It's a bummer that only the instrumental version is on Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal. This one is probably my favorite of Spiral Stairs' Pavement songs.
@@splashmagnetism5923 Unfortunately it's just an instrumental version of this song in Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal. That really was a bummer...
@@asbestosman Hi there. As I said in the previous comment only the instrumental version of it is now available (it wasn't available actually before until April 8th 2022 ). I read somewhere that the band had to pay a high amount of money to Dutch Television Network so that they could get the rights for it and get a chance to remaster and release this song. And because of this I guess they just gave up the whole thing and never spoke of it again. Anyways I would send you the link of that program which they played on and made an appearance. Its the best version of it that you can find. And also in the 23rd minute it also has this song with a better video and sound quality. In the end I just hope they release this song in an upcoming bootleg or something (I feel Scott Kannberg's artistic voice is like George Harrison which they hardly gave permission to record 😂), because Farewell Horizontal (even though it was perfect) but still they should have included more unreleased tracks in it, from which they recorded during those days. The link: th-cam.com/video/JkmgOjA1Hvc/w-d-xo.html Cheers mate. And forgive me if I wrote such a long comment.
@@asbestosman Oh by the way I forgot to mention that there is actually a band called Preston School of Industry which is formed by Scott Kannberg himself and I must tell you that they sound really great. Try them out.
Oh man soooo good. They really should've recorded it though, would've been an easy favorite! I guess not recording one of their best songs is something Pavement would do though
if you read perfect sound forever, it talks about malkmus taking total control towards the end while they were recording terror twilight he refuses any input from kannberg or the others. also, pavemen was the name of kannbergs first band without malkmus. when malkmus and scott started, malkmus liked the name pavement so much he insisted they kept it for their band name.
Sounds like something halfway between a Weezer and a Blur song. You can almost tell that Blur was inspired from this sort of stuff (including the sardonic joke Stephen made about how to make a "hit-single", and not knowing who the Dutch were, that got cut off at the end there (though you can find it on another video)).
This is a very late reply, but good catch there with the comparison to Blur. Graham Coxon actually mentions being a fan of Pavement in his memoir, so it makes sense that some Blur songs have a Pavement-esque sound
Quite a few actually... From the albums and unless I'm mistaken : Two States (w/ SM), Hit The Plane Down, Kennel District, Western Homes, Date With Ikea, Passat Dream. B-sides include the great Mussle Rock and Coolin' By Sound. But this one is the best of all to me.
just a note, pavement did not play this song in their Pomona show a few days ago. (don't get your hopes up too much?) BUT their entire show was awesome. I couldn't believe I was at a pavement show in '2010', so that itself was pretty cool to be part of. YOU MUST GO SEE THEM :) !!! (although, if you're a Pavement fan, i probably don't have to say anything)
Okay so I'm seeing them at ACL in October (Tried to scoop tickets for their small venue show the night before but that didn't work out sadly) and I have an idea. Imma bring a flat pack cardboard box and mid show write "Elder" on it and "4 Sale! PSOI" on the other side and hold it up. Probably going to get nowhere fast, but it's still gonna be lit
I've seen the Jicks three times in the UK - they are top and for my money a bit tighter than Pavement live. Top bands both of them. The last Jicks album left something to be desired. Hopefully the next one will make up for it. G
@@peeeff106 holy fuck, i have 0 memory of that doc lol but as soon as I heard the Dah dah dah's I remembered like every moment of this fuckin song. Holy shit, it's so good. Straight up haven't heard this since I made that comment. Thanks for reminding me it exists lol Be so cool if it got an official release.
sorry to give the bad news but this is from Matador For Sale: The Preston School of Industry is owned by Dutch station VPRO and they wanted an obscene amount of money for it. We jointly decided with the band that it just didnt make sense. Sorry guys.
The best pavement song that never got an official release. I mean I know there’s the instrumental on the new terror twilight reissue but it’s not even close to the beauty of this version.
the mp3 is circulating, not great quality though. the first half of the song is on the pavement dvd, and it sounds great, but unfortunately the didn't include the whole tune. check the link in the info for my blog post about pavement.
fair enough. i just feel like it really interrupts the flow of everything. people seem to like it because yeah, its supposedly their tribute to the fall but i just feel like it falls short of everything its trying to do. to each their own
yes, but it wasn't improvised or anything. they worked it out (for the most part) beforehand, although from what i can tell it still had a pretty loose arrangement by the time they did this, the final version. there's an mp3 floating around with audio of the whole program in which you can hear them running through some practice takes, working out the lyrics and arrangement stuff. one snippet has malkmus taking lead with french lyrics.
oh my gosh. they seem like they don't care and it makes me care and did you see how the two lead singer guys barely slapped hands at the end providing insight ito the band's eventual demise? oh my...
very much so. the last two don't seem to get the same praise as the first two but they're excellent in their own right. wowee zowee is quite exciting on first listen actually
fran, don't listen to the other posters. All other bands you could say "rip" off other bands. It's called "influence". Every album from these guys is fresh and gutsy. Forget mainstream, top 40 crap. This band strictly put out it's own music, and never comformed. Follow it up with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. "Church on White" (just a S.Malkmus song, not w/ Jicks) is a particular one I think you'd like, and thier last album "Real Emotional Trash" was they best thing I've heard in years.
Spiral's got good tunes but his lyrics were always kinda meh... That album was Pavement's last chance to expand their audience, that was Godrich's mission and as a Pavement fan, he was really into the project. By 1999, Pavement were an 'old band', they had the respect and the devoted fans but cool kids weren't interested in them anymore. Now, to Godrich, Malkmus was Pavement and the album would be all about celebrating his songwriting abilities. I do love both singles 'Major Leagues' and 'Spit on a Stranger' but the truth is they were calibrated to be 'coffee table markets hits', slick-sounding and actually very morning radio friendly... Sadly they hardly got any airplay at the time. And Malkmus, who was 33 years old, tired of being in Pavement and didn't believe he'd ever break the coffee table market anyway quicky lost interest for Terror Twilight.
ummm... hit the plane down? really? a great song? spiral was great in his own right but citing that as an example of said greatness really doesn't help your argument. that song almost ruins crooked crain
SM’s work as the second guitarist always added so much to Spiral’s songs.
It's a bummer that only the instrumental version is on Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal. This one is probably my favorite of Spiral Stairs' Pavement songs.
It kinda guts me to think of all the people who will never hear this song because it didn't get a proper release.
The part when they shake each other's hands makes this so sad.
they're clearly doing a bit lol
Sucks this never got an official release, easily one of Spiral’s best songs.
IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING
