  • A second chance at life is hoped for by many but granted to very few. Delia Ephron is the screenwriter behind blockbuster rom-coms like "You’ve Got Mail," directed by her sister Nora Ephron. In her new memoir, "Left on Tenth," Delia relates how her life has, at times, resembled one of these films. It’s about finding love after loss - and exploring this love during her treatment for leukemia. Delia is now in remission and speaks with Walter Isaacson about what she’s learned.

Delia, you are so right. I am recovering from breast cancer. As a visual artist my response to the journey has been to paint a series of 8 paintings called "The Topic of Cancer". It saved my sense of self. It helped me feel in control.

Idk if empathy can be learned... These are my experiences: 1. An E.R. M.D. accused me of being "a drinker" when I had gallstone pancreatitis, 2. one rammed an examining hand in my son's rectum before surgery for a peri-anal abscess & made a homo-phobic remark, & 3. a resident told me he hoped he "didn't have to call me in the middle of the night" in front of my child admitted for Covid. I don't think the sadistic ones will benefit from Delia's book, but I wish they could, at least, watch their words.

Sigh. Both an ER doc and the pediatrician on call had the information and knowledge to treat 16 yr. teen. neither did. the treatment needed was On the Shelf: a Ph balancing saline IV drip. the pediatrician said he knew she would have a heart attack and chose to withhold the appropriate treatment in order to “teach her a lesson.” he instructed the nurse to keep raising the alarms ( pulse, blood pressure, etc.) . As an athlete she paced for over 2 hours as the alarms rang and the levels were repeatedly raised. By the time she coded, her heart was kaput. The state medical board refused to hold them accountable.

@@katsong3302 Horrible. In a hospital setting, accountability seems to have dried up. People who enter the field of medicine can have narcissistic tendencies, too, which foretell empathy deficiencies. I love the Ephrons & hope Delia's book is taken seriously in med school.

Suzanne I had the same experience with a doctor at a world famous clinic and it almost cost me my life. Their egos and narsissm at this place is horrendous.

And one has Empathy for Doctors who have to keep calm and analyse the combined problems of themselves along with their patient's.

My leukemia CLL diagnosis was from forever farm chemicals put in my car windshield vents by GOP fanatics at the Honda factory in Ohio. No charges.
