  • The Ngorongoro Shifting Sands, is a unique natural phenomenon within Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. It is a large, crescent-shaped dune of volcanic ash that is constantly moving and changing its shape.
The shifting sands are believed to be the result of the fine ash and sand that is blown off the nearby active volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai. The sand is very fine and light, making it easily carried by the wind. As the wind blows, the sand shifts and moves, creating ripples and patterns on the surface.
The dune is about 9 meters high and 100 meters long, and it moves at a rate of about 17 meters per year. Scientist begun recording and coding each year from 1969 to the present and the marks can be seen even today.
One of the most interesting things about the shifting sands is that they are able to move in different directions depending on the wind direction. This means that the dune can sometimes move several meters in just a few weeks..
The Shifting Sands is a popular attraction for visitors to witness the unique natural phenomenon. Do not try miss the shifting sand tour when you are in Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority.
