  • In this new series, I will be researching the family trees of fellow youtubers and showing the process as I go along. This series will be a tutorial on how to do genealogy research while also highlighting the interesting ancestral history of your favorite youtubers. This second season will feature Mr. Beat, whose channel focuses on history, politics, geography, and other topics related to social studies. In the first few episodes of this season, I will be building Mr. Beat's family tree using only DNA.
    This second episode will focus on analyzing What Are The Odds (WATO) results, research focus to connect clusters, and identifying ancestors through connecting clusters.

    My dad got me interested in genealogy. As an American, it confounds me how many are not interested. You find so many interesting people and stories that you never knew that you were connected to. I have found a few scoundrels from England (1 that I’m descended from) and some interesting professions. I love history.

    Those WATO trees are invaluable! What an amazing tool to use when you can match enough people to a common ancestor. We admit, we ended up diving into the Directories tab to find the right link based off of the Liebst family, but finding that cousin with an X match proved invaluable in finding the link to the Rausches. An amazing search tool, especially when you deal with trees in areas with much higher populations than exurban Kansas!

      Did end up watching the livestream with Mr. Beat's DNA results afterward, and laughed when he mentioned the Rausch name right off the bat. But glad to have the experience using these genetic genealogy tools without prior knowledge. Amazing series so far!

    Very cool! Really enjoying this series. Not having luck with my mums results so have ordered 5 DNA kits for myself and family members to try spread the search and will be using similar techniques. I'm going to be making TH-cam DNA videos on them - will send you the link for a reaction vid when it happens because I think it is going to be really cool. 😇😇

    And a problem re photos/images in the Ancestry gallery -
    When you are building private, unsearchable trees for quick and dirties, anything in the gallery remains searchable! I have had this happen a number of times where someone comments on the original, and it comes through to me. And I have tested it - others can at least id the creator of the private, unsearchable tree.
    Just something to keep in mind.

      When you tested this, was it on a private tree where the "Also prevent your tree from being found in searches." option was selected? I have found a lot of people are unaware that private trees are still searchable unless you go into the settings, under the privacy tab, select private tree, and then confirm the prevention of being found in searches.

    • @LindaSchreiber
      @LindaSchreiber 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. "Also unsearchable". I've been doing quick and dirty trees for some years now. Found biofather, and also half-sis's. It's now a hobby with DNA matches ;)
      All seems to be safely unsearchable except images in the gallery.
      The glitch seems to be not that images in the down-and-dirty are searchable but if anyone comments on the original image or, as far as I have seen, that image on any tree that borrowed it, you get emailed the comment. And apparently the commenter can see at least the tree owner link, to send a message. I've gotten a few of those....
      I generally don't care. Just say I'm researching. But in a truly sensitive quick-and-dirty, images might be a problem.
      I try to clear the gallery on any like that.
      Just an FYI.

    Great to be able to see your process. It helps sooth my imposter syndrome 😂

    • @GeneaVlogger
      @GeneaVlogger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think most of us go through imposter syndrome, but that all goes out the window every time I hear from one of the unknown parentage cases I've helped telling me how I changed their lives, or the Detectives telling me how amazing it is that we went from no information on a case to now having the identity of unknown remains or a violent perpetrator in custody.

    I have no issue with people adding my photos to their trees with myself as the original person that shared the photo. I do mind if people save my photo to their computer and then add it as if they’re the original sharer. Grrrr. But I do want to have the photos up so other people who are working on the same line will have access to the photo so I grin and bear it.
