I worked a show one year with some fire fighters. They assured us that with such a small crowd that the 200 feet was safe distance from the tubes. The children were playing on a playground slightly further away even. They dismissed me at one point because they said it was too crowded, so I went to join the crowd, heard a crack and turned to see their 4 tube mortar pod separate, pointing one in my direction, and one at the playground. One skipped across the ground and under everyone's chairs to detonate behind us all, and the other flew into the playground, bounced around on the set the kids were on, then went off about 40 feet above them. About 20 second degree burns between myself and the crowd of around 60. The kids thankfully were unharmed.

I had to take my brother to the ER for severe food poisoning on July 3rd one year. The ER was at a standstill because a family had stored fireworks under their deck. They grilled on the deck, embers fell through the slats, and the fireworks ignited. No one was killed, but adults and children were severely injured. It was awful. Be VERY careful about where you store your fireworks. Even one small ember can set off a horrific chain reaction.

Makes me think of the PSA I saw on fireworks safety. It showed two hands, and a ten second countdown started. As each number counted down, a finger on each hand would go missing, each digit showing a now-healed fireworks injury. By zero, it's just two scarred stumps where fingers used to be. I first saw this PSA as an adult and it still scared the bezeejus out of me. Please stay safe tonight, guys.

    1) As a young child, I watched as a fragment of a firework landed on my sister, resulting in burns to her chest and a great deal of damage to her hair.
    2) Years later, as an adult, I was at a party hosted by a guy who sold illegal fireworks as a side hustle. One night on a July 4th, he set off a mortar-style firework that wound up (purely accidentally) targeting the propane tank on his grill. It was a miracle we all weren't blown to bits that night.

One year my youngest wanted to go set off fireworks with the downstairs neighbor kids (he was 7). I told him he could only watch. Turns out the kids wanted to set them off right next to the house, I and the other mom said, "NO!" and told them they needed to set them off in the empty parking lot next door. They grumped but complied. A short time later we heard sirens nearby, Of course the older kids had to go check it out. Turns out a neighbor had done the exact same thing we warned the kids about and started his garage on fire. We got no arguements from then on. 10 years later and my kid still remembers.

When I was a child in the U.K., we had the Firework Code and the main rule was that fireworks had to be kept in a metal tin, and that you took them out one at a time and always replaced the lid. These tins were not stored anywhere near where you set off the firework at !

In Australia the use of fireworks by the public is banned or severely limited.
Generally speaking, only trained and licensed pyrotechnicians are permitted to possess and use fireworks.
The ban was legislated progressively from 1972 because children and adults were being severely injured.
We can still enjoy public shows, most notably the NYE Sydney show and local towns still have a public bonfire for Guy Fawkes Day (5th November) with fireworks display and carnival.
Anyway, enjoy your Independence Day celebrations.
    Cheers from Australia.

I will always remember the year when my family went to a friend's 4th of July party and their son lit a bottle rocket that skewed off course and flew into the window of the church across the street. Thankfully, the window was not designed to open and stayed intact, but imagine if it was open.

The closest major disaster to these in recent Australian history has to be the Australia Day plane crash of 2017. That accident canceled the fireworks for that year, now they don’t have air shows. I’m also surprised the 2012 San Diego firework show wasn’t mentioned.

We celebrated my grandparents' wedding anniversary on July 4 (yes they got married on the 4th of July) and it was decided that it was unsafe for them to drive over to my parents' house with all the fireworks going off. So my sister did all the driving and thank goodness she did. With all the fireworks (both legal and illegal) going off around our neighborhood, it was nuts.

We luckily live near one of the best burn centers in the country and he got help right away for his hand that was basically blown up! He was able to have some use of the hand after many, many surgeries. I've never liked to be around fireworks ever since.

I live in a state where, as long as you’re at 18 years of age or older, you can get Sergent low level ones at local stores, but some advice that I always use make sure that no one under the age of 18 touches any of them even if there are adults around also have a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby and ready to return on at any given moment and if you’re going to be the comp person who does it on grass wet the grass first soak it really really soak it if you have to and still have that hose nearby even after you soak it although if you can help it use concrete or pavement instead but still keep a fire extinguisher and or a garden hose close by and make sure any kids were watching stay as far back as possible and make sure any and all pets are inside the house and make sure who it ever is the one lighting. The fuses is able to have quick enough reflectors to get far enough back in quick enough time and those are just a few tips. I have learned since turning 18 and being able to purchase the things and do them on my own note I am 31 this year and yet this is one of the first years I haven’t been able to do it last two years I was doing it with my ex but well ex so that should explain it before I used to do it at my parents house, but I moved out even if they did but they hasn’t moved as well so I know my parents lived in a very rural area where we weren’t disturbing any neighbors either. Keep that in mind to also, if you have any neighbors who have been in the military make sure they don’t suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder. If you choose to sit any off because it could trigger their post traumatic stress disorder you don’t want to be that neighbor, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg on safety tips and just general kindness about doing it that I have I could go deeper but that would turn into a rant and I don’t think there’s enough room on the comments for me to put all of that I’d be reading forever, and this is already very long, so TLDR tried to do it on concrete or pavement not grass if have to do on grass soffit really well first key fire, stinger, sure and off garden hose. Keep kids and pets away make sure whoever laying them is 18 years or older, and has good reflexes just to touch the tip of the iceberg of safety tips

A few years back my parents and I had just finished playing a community band concert for the 4'th of July as the fireworks were going off. As we're helping to get the bands equipment on the truck we see a group of red fireworks go off within the pavilion that they were being fired from. I don't think anyone was hurt as they were automated, but I remember thinking that if anyone had been near that pavilion they would've been hurt if not killed because it was a few of the bigger fireworks used in the show.
