If you wouldn't leave your children, DONT LEAVE YOUR PETS. If you're watching this and you have pets, think and plan now about how you will get them all out if a disaster happens. Be prepared.
Sometimes people are told "leave them or don't get on this rescue boat" because of lack of room. Texas is actually making a BIG effort to save these animals. I"m very touched by this.
It's about doing the best you can in dire circumstances. Humans come first.

I'd take my pets no matter what. My dog is family and where I go she goes. I'm in California and it's possible we could have a large earthquake. I'd be that person rescuing all the animals.

Thomas Buxbaum easy to talk when you don't have to make the choice of save your son or daughter and leave your pet behind, but since you a classic stupid and arrogant american I don't think you have any idea how bad the hurricane was, and how desperate the situation is, have some respect for the people who lost their pets, they loved them just as much as you do.

You mention having respect for those who have lost their pets because they loved them, which I'm sure they did. But just before that you say the commentor is a "classic stupid and arrogant American" there's no respect in that statement. All this person was saying is their pets are family and the pets go too, same at my house. Nothing wrong with that. Everyone is doing the best they can under terrible circumstances.
I would never put my family and pets in danger they had a week to go somewhere drive north and get a hotel.

Thank God we learned after Katrina that pets are as valuable as people. That said, all animals impacted by natural disasters are valuable far beyond their monetary value. All wild animals and livestock are worthy of being saved.
I would never leave my 11yr old PitBull and 25 yr old African Grey, we've been through too much together.

I can't imagine leaving my cat behind me and hope for the best her. This is unbelievable. My cat like my family member like a sibling for me. It's so heartbroken. I hope they will be all okay pretty soon.
I would grab my dog no matter how and try to save us both or escaping together. I would grab him at his neck and wouldn`t let go! I have anxiety even jost from the thought ...... Never get an animal if you don`t want to take care until the end.

One of our shelters in Birmingham went down and brought 42 dogs back yesterday. ❤❤ If anyone close sees this comment and have been wanting to adopt .. please go to the Greater Birmingham Shelter.
Animals are families, too.
I could never leave my pets behind. They would physically have to pry me from them. When people have lost everything having a beloved pet can take some of that pain away. All lives are precious and deserve rescue. If there is ever a big storm like that coming my way, I'm packing up and going further inland. I'd be able to keep my furry family together even if we have to live out of the car temporarily. I don't know what farmers would do. How do you prepare for something like that if you have horses, cows and chickens? So many people including myself are not prepared for natural disasters. I always think about it but have never put a formal plan into place. On my agenda for the long weekend. Saying prayers for everyone in TX.
In many cases that beloved pet is all they have left.
My heart breaks to see this. I wouldnt save one pet and leave the others behind. I would save all of mine. I would even save my 8 chickens lol. I have 2 dogs, 1 cat, 8 chickens, 7 hermit crabs and fish lol. Best believe I would do my best to save each and every one of them.

Seeing the doggies in the ice chest brought me to tears they look so bewildered and scared.
If anything great came from Katrina it was noted how many people were forced to leave pets, as they were not permitted in the places that refuge people, and many rules were changed. It is great that now so many of the "people" shelters are permitting folks to bring their pets with them. Bless everyone having to live through this right now. When you have lost all your possessions and home from water, I cannot imagine having to leave your pets.

Feel bad for the animals
Bravo! I was ground zero I Hurricane Hugo and would not go to a shelter because I could not take my pets. The building I stayed in was condemned after. Thankfully, we made it and my dog lived to age 14.5 and my cockatiel to age 24. People need their pets!

When we moved to turkey from California we brought our 2 cats and never and I mean NEVER did we think of leaving them behind and now we have 4 cats 1 saw abuse and he was rescued and the other was a neglected kitten who loves to cuddle I love them
Who would leave their pets and take off I would stay with them to the end before leaving them behind to die in a flood I would have left long before it flooded.
Haven't seen any parrots yet. Wonder what's going on with them.

leaving your pet in the upstairs bathroom hoping for the best u do relize u locked your pet in a room t drown and fwi even if the pet survies the flood how will it get out of the bathroom how will it eat your pet will die regardless if u leave it

My dogs would never abandon me. My dogs would give their life for mine without hesitation. I figure it is only right that I return that kind of loyalty and love. Hang tough people and pets of Texas. There are a lot of Oregonians out here thinking of you and wishing you the best. The worst of disasters brings out the best of humanity.

I would never leave my dogs behind, never! Either they go with me or I stay with them. All those poor animals left behind. I don't think it's a bad as what happened during Katrina. Thank Goodness for that. But still, just one left behind or abandoned is one too many. God Bless all those animals Big and small.

Is it bad that I want more info as to why people had to leave pets behind? I can't fathom it? I would make room, even if it's going to be an uncomfortable trip like that.
This is one reason why I have a 4x4 SUV.
I don't need a boat in East Tennessee. The biggest issues we have here arrive in the winter with iced roadways. We do get tornadoes. Some places do face flooding. But the topography of the land is hilly to mountainous which is unlikely to trap you from flooding. The crazy thing happened to be wildfires last November when an unusual drought hit this area.
People should seriously use stories like this to BE PREPARED for EVACUATION.
You could have to evacuate for a number of reasons. Anything from a gas leak, or environmental hazard, industrial disaster, and whatever else can happen requiring you to evacuate your home. You need a plan in place and vehicles ready to take you and your pets at once.
If I ever got caught in a hurricane, my first priority would be to make sure my dogs are okay, and ready to go. They are family. I'm never leaving them behind for ANY reason. If they can't go, then I'm staying with them.
Absolutely incredible who are these people that leave their pets behind - save for the deceased why WHY?? When you first got these pets did u guys think they were toys? They're living breathing sentient beings I would rather die with them. n what about the lady who locks 2 pets in the bathroom my God!

Please donate to all of the animal rescues. People usually get what they need, but so many animals don't.

Actually, in Texas, you can take your pets with you. After Hurricane Katrina, they enacted a new law that allows you to bring your pets with you in life threatening floods, fires, etc., Thousands of Houston Texans brought their pets with them. Shelters in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston allow pets. I work as an SPCA volunteer in Dallas and know this to be a fact.

I am so freaking happy that, that shelter had pet food, pet toys and even let blankets for these amazing animals. thank u god and thank you to all the people that DIDNT leave their pets behind. I'm in Florida and they said hurricane Irma might slide here and u know what? my little bag is packed and I will for sure take care of my 7 cats. I already have every bring planned. I'm thinking about putt my 7 cats in a large bin in case Irma does come my way.

When I was in high school I had a plan for if a tornado touched while I was in school. I knew which exit I could go out from without having staff stop me and I knew which streets I could run to get home faster. Once there I planned on grabbing my family's dog and hiding in the basement. Pets are family and if they hurt, it hurts you too

I would have to fit two cats in the same carrier, two more cats in separate (since they don’t get along with my other cats) then another two in harnesses because I don’t have that many carriers. If you think six cats is crazy, then just wait till I name my other pets.
So, then five gold fish would be but in the emergency tank of a container with a lid, (depending how fast we had to get out) and a betta would be transferred into its own little separate container. My hermit crabs will be easy to carry, even though it’s a big tank, it weighs a lot less than a tank filled with water.
I never had anything happen with the pets, since I never experienced a natural disaster where I live. But I can only imagine what it’s like.
I would definately not leave my home without my pets. All of them. They're in my care, it's not their fault we all suffer from global warming, they have the same right to be rescued than I have.

in Az the fire dept gives stickers for house windows letting rescuers know theres animals inside also disabled elderly people should have it posted so nobody gets left behind. your on my heart and mind Texas.
