As for those steaks, they are select grade, the lowest you are allowed by USDA to see to humans. Tough as nails but still have flavor. Thanks! Being poor doesn't mean you can't splurge once in a while, even if it's from the Dollar Tree! There are a lot of cheap steaks that don't compare to the Dollar Tree ribeye no matter what they cost.
I had a ribeye sandwich everyday while I was in tech school. I had a bunch of ways that I would fix them different ways so it was never the same thing. I STILL ALOT of my shopping from DT, Save-alot or Aldi.
people keep comparing these to a cut you get at the bigger markets or a butcher your not…..it’s a ribeye none the less…its the tail end of what’s left after they get the cuts of ribeye that go to the bigger stores where you find your 90z,120z.ect….this is only a 3-4oz steak maybe…it’s like comparing an breakfast cut pork chop to an Iowa chop…I’m not fond of the brine they have in the package…as I believe it effects the coloring but for stuff like cheesesteaks, steakrolls,or anything where you need a thin cut instead of pounding it out they are already done
You've got great insight into what these steaks are. Your right, they don't really compare to the supermarket steaks, but for what they are, they're not bad. I would definitely use them for a steak sandwich or a breakfast steak. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
It reminds me of the steak in a diner's steak and eggs. Steak flavor but a little chewy and gristly. Even if you usually don't use it, have the A1 ready.
My friend turned me on to these about 12 years ago. They’re perfect for steak sandwiches. Haven’t had them in a while but will be getting damsons this weekend. They’re great with gravy and homemade mashed potatoes too
went today and got a large prime ribeye for Christmas eve for our family it cost me 343.00 my wife said it was 20.00 per pound yes the main reason we got it is because of Xmas eve and the kids and husbands and grandkids are excited about it merry Christmas and it is special for my wife and getting together with our family❤❤❤
I've taken those potatoes and seasoned them with butter, paprika, garlic, pepper, parsley and salt and roasted them in a disposable pan in the oven. The butter helps them render a little crispy on the outside, I guess from the starch coming out of the potato. Delicious. Adding those mushrooms in would probably make it even better.
Where did you get that simple timer? I use my phone but even that’s a pain. I cook my steaks 1 minute per side until I reach my temperature ail cast iron and finish in the oven
In my younger days I made many, many such meals as this. IMHO, you did the best thing you could have done with the asparagus and bacon - I absolutely ADORE Farmer John bacon because of its low price and 4-slice package. I'm a widower, and I generally never need more than four slices of bacon for any reason. The potatoes I would have microwaved until hot, mashed roughly with a fork (my mother-in-law refers to this not as mashed potatoes, but "assaulted potatoes"), and hit with butter. The steak appears to have jumped in quality (or at least size and cut) since the last time I went to Dollar Tree. The best usage I have found so far for Dollar Tree steak is to (YES) dry it as much as possible, chop up small, brown the bejeezus out of it in garlicky oil, and throw it into your spaghetti sauce. It's really good that way - try it. Note that this does NOT mean you shouldn't also put some sort of pork or pork grease - marinara sauces LOVE pork grease, and beef, while a nice addition, is NO substitute, no matter how greasy it may be. I have proved this on the stovetop many times.
@@chrisrainey3588 That's a good point. The product already comes packed in marinate. Adding a little extra seasoning could be good, but i suspect it already has plenty of sodium from the marinate.
You got me curious about them $3 steaks. I don’t go into dollar tree very often but have seen them steaks. I might have to give them a try. As for the music. I see nothing wrong with it
@rkmatt8761 I'd say the steaks are interesting. Not necessarily something to go out of your way for, but interesting to try. It would make a good sandwich steak. On a per ounce comparison, not that great of a deal. Thanks for watching.
Great video Ralph! Amazing what you can do with a little knowledge and ingenuity. My wife can make a garbage piece of steak melt in your mouth too. I still like a tomahawk, or prime rib though. 👍
I had no idea that Dollar Tree even sells perishable items! I live in the Silicon Valley (in the San Francisco Bay Area) and there aren't very many Dollar Tree stores. I might stop by and check them out.
@@ccchhhrrriiisss100 I had no idea either, till my son suggested the meal challenge. On a per ounce basis, it's probably not that great of a deal. But if you don't have a lot of money, and you want a steak, $3 for a thin steak sounds better than $15 - $19 dollars at a grocery store.
For many people around the world this would easily be the greatest meal of their entire life. Us westerners really do live in a bubble when we can eat this kind of food and be like, "Meh, it's alright I guess."
@@manoman0 No, it's a real cut of beef, but pretty much the lowest grade and cut very thin. If they didn't pack it in marinate, it would probably be a tuff cut.
First time here. Nice production. Reminds me of the steak breakfast I'd get late nights at the Golden Gate in old Vegas back in the mid 80s. Steak, 2 eggs, hash browns, coffee for about $3. Not much flavor, steak sauce a must.
@Lma1974 That's is a great question. The canned potatoes actually came out really good. Yes, I would consider keeping a can on hand. The steak is not big enough to be a main course, but i would consider buying it to use in a steak sandwich on a hoagie roll with mayo and toppings. The bacon and canned asparagus.....NO.
I HAVEN'T TRYED ANY OF THIER MEATS PRODUCTS! BUT FOR THE( CANED VIENNA SAUSAGE.)=CHILDHOOD GOODIES. hope that was unsalted butter? I may buy it to make a nice sandwich with some sweet onions tomatoes, lettuce &47sauce!
Make sure these are good ie safe to eat. I have seen people put in cart, walk around store for hour and then take it out and put on shelf of crafts whatever, they decided they didn’t want. So make sure they smell okay. Could get a few packs, cut the fat off. If it’s gray or yellow - probably not going to be decent to eat. But for stew, brown and season well and then add in onions, garlic, potatoes, carrots, add in broth (chicken, or I like Progresso French Onion soup, it’s vegetable based) and bring to fast simmer. Also before putting broth etc in, Add tablespoon flour., stir around until it’s cooked, get rid of raw taste. Then pour in broth and then into the crockpot and let go for a few hours until the meat is tender. In fact you might want to do the meat first brown and season, then put the broth in and into the crockpot - let it cook first 1/2 -3/4 hour while you work on the vegetables the same as mentioned above with seasoning and get the rest of the broth hot for this batch and all into the crockpot with the meat. Remember when adding flour, you need to cook it off in pan with the meat or meat and veggies for a few minutes to get rid of the raw flour. Add the broth into the pan slowly and stir until it’s well incorporated then add the next bit of broth until it’s all incorporated until smooth, no lumps and add in the rest of vegetables and more broth. It will need plenty of broth so the potatoes and carrots, etc have time to cook and get tender too. If this doesn’t make sense, then go and look at crockpot beef stew.
@@plips71755 Thanks for the warning. They seem to be sealed up pretty well, but you can't be too careful. Thanks for the great cooking tips for these as well. I appreciate your taking the time to leave such a great comment.
When I was in Tech school a Ribeye Sandwich from Dollar Tree was my lunch every day, Not always the same way, I would make them Cuban style, Philly, Traditional style with Ranch Tomato Swiss and onions, Garlic and butter, Mushroom and Onion, marinated in Bourbon, Bbq sauce with Coleslaw and so on. just because your eating on the cheap doesn't mean you have to eat ramen and beanie weanies.....
Accepting that it's a very thin steak (but hey, if it were any thicker you wouldn't be able to see the design on the plate through it!) makes a big difference in not cooking it WAY too long. Pretty much the same cuts as the 20 Ribeyes 30 Dollars guys, except theirs are even smaller. I still think my favorite cuts of meat are those at Sam's and Costco with the brand name "Reduced For Quick Sale."
@joltjolt5060 They seem to be pretty tender after being packed in marinate. The biggest difficulty is cooking a steak that's that thin without over cooking it.
I just walked to the dollar tree to grab one of these little suckers out of sheer curiosity. I have it in my hand right now. I am reading the label. It is stampede meat Inc. and it is distributed in Illinois.
@MarkChilluffo you're right. It's cheaper than a typical grocery store ribeye, but it's significantly lower in quality. It's good enough for a steak sandwich, but not much else. It's probably meant for the same buyer that buys used tires and "rents to own" furniture and appliances. Not necessarily a good deal, but might be all someone can afford.
If that steak it 5.5 ounces and it's 30% liquid by weight then the steak is 3.85 ounces itself. Which works out to 79 cents/ounce, or $12.49/lb. That $3 steak isn't that much of a bargain. You can get "fresh" (not frozen) choice ny strip steak at Walmart for a comparable price per pound that isn't loaded with sodium.
@@ralphknowsfood sadly, some the "bargains" in these Dollar Tree/Family/General stores are anything but bargains. For example, I purchased a 500 count of generic brand paper plates at a Dollar Tree for $5. In my mind, that was a good price. However, the same count of equivalent quality Great Value plates were $2.98.
@samueljaramillo4221 Good point about the music. That's why I have changed it for my later videos. Now I only have a little background music at the very end of videos. Thanks for watching.
@lynettedundon1410 Hi Lynette. That's my wife's name also. I know that the same company also sells packaged meat at Walmart. The label says it's a product of the USA, but it's probably a cut below "Select", possibly an end cut of a larger piece of meat.
@brookswilson1072 They are very thin. It would be hard to grill them without over cooking them. You might be able to do it if you did a grill version of a reverse sear. First cook on the "cooler" side of the grill followed by a flash sear on the direct heat side.
I bought those steaks before. They were so thin you could not get it even medium rare. and it was freezer burned. I got better bull steaks from the slaughterhouse. If you have a Poco Loco you can get 1-inch thick T-bones and Ribeye's for $5.99 and $6.99 a pound.
@sirjhonson8218 Yeah...they are tricky to cook because of how thin they are. I'm not familiar with Poco Loco, but I'll check it out. Maybe we have something similar close by. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I've seen Emmy do the dollar store challenges, but she hardly seasons them and basically goes from package to cooktop. This is no wagyu. Im sure with a little sprucing up and flavorful sides, you can get a tasty cheap meal, just like you proved.
I had this steak about five years ago, tasted bland, and like tasted like eating cardboard, pretty bad... Maybe I'll give it another try after watching this video.
@ericgregory9478 I mentioned that it already came premarinated from the meat packer so it had plenty of salt already. Extra pepper was added at minute 4:53.
I only have one criticism, Ralph, the music soundtrack in the background is irritating due to being too loud. Like water dripping on my forehead. Next time you create a video; perhaps whomever mixes it will tone the repeating soundtrack down a bit? I think I’m not the only one who would appreciate it. That way I won’t turn off the volume- Thanks

Dollar Tree food is such a predatory practice. They package the foods in portions that make it seem cheap but is often 2x or 3x the price of grocery stores for the same portion. Also that steak is more like medium well...there is nothing "rare" left to it from the video

people keep comparing these to a cut you get at the bigger markets or a butcher your not…..it’s a ribeye none the less…its the tail end of what’s left after they get the cuts of ribeye that go to the bigger stores where you find your 90z,120z.ect….this is only a 3-4oz steak maybe…it’s like comparing an breakfast cut pork chop to an Iowa chop…I’m not fond of the brine they have in the package…as I believe it effects the coloring but for stuff like cheesesteaks, steakrolls,or anything where you need a thin cut instead of pounding it out they are already done
