- Welcome to my thirteenth Pokemon Challenge! Today, I seek to prove something rather than answer a question: We *WILL* beat Pokemon SoulSilver with ONLY a Chikorita, proving that Chikorita is a valid starter!

This whole run can be summarized with “And it was yet another one shot with Body Slam” and I think that’s hilarious

I've always loved Chikorita. She was my partner in Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue team named Rhonda. I brought Rhonda back for and LP of the same game, a stream of DX and I'm now playing her in a Mystery Dungeon themed D&D campaign. I thought, more needs to know how amazing Chikorita really is and decided to see if anyone has done a solo run. You did not disappoint. ^-^
That's such a cute story! I also love the PMD games, and I've wanted to make a video about them, but I've been unsure about how I'd approach it, lol. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I was pleasantly surprised at how well Chikorita performed, definitely a very fond experience overall!

Johto will forever be the most difficult region to choose a starter from for me. All 3 starters are great and I honestly have to plot out my team before picking them to decide which one to choose.
The Johto games are by far the most fun for me, and a large part of that is because you really can't go wrong with the starter you pick. They're all absolutely amazing!

The Honest Pokemon Trainer may have gotten his Chikorita to go super saiyan, but you have truly mastered Chikorita's Ultra Instinct. Congrats.
I was DETERMINED to beat Red with Chikorita! I'm so glad that I was able to do so! Next week I have another challenge in HGSS that I think you'll also enjoy!

Great vid! Never thought Jolly would be the nature of choice but given the moves you ended up using, it makes perfect sense.
I had to do some serious number crunching before the run started! The reason I went with Jolly was to ensure that Pikachu couldn't outspeed me so that I could use at least 1 Double Team before it hit me! Without Jolly and Speed EV Training, it is impossible without something like Quick Claw!
Chiquorita will always be my go too Starter for Gen 2.. plus it has the added benefit of utilising all 3 legendary dogs without having to swop out my starter

This is so stupid. Of course you can win any Pokemon game with anything when you overlevel the shit out of it and especially abuse Double Team
Not every Pokémon has access to Double Team and not every Pokémon can win even if they're Level 100! The point of my Solo Runs is to show if a Pokémon can beat the game by itself! I proved in this video that Chikorita can handle whatever HGSS throws at it! I'm sorry this video wasn't what you were looking for!
@@ShroYTBS. Almost every Pokemon available in HGSS can get Double Team via TM. And yeah most Pokemons can win any in-game battle at level 100 with EV training, perfect natures, and evasion abuse.

Chicorita is my #1 fav starter of gen2 but.. I do like Bayleaf more 🙇🏼 (Not a fan of Meganium though), then Totodile second…. I pass on Cinaquil though…. 😅
They're all equally good in my opinion!

if you're using double team in your run it just feels like cheating, its a cop out that lets terrible Pokémon cheese the game.
I understand why you feel that way, but I personally, I don't think it is "cheese". It's not fair, but it's intentional game design from Game Freak. Double Team is very difficult to obtain in the game (you have to play Voltorb Flip for it which is actual mental torture) and not all Pokémon can learn Double Team (which isn't relevant to this video, but it is to others I've made).
My goal with Solo Runs isn't to be a challenge the same way that Nuzlockes are: my goal is to simply see if an individual Pokémon can beat the game all by itself! Surprisingly, some Pokémon simply can't beat the game all by themselves, even if they're Level 100 and EV trained!

Nice videos you make! You seem to be very equipped with calculating things. Do you think you'll ever do any runs that don't involve the starters?
Yup! In fact, I already have! I did a FireRed run with only Caterpie! Currently, everyone is voting for the starters in my Discord, so we're getting those out of the way before moving further on through the other Pokemon!

So basically to beat hgss with the chikorita line you have to level it 10, 20, 30 levels above the opponents lol
If you want to have EVs, yeah. I didn't alter my IVs or anything, but if you want to EV train your starter without trading or cheating, you'll naturally end up with all that EXP without even trying to over-level. And to top it all off, it doesn't matter what level you are when you get to Blue and Red since they'll either one-shot or two-shot you.
@@ShroYT gotcha, also can you explain why jolly is best nature for chikorita?
@@maxl5339 Chikorita has equal Sp. Atk and Atk stats, but more importantly, Chikorita's best moves are Physical. On top of Chikorita's best moves being physical, Chikorita also has access to Swords Dance, allowing Chikorita's Atk stat to go INSANE!
Jolly as a nature improves Chikorita's Atk stat while lowering Sp. Atk. Since I didn't plan on using any Sp. Atk moves at all, the lowered Sp. Atk means nothing!
Edit: I was very tired when I wrote this and mixed up some information. Jolly does not improve Chikorita's Atk stat, it improves Speed. I chose Jolly for the run because I needed Chikorita to outspeed Pikachu and other potential run enders like Arcanine and Charizard.

Rock Climb (Normal, 20% confuse) / Physical *From Oak, Needed for Red

What emulator do you use bro?
There are many great emulators for DS games, like DeSmuME and MelonDS! Both of them are great!
Overlevelled + double team?
Kinda hard to do a solo run without being overlevelled, yeah! And as far as Double Team goes, my goal is to show whether or not a Pokemon can beat a game with the tools it is given. If a Pokemon can learn Double Team, then it's fair game for my purposes! I have made plenty of videos of Pokemon that don't have access to Double Team with varying success, I suggest you check out one of those if you dislike the Double Team strat!

Chikorita winning one of the easiest games in the series while overleveled as fuck the entire run, perfect Nature and EV trained up and setting up every battle does not make it not the worst starter to ever exist, which it continues to be
I respectfully disagree! The point of my Solo Run is to prove that if you want Chikorita to be the only Pokémon you use for an entire run, you can beat the entire game without cheating! Chikorita, and all of the Johto starters for that matter, can solo HGSS by themselves. There's no reason to compare them and say which is better or worse when they can all do the exact same job.
Also, it's a solo run. It's impossible to not be overleveled. This is especially true in HGSS since the level curve is notoriously different from most Pokémon games to account for two regions.
@@ShroYTIt's disingenuous. Saying that a starter isnt bad because if you overlevel the shit out of it, EV train it completely when very few if any NPC trainers have EV trained mons, then abuse Double Team, it can win against the Champion, is absurd. Out of every starter between all the games in the main series, Chikorita has by far the worst matchups in its own game, even disregarding the fact that its stat distribution is completely defensive. Pure grass typing is pretty bad on its own, but pure grass without leech seed or very many good grass moves by levelup makes it terrible. It is the worst
@@joedorben3504 Chikorita isn't bad! It can complete it's own game and those are the criteria I'm judging it on! You're judging it by a competitive, multiplayer point of view, which is completely pointless in the context of this video!

Its the worst starter in all pokemon because Johto...Grasa types are useless and a waste of a team slot as whole being weak to most the game and super effective against nothing its not also weak too. Bar chucks poliwrath

@@ShroYT You should try a Chikorita(and evolutions) run in Gen 2. It has access to curse in Gen 2, and it's hilariously effective.

Once the 4 move slots are full from level up moves thats it. HMs for game progression only. No TMs at all.
On my first play through of Ruby that is exactly what I did unknowingly, but it would be interesting to do a run where only tms and hms
