Ashkenazy. Zimmerman. Pollini. These 3 names are the pianists with absolute control over technic; everybody else come after those 3 names.

I love how Ashkenazy integrates the posthumous variations within the overall context of the piece. It made me realize how much I’ve disliked the model of adding them later before the finale. Wonderful performance!

I’ve got this marvellous music on a LP with Murray Perahia at the grand piano and I really love his interpretation but I must admit that this is really at the same level- really master class! This is a masterpiece by the composer considered it’s only no 13 in opusnumber! The theme is devised by Schumanns English friend William Sterndale Bennet.Alas what a genius he was Schumann! Bravo Vladimir!🎹🙏🏻🙏🏻

People forget Ashkenazy’s pianistic brilliance because he had too much of a need for musical expression….the piano simply couldn’t contain him, so he moved into conducting and took off like a rocket. I absolutely adore Perahia’s playing, which for me is most mesmerizing in his duets with Radu Lupu, another absolute monster genius, but he is somehow lacking the intense fire element that burns in Ashkenazy’s art, and also Lupu’s. For me, Perahia’s art lies in a subtlety which, while it’s intellectually fascinating and emotionally fulfilling, I wait for him to open it up and let the fire of a piece consume him combined with the excitement of listening to him control it. This can be heard again and again in this performance by Ashkenazy. I guess I’m trying to say that I look for the fullest kaleidoscope of emotional possibility in a pianist’s arsenal, and, for me, Ashkenazy hits so many more colors and patterns across more musical genres than every pianist I’ve heard. Luckily, I fully enjoy other brilliant artist’s work and love their contributions to the understanding of the works they play, unlike those with a strong bias who listen to others only to compare them very unfavorably with their favorite. You appear to be the same kind of listener! Please don’t imagine my intent here is to express anything but my own preferences….we can only speak for ourselves when discussing artists, and I would never wish to denigrate anyone else’s favorites!
