    A little trick in getting your snake gourd straight is by tying a small stone when the gourd is young, so they grow perfect straight :)

    They are so lovely. I ordered some seeds and can't wait to get them. I hope to grow some this season. I love all kinds of gourds but mostly grow them as ornamentals.

    I just received my snake gourd seeds today and I'm anxious to plant them.
    Question: do these do well in hot weather? I am in zone 9 in South Louisiana and our summers are approximately 80 to 99°F.
    Thanks much for making this video. :) I love your channel, by the way.

    My bottle gourds and snake gourds are growing well, I think. The snake gourd plants were growing well and I got about 8-10 snake gourds but now the flowering seems to have slowed down. There are very few flowers. I use Espoma organic fertilizer about once a month and organic bone meal. What can I do to increase flowering in snake gourds.
    The bottle gourds bloom at night so I have not been able to manually pollinate it so the flowers do not get fertilized I think and many of them just drop off the plant.
    I have also planted red pumpkins(kaddu) and seem to be having the same issues. I have harvested 2 pumpkins but now there are very few flowers. I have 5 plants and some days there are only 1-2 male flowers and no female flowers seem to be developing. Last year I was very successful with the red pumpkins without any fertilizing at all. This year couple of times, the tiny female flowers have turned yellow and fallen off. Thanks for your help.

    Any tips on germination. 10+ days and no seedling.. The seeds seem to be inside a hard shell. Should we break the shell before sowing?

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Badri Narayanan I just sow the snake gourd seeds directly, never had to scar them. If the seeds are not germinating, try buying from a different source, maybe the seeds are no longer viable.

    Thank you for your video. I got a few ideas for my trellis from your video. Is it OK to plant bottle gourds and snake gourds in the same vegetable patch and let them grow on the same trellis? I have read that plants belonging to family Cucurbitaceae like the gourds and the white and red pumpkins are notorious for cross pollination. This is the first time growing snake gourd and bottle gourd.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      200nki Glad that you liked the videos and got some trellis ideas. Yes I intermix gourds all the time and never had any issues with pollination. This patch you see int he video had cucumbers, bottle gourd and snake gourd, all in the same area!

    • @200nki
      @200nki 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      California Gardening Thank you for your prompt response. What are the dimensions of your trellis - I mean the footprint of your patch? I have 7 snake gourd plants and 4 bottle gourd plants. How big a space do I need for these plants? I am thinking of building a trellis 8 ft long by 4 ft wide and 6 ft tall. Is that good enough for so many plants without overcrowding? Thanks.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      200nki This is a 8 feet by 4 feet patch. I used PVC pipes and this netting: amzn.to/1efrdKW

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      200nki And with that trellis size yes I would grow 4 bottle gourd and 4 snake gourds. The bottle gourds are very prolific though and will take over the snake gourds. So you can also go with 3 BG and 5 SG
