    Nick... If it were me, I would probably add the Perlite and the charcoal down closer to the bottom of the pot because all that Perlite sitting on top, is an eyesore and makes a bit of a mess down the road! Plus... You want your aeration down by the bottom/ends of the roots.

    Love your videos, and great info on the soil. I've had luck propagating leaf and node cuttings directly in soil, but found that the leaves died before they could root, until I put a cloche over them. Now I propagate them in a little Ikea greenhouse and that works really well. A large clear plastic container would work as a greenhouse too...I used that when I couldn't fit all my cuttings under the cloche. I also put the whole mother plant in the greenhouse with the trailing vines coiled up when we went on holidays for 2 weeks because I was scared it would dry out, and it never looked better, the leaves were so shiny from the humidity. :-)

    I love your videos. Just a thought, does charcoal absorb fertilizers in planted pots? I know for planted aquariums we need to turn off the filters with activated charcoal for a bit while the plants absorb the liquid fertilizers.
    I know in planted pots activated charcoal helps wick out excess moister and rid of smells though. I'm still learning to be a plant dad.

    Hi, I love your videos! Can you possibly address compacted soil in a future video? My adonsonii seems to get that way no matter what I do. Is there a safe way to fix this or avoid it ? Thank you a ton!!!

    • @M0NST3RBUNN3H
      @M0NST3RBUNN3H 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure if you ever got it fixed, but I fix compacted soil by adding 1 or two drops of dish liquid into a bucket and soaking my plant in it! It helps the water absorb rather then bounce off the plant. I got this suggestion from someone in a plant group and I've used it now on multiple plants with great success!

    what does activated charcoal do?

    • @DarrenPauli
      @DarrenPauli 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It creates spacing in the soil to assist roots. Also helps with draining, just like perlite. Charcoal also has some ability to absorb impurities but it's mainly about additional drainage and spacing.

    Should I choose water propagating over soil propagating with these? I just got one that was super leggy so I cut all the leaves off at the node like you’re supposed to. I put 2 of them in water and the rest in the soil with the fuller part of the rooted plant just to see what would work but not I’m paranoid and I check on it every 10 minutes to make sure it’s not dead 😂😂

  • @saralynnroze01

    Hi Nick, very nice video!
    Quick Question: What is the difference between the monstera adansonii and the monstera obliqua?

    • @NickPileggiPlants
      @NickPileggiPlants  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! M. obliqua is a much rarer collector species that is not in cultivation. Its leaves are taken up almost completely by fenestrations (holes) and are much more misshapen. It’s something you would only see at a botanical garden or from very avid aroid collectors. M. adansonii on the other hand is quite common in cultivation and is what you would find at a garden center

  • @phaness_876
    @phaness_876 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got a monstera adansonii cutting in the mail today. It came in an envelope and inside that the cutting was in a small zip lock bag with a wet paper towel and no air circulation... parts of the leaf rotted and idk if it’s gonna survive. 😭
    I cut the rotten parts off and dunked the cutting in hydrogen peroxide water mix. Now the node is just sitting in water because it’s root system isn’t really developed. The seller said it was a rooted cutting but it just has a tiny nub. I feel ripped off. I just hope it survives and grows into a nice healthy plant.

  • @pnh165
    @pnh165 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Does the point you cut from the mother plant continue growing? I'm afraid to propagate from cuttings for fear my mother plant wont grow from the same point.

  • @amandajacques673
    @amandajacques673 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a cutting that has been propegating for almost 4 weeks. It has popped out a tiny root but it's very thin and only about an 1/8th of an inch long. The bottom 3 leaves have all started to yellow and die but a new leaf at the to has also appeared. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I don't want it to continue to die and don't know why the roots aren't more developed by now.

  • @jackwilliams3636

    Hi there!
    This may just get skipped over but I was wondering if the node needed to have ariel roots growing for it in order to propagate successfully? I purchased one online and it came pretty beat up - have taken several cuttings that had ariel roots growing from the node but a lot of the others were dried up so I've left them alone for now

  • @kristeenluvsya

    Heeelp I bought 3 cuttings online and added it to water immediately (as instructed to do so by the seller) and checked it (4 days later) and the roots that were on it are rotting! The roots are approximately 1 inch or shorter. What should I do?

    I bought a beautiful full 6 inch basket of narrow leaf adansonii. My ac went out the summer after I bought it (I live in Houston, Texas) and the plant started to decline. Still being a newbie my first instinct was to repot it. I used a pot that I thought was only slightly bigger (10 inch I believe). It had been doing well, I thought I had the watering down until recently leaves started to turn yellow in the middle and eventually falling off. Watering problem I suppose. The plant is still growing new leaves on the ends of the vines but im thinking of repotting into a much smaller pot and using a moss pole. My question is, will it regrow leaves in the bare stems if I add the pole? Or is better to chop it up and propagate? I like the long vines.
    Help is much appreciated!

    Hi! Do you think it’d be ok if I make cuttings and try to water propagate now (Fall 2019), or should I wait till next growing season? The leaves are getting smaller as the vines get longer (and spacing between leaves are getting further). Thanks in advance!

    I did this with mine and even though the propagation went very well, the vine that I have cut to propagate isn't producing any more leaf and stopped growing. Is it normal? What should I do? I started this plant with only one leaf (one vine) so the fact that its not growing anymore is problematic as I now only have that vine and the one I propagated from it!
