What is wild about Ovie is all of the what if's. The lockout years, the COVID shortened seasons, his birthday falling 2 days later than the NHL Draft inclusion date. If you factor that in, it is incredible that he's sniffing this record. If he had those games back, he'd have surpassed the record already. He 100% is the best goal scorer to ever play in the NHL - era adjusted or not. I can't wait to see him score 895.

@@ClonedChaos He misses scoring goals on a whim like he would on the Dynamo. I don't think he's having fun like he used too, and it feels more like a job to him now. Scoring 100 goals a year on the Dynamo without even trying and messing around a bit I'm sure will perk him back up.

He was dealing with an injury earlier in the season and was also dealing with the loss of his father. In the second half he started to pick things up and still managed to score 31 goals. He only needs 42 goals to pass, and it would not surprise me if he did it next season. At the very least, he'll score at least 21 goals the next 2 seasons. Watching the Caps offense in 2023-24 was brutal.
Ovi had Backstrom on his side for most of his career. Without Backstrom's playmaking, the offense became one of the most pathetic in the league. And his career is more or less over.
They need a first-line center really bad. Can Pierre-Luc be the next Backstrom?

I'm sure he breaks the record, I don't personally want him to because that is all he is playing for and has been for a couple of seasons now. If he were playing to really try for the cup again I'd be okay with him breaking it. However I think before long we will be discussing McDavid breaking Ovi's record, so it won't stand long I don't think.

Ovi will break the record and retire north of 900 goals. The question in the '24-'25 season is how many puck handlers are the Caps bringing in in the offseason. Losing Backstrom put a heavy burden on Ovi as the Power Play especially needs that Backstrom style yo-yo artist to lure the PK formation away from Ovi. Also, Backstrom didn't need to swing the puck to the QB before getting to Ovi, sometimes he'd sauce it to the where 1-timers might ruin a goalie's mask. All that said, Washington needs help.

Gretzky scored a lot more goals in his prime than Ovechkin, true, there was just plain more goals being scored altogether during those years but when Gretzky got his career high 92, he had 44% more than 2nd place Bossy, when Ovi got his career high 65, he was 25% ahead of 2nd place Kovalchuk. I also believe Lemieux, probably Richard and Howe were better goal scorers than him but Richard and Howe played during the original 6 and Lemieux was always hurt. 2 things that were remarkable about Ovi is that he never had a major injury that caused him to miss a good chunk of any season and unlike Gretzky, who got his last 50 g season at age 28, Ovi kept scoring 50 a year til his mid 30s.

He scored 31 last year, and there was a long enough drought that I don't think this year's gonna be *too* much slower. He probably scores around 27 or 28, leaving him with 14 or 15. As long as he doesn't have a major injury, that's pretty realistic.
Mostly, I just don't think he's going to crush the record anymore. He probably retires with between 10-20 goals over the record, depending how healthy he is.

I wonder if in team practices, if Ovechkin stands at the blue line or faceoff circle with his basket of cherries while his teammates do the real work OR is that just his playoff basket he fills.
Gretzky tried so hard to get the puck to his teammates so they could score while Ovechkin has every teammate trying to get him the puck and goals. It was disgusting watching him in the playoffs. Lazy or just tired, he hurt his team by being on the ice.
Gretzky could have played longer and scored hundreds more goals, if he was greadily chasing someones record.

Butt-hurt Canadian. It doesn't matter if he's hurting the team. The Caps are basically rebuilding. They exist right now to give him a chance to beat the record. Him beating that record will be the biggest thing that's happened in the sport in quite some time. And no one expected the Caps to win that playoff series. They limped in, and Ovechkin was clamped down because the team has no other real scoring threats. Do something.

I predicted that his shooting percentage would come closer to his mean at some point, and he'd start scoring. He did just that. If Ovi maintains a ridiculously low shooting percentage, which he has never done, he wont break the record. Id bet money that next year, he returns to his mean, and ends the season with the record broken.. or just a few goals away.

Would it also not have been harder to score because forwards crushed beers between periods and everyone had wooden sticks...not to mention the no 2 line passes, no touch icing and the like?
