much
❤❤❤❤
Amazing lady taken way to soon.RIP
Original by Umberto Tozzi , !!! Great cover
You might want to check out Laura's version of "The Power of Love," which charted on Billboard before Celine's version and is arguably the best version ever. At the least, it is far more powerful than Celine's.
♥♥♥
Astute decipher of this song. And I'd say Laura's voice is a bit of Bonnie Tyler and Stevie Nicks with a good amount of warble and vibrato thrown in.
Believe it or not, this is the St Louis Blues hockey team's victory song
I liked her version better than Donna Summer...
Check out Jennifer Rush original singer and writer of "Power of love"
PATTI SMITH great version.
Completely different song… but yeah, great.
I wouldn't call this disco. Despite the end of disco music, the disco ball lasted longer.
Laura was fabulous. Apparently, I read that Canada focussed on Celine's career rather than Laura's so she never really got the exposure she deserved.
U2 also have a song Gloria…
This is the original: th-cam.com/video/c1P8jDSsykc/w-d-xo.html. Ignore the video, just listen to the song. Laura does it great credit, though. And she is so beautiful and sexy!
I saw her do this song on SNL, but her voice failed her. She came back a few months later and did a longer set as an apology.
More of a lyrical reaction would have been cool. Yeah, she can sing.
You clearly have no idea what you're talking about!
WRONG DECADE + WRONG GENRE!
This isn't Disco. It's Italo Pop.
NOT DISCO. Not even close. Not disco era. That was '83. Disco was dead and buried.
❤❤❤
