You're spot on Jim. Safety is the rider's responsibility. There are 4000 pound rolling death bombs everywhere and the operators are all texting and doing their Facebook while driving. Bikers, they don't see you. Open your eyes and ride defensively. Also bikers, about 99% of us ride for leisure. Few of us need a thirty thousand dollar bike to get back and forth to work. Everything we do when we leave our front porch has a risk factor associated with it. So riding a bike for leisure has risk ad that risk is way higher today because there are more cars on the road and many drivers are not paying attention. Question for us bikers is, how much risk are you willing to incur? The wife and tater tots (or grand babies) are at home and need dad to return everyday from his adventures., Bottom line is, throwing a leg over a bike is additional and avoidable risk. Measure your risk against your responsibilities.

Good stuff. When I was first learning to drive, my father always told me to 'control what you can control' and you'll put yourself in the best position to negotiate all the random stuff out on the road. When I started riding street bikes the second time (first time was in the early 90's) about 20 years ago, I read everything I could and watched every video I could related to defensive riding. One of the constants was "time and space" - meaning don't ride as close to the car in front of you as you might if you were in your car, among other things. I also approach every intersection on two lane/secondary roads with the brakes covered. And I never, ever, assume anyone see's me. I am constantly scanning for escape routes in case of a lane crossover, I always watch my mirrors when stopped at a light or stop sign (very recently saved my butt doing this), and brother - I don't have a drop of booze when I ride. Riding a motorcycle is never 100% safe (not much in life is), but you can mitigate a ton of hazards with good habits and right choices.
