Thank you, Marlon! I am a retired California state peace officer. Bass Reeves has been a longtime hero of mine. Often, when I had a chance to speak with young black offenders I would talk to them of Bass. Most had never heard of him. Some were very impressed to hear of his exploits. America does not celebrate its black heroes much, least of all this great lawman. He deserves better. Your short film was well done and takes the first steps to bring awareness to a man that was a true hero! Many thanks, sir!

What people should understand is black history is American History and should be aware of not just the slavery era but the creative genius that shaped America, this should be a just cause included in ALL our Museum. I can't wait to see how they represent African and American history in the new Black history museum in Washington D.C. and if not to the utmost standard of black accomplishments we must forge it in.

YUP. It's a crying shame and the youth of today need real life heroes they can admire and relate to, even if it is just the color of skin. The generations have suffered and more needs to be done to encourage, uplift and bring a sense of pride to the American Black Consciousness!

I'm a lifelong resident of Fort Smith, and the story of Bass Reeves is well known. He has a statue downtown (part of the US Marshal's Museum project,) and he's buried in one of the older parts of Oak Cemetery along with several other Deputy Marshals and their families. His story is far from suppressed here.

I am a big fan of BASS REEVES! I read the juvenile book Gary Paulsen wrote about him, and began reading it to my 10 year old son. He has since read the book 3 times. I cannot wait for the movie to come out, if it hasn't already. I was planning to "commission" and challenge a HS class that I have started mentoring to write a screenplay based on his story! I ached to think that this man wasn't part of our greater American Awareness, our common consciousness, like so many outlaws from this time period were. I ached to think of him still unrecognized worse yet, in an unmarked grave! Now I know that there was a statue erected in recent time in Fort Smith, AR honoring him.. I pledge to take my kids there to see it. I am so excited that there may be a movie out about him! I will buy it when I find it.

I live about 50 miles from the U.S. Marshall's museum in Ft.Smith, Arkansas. While visiting the museum, I found myself standing directly in front of the Bass Reeves display. Bass Reeves, in my opinion the most bad ass lawman who ever lived, brought in over 3,000 outlaws from Indian Territory to stand before Judge Issac Parker, The Hanging Judge. Right next to the horse saddle of infamous female outlaw Bell Starr, who out of respect turned herself in to Reeves, there hung his badge, spurs, long coat/duster, gun & holster, and his black wide brimmed cowboy hat. I love hats. I wear a hat all the time. Bass Reeves hat is the most awesome hat I've ever seen. Now, I'm normally a very honest law abiding citizen, but I got this irresistible urge to grab Reeves hat and run out to my car with it. Only a thin rope around the display stood between me, and Bass Reeves awesome hat. I fought the urge for several minutes and finally settled for sniffing Belle Starr's saddle.

      Marlon Ladd
I've thoroughly enjoyed what you've accomplished on film so far sir. Another film about Bass Reeves would be terrific. His life story would be fantastic! Tell you the truth, I'd never heard of Bass Reeves and his Native sidekick until I visited the Marshall's Museum. Now, I've read everything I can find on the man. He's quickly become one of my all time hero's. IMHO, Reeves is a true American hero who possessed more integrity, intelligence, and guts than most ten men put together. It's a low down dirty rotten shame Hollywood hasn't made a big budget movie about the greatest Lawman that ever lived.

This was amazing to watch, well done! I have lived here in fort smith since the late 90's and the first time I even heard of this amazing lawman, was a few years ago when the town finally put up a statue up of this great man. My husband and I were watching the story of the statue being put up of Mr. Reeves and we thought how great that was, and they said how there was going to be this "big o'l celebration", to commemorate Mr. Reeves on this particular day. However Roland our unfortunate dismay we drive to the so called celebration and it was so sad! I'm serious, they had the local news out there and some ppl talking and taking pictures, but it was nothing that they said it was going to be too celebrate this amazing man, and we both said " yep, had he been white, this would have been hell of a celebration".... ( We didn't get out of the car, just drive by). So it was a pleasure to have watched this short film, I've learned more here about Mr. Reeves than I have living here for the last 20 years. Thank you, and I have to say how sexy you are my friend. :-) I would support a future film as well. Good luck!

Wow! I guess I hadn't checked my comments here in awhile. Your responses are great!! It will fuel me to continue making films for the world to see that will hopefully entertain and inspire. Thanks so much for the positive comments.
The feature I did on Bass Reeves was over 12 years ago and was a fun ride. Because of the lack of technology back then and my directing capabilities, I would say this one is easily more representational of how I wanted to portray Bass Reeves. If you still want to see that one, google the DVD multi-pack titled, Band of Brothaz. I just saw one the other day on ebay.
Galyn Hembree I would love to do an edited version of the film for younger audiences. If you can make that happen, let me know and I'll work some magic.

Yes.... It's a great idea! To make a feature film... About the Oklahoma territory in the late 1800's, where the most vile men in the world lived at the time... With people running them down, sherrifs, facing prison, stealing, killing, whores, saloons, death, murder... Without...ANY FUCKING OBSCENITIES. well dadgummit there bass, ya sure fooled me this time again, I'll just go ahead n throw my hands in the air, and gosh darn it I killed these nice native Americans, but it was just a little tomfoolery, I also acquisitioned a horse that belonged to an African American man, but, I will pay for my dues, oh shingles its you..got.. I don't care who does the film, but Wesley Snipes should be starring in the role of Bass Reeves!

Way better than the Lone ranger. No, he is his own, and deserves a feature film or TV series. Much respect.

This is excellent! I would like to see more. I believe you could update it and drum up some support for a major release, or use the film as is to garner some major league support from the big studios to get a wide release with major funding, effects, editing, etc.

    Mr. Marlon
That was riveting and I loved it. I'd love to see more and I also subscribed. I shared it with my entire family who are big Western fans. I will let them know to give a like thumbs up and leave a comment. Good things brother

@@marlonladd Good Sunday morning thank you for your time to respond. Also big ups and great acting by all who were working with you! I enjoyed it and everyone who was in it. Bravo and hopefully you can make it an Encore with full movie or series. I say contact Oprah Winfrey production because based on his life and history this could most definitely be a season of a series production. Whatever you do or whomever you contact for consideration just send them your shorts... Your shorts speak for itself! Stellar at that! Ijs! Take care Marlon and stay blessed.

I so enjoy movies on true history, straight from the actual records without left or right bias. Tell the history as told and let the audience decide.

Thank you guys so much for the comments!! You keep me going. The second installment of this called Bass Reeves will be up August 31st 2017, so stay tuned! I will also be running a gofundme and/or kickstarter type campaign to do a feature. Love you guys!

Hey, Tara. Glad you liked the film! I could edit you a version and mute those curse words out depending on when you'd like to show the film. I would love for you to show this to your class. I made this film to help educate and get the word out about Bass Reeves, so let me know.
