the footage are old but the audio is all new the flute tone 2:28 is of one of the songs of the movie raja hindustani which relased in 1996 way after this footage was shot
Video was not used in 1960's-70's. this is shot on 8mm FILM ! I was in Kathmandu in Feb 1969 , this footage looks like it was shot early to mid seventies. Sound tracks would be added later NOT when this was shot of course.
Thanks for this great mesmerizing video on Kathmandu as always, well I feel the urban change is a global phenomenon with widespread consequences on urban form and life across different geographical regions. Over the past century, modern cities have witnessed a significant level of transformation of built environments, in which the residential neighbourhoods of recent origin have also changed. Kathmandu Valley, the cultural, economic and political centre of Nepal, has not been immune to the forces of urban change. The valley was exposed to globalisation only in 1951, following the political change; however this change also generated migration from all over the country which led to rapid growth and transformation of urban landscape in the valley, with the city cores expanding to take the emerging form of a sprawl. The transformation became evident by the 1980s, when the growing suburbs started to show a sharp contrast with their traditional counterparts in terms of the urban settings. By now, the Kathmandu Valley has been transformed into an uncontrolled metropolitan sprawl from a planned and compact settlement of the past. The contemporary urban growth of the Kathmandu Valley has not been conducive to the development of public space. Scholars argue that there is a significant loss of public space, due to the rapid and uncontrolled development of most new urban areas however it feels good to know that recently there are new innovations taking place in the contemporary Kathmandu Metropolitan City as it got its mayor in 2017 & believing it first in 20 years, there’s coming a high hopes that the city, also the federal capital, would see a complete makeover. Thanks for the video, Michael. I always wonder where you get these videos. Nepal seems timeless.I was there in November and recognize so many locations. Except for the washed out color and lack of tourists, this video could of easily been filmed a few months ago. I am saddened for what Nepal has lost.
