A little note just in case. When screwing down the CPU retention bracket, you're supposed to get a noticable click from the included torque wrench when you reach the right torque. From what I've heard, Threadripper tend to be really picky with the tightening torque and can behave weirdly if it is slightly wrong. I didn't really see if you got to the click or not. Though if it's good, it's good. 👌
Agreed. Doesn't sound or look like he torqued it to spec. I would say that it would be a good idea to open her up again and make sure its torqued.

Mine is the opposite. Got an RTX 3060 but stuck with a Ryzen 5 3400G. Really lowers down my fps in games like Forza Horizon 5

But here is the issue: when loading every section of the map, there are peaks in CPU usage. My 3400G goes up to 100% of usage in those peaks, so a little stuttering Is caused. This stuttering is WAY more aggressive when in Guanajuato, causing fps drops up to 43 fps

You might need to undervolt it a bit to keep it cool and quiet with the noctua cooler under heavy load. 280W is a lot. I have almost the same setup, except with custom loop water cooling and slightly slower RAM. It's great for gentoo and keeping the room warm during winter. :D
I suggest you use the hard to reach mobo M.2 slots first, so when you need to upgrade your storage, it's much easier to use the DIMM.2 or the front M.2 slots, and not have to take the motherboard out of the case.
that heatsink is absolutely massive, no way you would ever need to overvolt it, infact you could probably get away with a little overclock

Hydro makes great sense for short high loads, but long high loads make it perform worse than a good big air cooler.
And it's a leak hazard, it needs maintainance, it can corrode inside and fail, the pump makes a lot of noise.
Modern air coolers are very powerful, so I doubt a good air cooler would be significantly outperformed by a water cooler

samsung silently nerfed their nvme's the nand flash is of lower quality and doesnt perform the same as the older ones. WD_black now takes the cake in the nvme market

Noticed how quickly you forgot the diagonal tightening sequence when it came time to torque the cooler down. Here I was cheering you on when you hand tightened the hold downs. A once round is fine once all is tight to ensure one wasn't missed, important in applications with many fasteners.
You sir have curred my OCD for the night. Thank you for a build. Linus hasn't done one in a long time. but after this I think you've just set a new benchmark for how these should be done!

Congrats on your upgrade! Depending on if your chassis has front intake fans, you may want to flip those fans around on the CPU cooler because it can create competing currents

That is a monster. My current Linux workstation is a Dual Xeon X5680 (6c/12t, total 12c/24t) 3.6GHz boost with 96GB of RAM. I can only imagine your new beast can do. Rad machine, enjoy it.

On the topic of gaming with the Threadripper, I am part of the team working on Veloren, an open source game similar to Minecraft/Cubeworld, and although we run our server on a high core-count CPU, our client also runs super well in parallel! If you're interested, it would be really cool to see how the game runs on your CPU, specifically for generating terrain as you fly through the world. The game is open source, and you can even enjoy your Threadripper's capability by compiling it yourself :P would love to see this!

Great rig dude, i'm glad you could get a well deserved upgrade. Last month i also got an upgrade from my 8 year old pc, went from a I5-3340 to a Ryzen 5 5600x. The difference is truly mind-boggling. Love the channel. Keep it up!
Ryzen be the best. I wish I could of gotten a AMD GPU, but I copped my 3070 at non scappled price.
But AMD GPU's are better in my experience with me running arch. (Btw)

I can relate about the SSD size. I also recently upgraded my system and got a WD Black SN 850 500 GB SSD and it blew my mind seeing how small it was. Before the upgrade, I was on a WD Green 1 TB 5400 RPM HDD (not sure about the model) so the jump from HDD which is about the size of a wallet to SSD which like you said was about the size of a gum with even 500 GB storage was quite astonishing.
congratulations on that beast of a CPU, I'm just wondering why you put the fans pointing at the opposite direction though? if you have a case with front intake fans that's going to create a hot spot area where the airflow collide with each other

If you ever have to change your CPU/cooler, I can highly recommend the Thermal Grizzly graphite pad in Threadripper size. It's like a thin microfiber sheet that's reusable. I get it because I was tired of cleaning off paste and it really works well.

@@AkshayKumar-kz6zh I don't mind it on a regular sized CPU, but with Threadripper it's ridiculous. And you always worry if you used enough. This takes the guesswork out of it and it's reusable! I changed the CPU in my water cooled rig without draining (soft tube) and without cleaning paste. Totally make it easier for myself 😅

I’m running the old 1950 Threadripper and Gentoo and it works great. I also use an Noctua Air cooler and never had any overheating problems. Although I don’t really need to update I’m looking forward to see what the next release of Threadripper will bring, it is a great platform.

"Only" have a 3960x here, but with a couple of Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus NVMEs that have the newer Phison controller in. The slightly higher boost clock of the 24 core is nice for when I occasionally do play games on it, the overkill liquid cooler helps keep the clock speeds up.
It's kind of spoiled me a bit. I'll run big unzip operations on more normal gaming-type computers and look at the 200MB/sec speed, my first reaction is "pathetic". Give me my 5GB/sec unzips and greater-than-realtime software 4K video transcode operations. They're lovely.
I do worry that you've not torqued that CPU in tightly enough. The key you get with it does give a click that's best described as hair-raising when you're not used to it.

You should sell your Threadripper system and get $2,500-$3,000 for CPU, RAM, and motherboard alone--so you can put it towards a system with much better performance, especially for video encoding and code compilation, where AVX-512 instructions really shine at accelerating compared to just AVX or AVX2.
You could have gone the dual Intel Xeon ES (Ice Lake-SP) processor with SuperMicro X12 (C621A chipset) mainboard route, giving you: 2 sockets, 64 cores, 128 threads, with AVX-512, 8-16 DDR4 memory channels, 3 11.2 GB/sec bi-directional UPI links for chipset and cross-CPU communication, with 256 GiB (16X16 GiB) of DDR4-2133 (PC4-17000R) ECC RDIMMs, for a mere $3,670 before shipping, handling, and taxes--$1,200 for CPUs, $800 for mainboard, $600 for RAM, $400 for a quality 800 W 80 Plus Platinum PSU and Lian-Li chassis. @@technicalfool Dude, it IS A WORKSTATION. It is literally a workstation board, and do you know anything about acoustics? The only noise you would hear are the fans on the CPUs, which I recommended Noctua fans for, they have a maximum dB level of 36 dB. That's between whisper quiet and background noise level of a library. What are you smoking?
@@NUCLEARARMAMENT I'm not going to fork-lift my entire system yet. I'm not going to buy anything from ebay. I'm not going to be going for 2133mhz memory, ECC or not. I already have a 1600W Titanium PSU. I already have RAID boxes with WD Red Pro drives.
I wouldn't buy a 64 core CPU. I don't need that many cores. I want and already have tons of IO and lanes, with respectable per-core performance, and I've had that since shortly before COVID hit.
The difference between me and you is, I know my use-case. As and when my current system stops being useful for what I do, I will consider the options then, and not before then.
No man needs more computing power than what T420 has to offer.

I use this same cooler on my AMD Ryzen 5 3400G
A CPU that outputs a lot less heat, and overclocked and under-volted, I'm at around 26°C at idle and around 55 at 100% load, and at around 63°C in full torture tests

Always nice to see a weeb build a nice computer. Going to have to build mine in 6 months along with picking up a new Android based phone. Here's to hoping for a hail Mary and the S22 + or Ultra has micro SD card support. My 3570k has supported me nearly 10 years.
@@AcridWhistle get a Pixel 6 Pro and flash Calyx/Graphene. Samsung is officially dead, they got rid of every single unique feature, plus their stock apps are filled with trackers.
I love seeing these videos, anything linux wise inspired me to try it, and I fucked off windows long time. Next upgrade, I'm committing to ryzen 9 5900x, 32gb or 64gb ram, and 3070, for 2 rsns:

2: workstation for my plans.

if you're gonna be a linux user, stick to Radeon GPUs, Nvidia cards are suited if you run a Win 10 VM and you assign that GPU to it. If you still want an Nvidia card, at least make sure to buy a cheap Radeon gpu for your main linux OS. Me personally, i just prefer to have 2 separate systems altogether.

The noctua model you’re thinking of that has two fans is the NH-D15. I think the d means dual fans and the u means uni fan

I think this build will be time tested in a good way. You can just upgrade the GPU whenever you need to and with descent VM setup this build is a wetdream for general Linux enthusiasts
Agreed. Ripping out a motherboard/CPU is always harder than swapping a GPU. Plus you might be able to outlive the worst of rhe GPU shortage lol

Hey, congrats with the new rig! But why did you put your thermal paste in a such weird way? I suppose - and I've actually done this myself - that thin layer of the thermal paste should cover the whole surface of the processor's top. I have a "conventional" Ryzen 7 pro 3700, I've just dropped a couple of dots of the thermal paste upon the processor and then carefully spread it with my finger put into a plastic bag (polyethylene gloves which became a normal thing in the covid era would also go). Also, there are small spades particularly designed for spreading the thermal paste upon the processor, but I find it more convenient to use just a finger.
The cooler already spreads the thermal paste for you

Slick rig! Pro tip: Put the thick rubber pads on your 2nd Noctua CPU fan. The slim ones will cause turbulence and an irritating whining noise at higher RPM.

Fun fact: if you take apart the SSD drive you showcased, you will notice it actually only takes up half of the casing (so it's roughly double the size of nvme)

SSDs actually last longer when they're hot, ideally the flash will sit in the 60 to 70 range. The memory controller doesn't enjoy heat, however, and may throttle. So if you have a heat shield for nvme, it's better to cut away the part that contacts the flash chips.
This had been dis-proven turns out heat is bad in general and electronics like to be cool. Some of that planned obsolesce seeping in.
This is mostly right. The vram modules like to run hot and have a thermal junction max temp of 110C (best to run under 90C). It’s the controller that you really don’t want to get hot.
This is the case for gpu vram modules and I believe that the ones on ssd are very similar if not identical
Not quite. There's two components that are temperature sensitive, the actual memory chips and the ssd controller. The memory chips are perfectly happy ~25-55C. The ssd controller is likely less sensitive. Where lower temps are an issue is when you get to subambient. SSDs don't generate that much heat so it's very easy for condensation and shorting to become a problem.
