Hello Black Friday I love your channel as I've subscribed.. It's humorous, love the music thanks for posting the music as it adds to my music some are new to me.. Keep on being you.. Your awesome
Kinda surprised that Anne Rice was not included in this list. I went to one of her book signing events during the late 90's in Southern California. There were probably about 500 hundred people who showed up and the vast majority were dressed up Goth style, myself included. It was a real treat to meet her and she looked divine all decked out in a black Victorian wedding gown. Love her to bits! I love your look...so detail oriented and gorgeous!
Very much agreed Anne Rice should have been on there and regardless that's she's changed her lifestyle doesn't mean she wasn't an influential person in the Goth/Vampire community and she definitely was. I know she's still very much in that community because she throws a Vampire Ball every year in New Orleans. This year being her last Because of her health.
Anne Rice should indeed be on the list. So should Horace Walpole, Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Marie Corelli, Matthew Lewis, John William Polidori for their amazing works of gothic literature.
@@katcoffman3293I think she made up for her later Christian stuff by the contrast of how extreme her earlier "sleeping beauty " series is ( written under pen name)
I think the only way someone would interpret the list as cringe-worthy is if they are holding to an "elitist" standard. Basically the hipster of Goths. All the choices are legitimate, the honorable mentions are iffy at worst, it's overall a great list. I was expecting something awful but was pleasantly surprised.
Yeah, did they hold strictly to just original music type goths, no. But they did an AMAZING job covering like every way someone enters the subculture, from visual and film to literary to music and even the mood adjacent musical variants, I honestly have never seen a better mrs mojo list
I can see Amy Lee being an honorable mention, at least to people in my age group. Evanescence was coming into popularity during my preteen-early teen years and whereas their music isn't what you would call textbook goth, I think that their look (specifically Amy Lee's) and even some of their lyrics could transcend into goth territory. I know that when I was young, Amy Lee was one of the first gothic looking women I'd seen and I fell in love with it.
+Kai_Decadence yeah i think you're right she also said in another interview what's with the black I'm not goth see I'm happy those were her exact words.
@Silver Legion I have not researched it myself. I don't think many people are aware, thus him not being an outcast. Just look up "Morissey nazi" and some things should pop up. I think he has worn like, a swastika either on a t-shirt or as an arm band a few years back, but I have a pretty bad memory (adhd) so research it yourself. I know for fact he is a "far-righter" (which isn't necessarily a Nazi) though.
I think Amy Lee is fair as an honourable mention. especially for people my age and a little older than me she and evanescence were the first introduction to alternative/gothic culture. I wouldn't really call myself goth but I love the culture and a lot of my gothic friends do love evanescence.
Yep! For me as a 90's kid, Amy Lee and Evanescence was more directly involved in my becoming goth than Siouxsie or The Cure (though obviously they deserve credit as the founders of goth!). I wouldn't have put Amy in the top 10, but a brief mention was warranted. Hell, the new female vocalist for Cradle of Filth credits Amy Lee as a big influence on her coming to gothic metal, and we're the same age and from the same area of Ontario, so Evanescence was definitely a major part of goth in early 2000s Canada.
I'm a tad bit younger but I always heard evanescence on the radio as a kid and got so into it and I loved her a lot. I'm just barely a 90's baby at 97 but I was raised on older rock and roll, punk, some metal, and I had a little of my own taste in music develop after so I was highly attracted to darker and more different music like evanescence, t.A.T.u., Emily Autumn, just things a lot of people around me weren't interested in.
+Bec t.A.T.u and Evanescence are awesome. I will never stop listening to their songs. XD You're a couple of years younger than me. Nice to see some fellow mid/late 90's babies here like me. :D Agreed, I remember not many people liking Evanescence, t.A.T.u, Foo Fighters and some other artists and bands I listened/still listen to. People always talked about Britney Spears or something instead. lol I mean, Britney Spears had a catchy song here and there, but I wasn't a huge fan. xD
I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am that Peter Steele made the list. He never really considered himself to be goth but he was essentially, his ideas and his music and style is what really brought me into the goth world. Rest in peace
Bee pot your I love the cure is right next to I love Tim Burton and though yours has a great many likes it's depressing that the Burton one has so many more. More...than..the Cure..it just doesnt seem possible, this is going to bug all night.
+hissyfit4711 I think because she became her character. She was famous because of who she became. She wasn't playing a role written for her. Her and her character where basically one and the same.
+hissyfit4711 I think it's because Cassandra and Elvira pretty much became one and the same. There has been a few Morticia Addams but there will only ever be one Elvira.
Low-key want to be full out goth or alternative but: 1. Don't have the makeup 2. Don't have the clothes 3. Don't have the money for makeup or clothes 4. Don't have the fashion sense or talent for makeup or clothes 5. Don't have the confidence
Much of my makeup is from elf or Wet N Wild. It's cheap as heck. So there's your makeup. I have gotten some awesome goth stuff from the thrift shop. Spend some time looking at goth youtube videos for ideas. I HIGHLY recommend Angela Benedict. She does cheap 90's goth outfits. You don't need to spend a ton to present goth. Seriously, some cheap drug store makeup and thrift shop clothes can do it.
my mother once said that alice cooper was the marilyn manson of her youth. i still like them both, but i don't see alice cooper as a typical goth. he's a shock-rock-person that you could also put into the horror-punk-section. but i guess that depends on which aspects of his personality you are thinking about.
***** yes, i agree. and i guess sometimes there isn't a strict rule and some parts of the art/music might have an overlapping character and it depends on the viewer and which parts of a musician's way you look at. ps: so jealous that you met him :)
***** somehow i knew before that you have an affinity to misfits ;) great to hear that the vips you met still seem to know who made them great and spend time on talking to fans and giving autographs.
***** yes, i am german, but the name is just a nickname which i use for games. i gave my first titan quest character this name. sometimes i think that many "extreme" characters in the music business are very intelligent and therefore they are able to see certain things from a different perspective and put them into words. maybe that's because the pop(ular) music is way to boring and nearly every song follows the same structure and patterns. to me popmusic is like a plain piece of plastic and the metal/wave/goth/punk etc. is more like a wooden furniture with character. you don't forget about the songs and bands in years even decades.
***** thank you! some people react like it's weired to speak in pictures, so to say. so nashville, the city of music?! any suggestions for music? i always look for inspirations because there are so many artists out there who are totally worth to know. (of course i know the misfits, the exploited, ramones but apart from them there must be so many bands who make great music.)
I thought the list was great and I personally do see Amy Lee as my personal Goth 'idol'. While Evanescence may not be Goth music; I'd consider her to be a big part of the community. She's been the biggest influence in my life.
Valentine Mistress But Fallen is what got them know. That's when I found out about them too. It's still my #1 favorite album of all time. Origin is pretty awesome too 💙
***** Sorry, but no they aren't. Evanescence is my favorite band and I love them to death. They're rock, not Goth. Check out bands like Bauhaus or Souxie and the Banshees or The Cure from the early years- they're Goth bands.
Yeah on several occasions Amy Lee has rejected the Gothic title for herself and the band. Evanescence is just a rock band. you can see by their latest album (self titled). Still has dark themes but it absolutely doesn't mean it's gothic. BUT she still did inspire a lot of younger people into becoming goth or at least alternative :)
Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira...not only beautiful but so kind! She was a patient in my mom's office a few years ago and gave my daughter such a lovely gift! My daughter, in turn, made her a wonderful picture which Elvira was so excited about. She most gracious and kind.
Heck, the Muppets' caricature of him, Vincent Twice Vincent Twice & The Count (Ah, Hah, Ha!) should probably have been in there, if there'd been room. I know the Count was one! One big influence! (Ah, Hah, Ha!) and then Vincent Twice Vincent Twice makes Two! Two big influences (Ah, Hah, Ha!) on goth. ;-D
What about Maila Nurmi??? Vampira! The first horror host EVER, and also a weirdo in real life! Not a creation of a factory but of her own personal imagination.
I meant Elvira is just a character to me, whereas Morticia is an icon to me. Morticia seems more real life and Elvira seems over the top, more like a mockery. I should have been a little more clear.
I am a big Evanescence fan and I do believe Amy Lee earned her spot in the end. She may not be a big icon in the gothic genre but she did influence a lot of gothic people with her own hand-made outfits that was gothic-like. Also her music has an eerie tone about it, and her lyrics are also gothic-like. Not traditional but definitely goth. I hate it when they call Evanescence emo. Emo didn't even exist at the time.
yeah i agree she is not emo she takes darkness and brings beauty she is almost like Marilyn's little sister to me in the music world with her angelic but soul touching voice
Emo was in full force since the 90's. I do think that she has some goth cred, but her musical style is more Alternative, pop, metal, and rock with a goth aesthetic.
She fits as a route some people take to enter goth, the list really covered all the possible paths in for goth, from the film/visual to literary to adjacent music and even got some of the heaviest hitters of the mainstream goth culture, fuck they even covered goths who got here through witchcraft. I definitely feel like this was a project of secret passion over at mrs mojo. I hone6have not seen a better list before or since from them
Peter Steele deserves to be on the list for sure💔 I don't know if you're personally a fan but Type O negative has such amazing music and they deserve more attention💚 I love Pete
+Tessa “Ye Whyze Owle” I know they aren't typically recognized as a goth band buuuut I've always considered them to be. They just have that general sound but they're unique at the same time lol
I saw them June 23 at the PNC Music Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina and they were unbelievably good. Better than their recordings, if that is possible. Awesome first concert for me.
+Susanna Powers I WAS SO CLOSE TO GOING TO SEE THEM IN CHARLOTTE OMG them being in North Carolina, let alone only an hour away from me, made me want to die ;^; I'm glad you got to see them, though, because that's amazing ♡
They did a great job of tackling goth from every angle, like you got literary goths, film goths, orthodox music goths and other macabre musical origins for damn near everyone who would describe themselves as goth on here It's honestly like the ideal of a mrs mojo list, def better than some of their old drag ones
I think the cringe part was : •Aliester Crowley cuz he is not a goth at all , he's a satanist occultist and psychopatch •alice cooper cuz he's a shock rocker ,not goth at all , at least Marilyn Manson was semi industrial •Amy Lee this one needs no explanation its obvious lol
+Tan +Tan Their material isn't classically gothic. Crowley magic practice is satanic and is a-typical bad press for goths. Amy Lee's music is not classically gothic. It's in a nu-goth sort of music area at best. Alice Cooper does not have classically gothic music. Marilyn Mason's music is not classically gothic. His shock rocker and somewhat juvenile form of music got me as a child in to shock rock, etc. He's a nu-goth icon at best. So yea. Goths can be in to it, it's fine, everyone is allowed to like who they like. Classic goths however would not be automatically say like, "oh yea Alice Cooper. He's a goth icon." He doesn't make gothic music as his main genre. Icons are usually at the top, the beginning, purely gothic. Classic.
+Kai_Decadence Yeah Manson was signed to his label. But what about his later albums, only Antichrist Superstar and some tracks of Portrait of American family had industrial metal sound.Eat me drink me was a gothic rock album and Pale Emperor was gothic metal with blues influence. And he had a gothic look too.
+Kai_Decadence Yeah you are right I do think Pale Emperor doesn't have thath much of goth sound but on his official site they stated he was going for some kind of "gothic" sound.
+enigmatik I agree with most your assessment of who was "cringe-worthy" for being on this list, and for those that I agree with, the why's. I disagree with your assessment of Aliester Crowley completely. I DO think he belongs on the list. Also, (and this is @ RaelleMejias also) he was NOT a Satanist. That was Anton LeVey who wrote the Satanist Bible. If you even listened to the video, the say Crowley was a magician and a mystic and that he founded the religion "Thelema" which is nothing like Satanism at all. Satanists are in fact atheists, while Thelema is a religion based upon the philosophical Law of the same name, which states: The law of Thelema is "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under will." He was called a devil worshiper in his time, likely due to the fact that pretty much anything that was an alternative religion was called "devil worship" by mainstream "Christians," and the "title" has stuck. I apologize if this comes across as a bit of a rant, but as an eclectic Pagan, I get really irate when things get labeled as Satanist when (1) the person doing the labeling clearly has no clue what Satanism is even about, and confuses it with supposed "devil worship" and (2) what they are labeling as Satanist isn't even close to Satanism.
Trent reznor is Marilyn Manson's producer as well as a producer for a lot of Gothic industrial acts. I really think he should be where Marilyn Manson is on the list as he's a major contributor to modern goth music
plus, even though his music was more industrial he did enjoy goth bands (and a bit of fashion in the Broken era) taking lot's of influence from them. Part of the reason he was chosen to induct The Cure in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I think Amy Lee and Trent Renzor were the "gateway" musicians into goth for a lot of people at the time - I was a punk teen, and Evanescene and NIN both had some of the music qualities I was into, while simultaneously exposing me to other elements.
What you said about Marilyn Manson is so true. People feel ashamed of admitting that they like him, but I'm not. I love his music. I'm more ashamed of saying that I don't like Tim Burton, but there, I said it. Please don't hate me.
I love older Burton but the new stuff is just not doing it for me AT ALL. Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands --- all fantastic! Also, I LURVE Marilyn Manson. Post punk has my heart but Manson is great!
I love MM I grew up listening to antichrist superstar all trough high school and even know. I like his new stuff and I'm excited to see him on August 14th 🤘🏻
I had the biggest crush on Trent Reznor when I was younger lol .. he gets better looking with age that guy! 2 of the best concerts I've been to in the last few years was The Cure and Marilyn Manson. Have always been a huge fan of their music. So awesome!
Amy Lee was one of icons when i was kid even though i was never goth, by the way can you please explain me what's with the capital letter on profile icons, i have been seen this all over the TH-cam coment section, i'm extremely curious....
Trent Reznor does definitely deserve an honorable mention, if for nothing else- he got Manson started in the music business. I feel like Peter Steele should've got his own spot but there are so many amazing icons to mention. Robert Smith is a great number one choice. This video made me pretty happy actually and now I've got to go listen to a bunch of music!
A detail that some seam to forget when seeking out accurate goth musicians, is how said musicians actually sound, as apposed to how they look. Of course, most bands wear the spikes, leather, fishnets (oh my!), but others such as joy division, the smiths, or even Depeche mode appear almost completely average upon first glance. One would never even consider them as remotely "goth", unless (as you've stated) they did some degree of research on the matter. That must obviously be why so many seem to believe (falsely, of course) individuals such as Marilyn Manson, Amy Lee, Alice Cooper, and Rob Zombie as iconic within the goth genre. In reality, our genre started, and (for the most part) remains underground, so they couldn't possibly be goth, due to how often they cater to the mainstream. The sooner the self-proclaimed "normal people" discover this common mistake to be what it is, the better.
***** The aesthetic is musically expressed through poetic and often bizarrely romantic lyrics, accompanied by baritone vocals (often with reverb affect) and prominently somber instrumentals. It is never required to involve or show disturbing imagery for petty attention to better get them into the mainstream. If you honestly believe you know a thing about goth music just because you decided to show a complete stranger (that's myself, in case you managed to miss it) gratuitous rudeness, you're nothing but a mere snob, and possess no place in this thread, since you wish to spread nothing but cancerous negativity left and right.
Off topic a tad, but I would have actually loved to see Marilyn Manson play the role of the Joker in Suicide Squad. I feel like that would have been a perfect fit. Is that just me?
Oh my gosh! I thought that too! Y'know because he did that song with Avril Lavigne which was about Harley Quinn or something and I was like "He would make a great Joker tbh." ^^
I agree with everything but putting shock rockers in there. I don't think Trent Reznor is any less of a gothic icon than Marilyn Manson. Both of them are loved by a lot of goths, but don't make gothic music. They did a pretty good job though and obviously had done their homework.
Can we take a second of how much I love this channel? I am no where near goth or into its following but I love love love love this channel, great personality and I honestly have come to love the goth following and have learned a lot following you!
Sobia Saleem Yeah, but Reznor's style and aesthetic was much more industrial and alternative rather than goth. If anything, Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy should've been an honorable mention over Trent. Trent might've helped Manson get big, but Manson owes a colossal stylistic debt to Skinny Puppy
It was opening for N.I.N. on tour that brought them almost instant fame. Without this recognition,M.M.surely would have faded in obscurity, leaving nary a demo tape as proof the band existed at all!
Put Ian in Manson's spot and drop Manson's ass down into the honorable mentions and this list would have actually been pretty on point. Watchmojo actually did OK for once, I'm shocked.
Good point, I guess there are a lot of iconic artists who could be in a list like this, but they might be slightly too obscure to register in the mainstream media probably.
I love how you have that red filled in on your waterline it blends in with your eyes so well and makes your eyes stand out and look like they're full and flooding or bit bloodshot.
Caves influence ran far and wide, not only music and fashion(though an icon of both)with his arts poetry films novels etc. He was there, from the very beginning with"The birthday party" esp."bats", and came to be a founder of the genre, deserving of at least fifth place!
talktal so you don't like "the beautiful people" or "Sweet dreams" or any other he has done before? Even though he isn't the original singer for "sweet dreams".
Their not on the list because if you paid attention to the video they said only real life people are on the list and Wednesday Adams and Morticia are not Real life people but characters in t.v. shows and movies.
Reznor is deffo a goth icon amongst the people I know. The Sisters and the Nephilim should have been on there a s well. As for Alice Cooper, don't take the piss!
Somehow no mention of Andrew Eldritch from The Sisters of Mercy, David Vanian of The Damned, Dinah Cancer of 45 Grave, the late Rozz Williams from Christian Death & Shadow Project, Wayne Hussey from The Mission, Monica Richards from Strange Boutique & Faith and the Muse, or actress Theda Bara... smh
unfortunately it is a top 10 and not a top 20 or 30. but I definetly think two of those guys should be there instead of alice and marilyn. especially switch out manson for rozz, rozz was a huge inspiration on the american scene, a fascinating person, and he paved the way for marilyn. rozz walked so marilyn could walk
That head dress is lovely. I'm not a goth outside but my inner self is. You have a new subscriber. Love love your positivity and how you carry yourself. Keep up the good awesome content. Love from Jersey 💋
I feel Pete Steele should have been in place of Alice Cooper. Type O Negative, for me, is one of the top Goth Metal bands of all time.... and my favorite! At least Pete got mentioned 🙂
I saw a really old interview with her once; it's a special bra that's more or less indestructible and pretty much the tata version of a chastity belt, LOL. I believe if memory serves, she said it was specially made and she doesn't wear it unless she's doing her Elvira look. That video also contained behind-the-scenes footage of her putting on her makeup, which took somewhere in the ballpark of 1-2 hours, ish. It used to be on YT, before they started taking everything down for copyright. My mom was a huge fan of hers in the 70s/80s and raised me as such
I'm thrilled Alice Cooper made it onto this list. His better known songs may not have as traditionally gothic a sound but he does have some incredibly haunting and dark songs.I think his contribution and massive influence to the morbid side of music, image and performance is impossible to ignore, yet I don't feel he gets much recognition from the gothic community.
The true Godfather of goth was poet Lord (George Gordon) Byron. The aesthetic and massive pop culture movement he drove (poets were the equivalent to musicians now) at the time was virtually identical and the UK bands mentioned here were heavily influenced by Byron and his contemporaries like Mary Shelley and Poe. Thus, the late 70s moniker 'New Romantics' in homage'.
How about Christopher Lee (aka Count Dooku) he also played Dracula in several films. ☺ And for films I would nominate Bram Stokers Dracula with Gary Oldman from 1992.
just realized I love all these things in this video. I told my mom my goth phase would never end even though I'm too lazy to do my makeup and hair everyday like I used to when I was young
I don't think they classify her as a character per say mainly because she came up with the personality and look just like most of the musicians like Alice Cooper and Manson had. So while it is not her daily, it is the personality that is undeniably her, and why it is so difficult the find a replacement for her to retire. Manson and Cooper both started out mild mannered and faded, and submerged into their personality creations and ended up living them more full time is the only difference. Cooper announcing his drug and alcohol binge addictions fueling it to the point of near death before he realized he had to separate the two, one for life and one for stage. So again going back to the no characters that can be used and left like lydia or\ and reused to fit scenes with completely new people like say batman with a dozen different actors but still all recognized as THE batman. So they are character icons wording seperations being the issue of definement. Actually be upset if she wasn't on the list to be honest, multiple films, movie shows, comic book series, reality show, figurines, fan clubs, costume features, make up features, etc. She is a real person, just with the Elvira split personality. lol
Definitely not emo!! She herself looks kind of goth when she's dolled up, but Evanescence is rather a symphonic Metal band like for instance Nightwish.
No Evanescence is emo, the lyrics she writes are less rebellious but more internal struggle, that's where the dividing line is. That desn't make them bad, I enjoy them
+Silver Fox Nope, not at all. Evanescence is some sort of an alternative metal/rock band, but definitely not symphonic metal, and much less something close to Nightwish or any other similar band.
+Silver Fox I'm sorry, but Evanescence will never be even close to Nightwish. Some of their older work may be metal-ish, but their new stuff and the whole opus is kind of weak. It's the kind of music you listen to when you are first getting into an alternative subculture.
you should of been mentioned too. your vids turned me on to Goth culture. i am 100% metal. i was born with molten iron pumping through my heart. but i always try to see all your vids. and my 6yr. old loves your fashion and style.
I didn't know this list existed until I saw you review it. This list was actually one of their more well-thought-out ones. I might've re-ordered some of them, but I think they were all good choices.
I also agree. I think Amy Lee does influence a lot of goths, however it's the fact she is more popular and listened to by 'emo's'. I also think its a bit like Marylin Manson, where people like it but don't want to admit it because of the fact it's more mainstream.
I know where your coming from, but as an emo kid growing up I can safely say that Amy Lee was more of a babybat obession, like linkin park and slipknot. Like, middle school 'goth' music lol.
It was a really good list in my opinion. Think people saying it was cringey were those same people you mentioned that insist that their taste in music in so obscure you'd have never heard of them. I was super impressed that Pete he's not exactly a house hold name. I feel like there were a couple missed out that should have been on there for sure and I did laugh at Amy Lee getting a mention. I just subscribed to you based on this video. I enjoyed your genuine seeming reactions and lack of pretension . I look forward to more videos.
I love Amy Lee tho. she has a goth looking. btw about band, I think nightwish is a bit goth, but mix with power metal. then Sharon den Adel has a romantic goth as I see
Amy Lee is only goth looking for her music though. In her general life she isn't really like that. Cool woman nonetheless lol loved her when I was younger and still do
Saw the Cure this past June here in Denver. They struggled through the show as the altitude left them breathless. Was still worth the money spent. ❤️❤️
oh, so THAT'S how her name is pronounced "susie sue". I always read it as "sou swee... swu soo... she sells sea shells by the sea shore". I honestly was perplexed by her name.
More and more he is a huge segway for people getting into goth We need to be accepting of anything that is inspiring people to identify as goth, I mean fuck if someone told me they got into goth by die antwoord introducing them to counter culture and then falling down the dark rabbit hole I would be like "yeah makes sense"
Also a lovely thank-you to whoever sent me this beautiful nose-ring, I've worn it ever since it arrived! :D ♡ ♡ ♡
I love your channel you always cheer me up
Kind of reactionary lately? Just kidding.
:)

Lani Kelly she's changed her lifestyle
Very much agreed Anne Rice should have been on there
and regardless that's she's changed her lifestyle doesn't mean she wasn't an influential person in the Goth/Vampire community and she definitely was. I know she's still very much in that community because she throws a Vampire Ball every year in New Orleans. This year being her last Because of her health.
true, the only things that kinda sucked was when she brought out her christian books. They weren't very good.
I agree 100%. Her music is goth, it's just not traditional goth. It's much like bands such as Within Temptation, Nightwish, Sirenia, Delain, ect.
I was going to mention Within Temptation, it seems they go hand and hand with Evanescence.
Thank you! My thoughts exactly. No she isn't traditional goth but for anyone growing up in the late 90's and early 2000's she definitely is an icon.
Amy Lee said in a interview that she is not goth and never was she also kind of made fun of goths in a way.
+Kai_Decadence yeah i think you're right she also said in another interview what's with the black I'm not goth see I'm happy those were her exact words.
Rozz Williams- Christian Death
Dinah Cancer-45 Grave
Carl McCoy- Fields of the Nephilim
Brandon Lee- the Crow
Sisters of Mercy
they didnt even mention a single one.. this list lacks so much. wot abot Dave Vanian and Patricia Morrison. :(
Brandon Lee being in The Crow would not make him goth, what else besides The Crow makes Brandon Lee goth?
Carl Mccoy... i still have a crush on him.
@@ravenshadowz2343 Elvira was on there....
@@ravenshadowz2343 he still deserves the spot more than that pig manson
I think helena bonham carter should've been on the list
Agree.
Nikola Wright yeah, I mean they're saying her characters are influencial, Soo Tim Burton?
Yes agreed! Her and Johnny Depp. Should of been on that list.
Agree completely.
Where Is Andrew Eldritch from The Sisters of The Mercy And Lux Interior ? 😁
Siouxsie and the banshees tho , dear prudence and the passenger omg I'm in love 😍
I hope you wrote this comment on friday
Ian Curtis, Robert Smith, and Morrissey are my Holy Trinity.
Mollyishere I WAS JUST ABOUT TO SAY MOZZ he’s my sad icon
Yes!!!
Yass
Silver Legion I don't know if he's goth, but he is far right. I'm fairly certain he is a Nazi.
"how does she mix that sexiness and silliness with no effort?"
erm
look at you???????
I think Amy Lee is fair as an honourable mention. especially for people my age and a little older than me she and evanescence were the first introduction to alternative/gothic culture. I wouldn't really call myself goth but I love the culture and a lot of my gothic friends do love evanescence.
100% agree with ya!
People always talked about Britney Spears or something instead. lol I mean, Britney Spears had a catchy song here and there, but I wasn't a huge fan. xD
Evanescence isn't goth though...
I love Tim Burton!
Ava Grace Same :P
Sameeee
Doesn’t everyone ❤️
NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHIRSTMAS IS MY LIFE
I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am that Peter Steele made the list. He never really considered himself to be goth but he was essentially, his ideas and his music and style is what really brought me into the goth world. Rest in peace
God I love the cure.
bee pot same
Bee pot your I love the cure is right next to I love Tim Burton and though yours has a great many likes it's depressing that the Burton one has so many more. More...than..the Cure..it just doesnt seem possible, this is going to bug all night.
Just had them playing on my computer today...all day.
Macht Nichts Sei Mann love ur pfp 😌😌
It"s my favorite band😊✌
Elvira is such a sweet heart! I got to meet her some years back.
She is super nice to her fans. ^_^
They said they were going to only put real people on there, and then they put Elvira in the list. Weird.
Low-key want to be full out goth or alternative but:
1. Don't have the makeup
2. Don't have the clothes
3. Don't have the money for makeup or clothes
4. Don't have the fashion sense or talent for makeup or clothes
5. Don't have the confidence
Satirical Vivi + they don't goth at all
Satirical Vivi I feel you
That and my parents wouldn’t let me
Much of my makeup is from elf or Wet N Wild.
Be like YouYouYou and video yourself rocking out to Goth music in your car. Don't need clothes or fashion sense, you just need the music!
Was waiting for the Addams Family characters or Lily Munster.
The list was real people only.
Emmalee would have love Yvonne to be on there
They said in the beginning that goth characters is for another list.
Real people list not characters
Samantha Eastwood Bella Lugosi though? He was an actor portraying Dracula ie character.
my mother once said that alice cooper was the marilyn manson of her youth. i still like them both, but i don't see alice cooper as a typical goth. he's a shock-rock-person that you could also put into the horror-punk-section. but i guess that depends on which aspects of his personality you are thinking about.
*****
yes, i agree. and i guess sometimes there isn't a strict rule and some parts of the art/music might have an overlapping character and it depends on the viewer and which parts of a musician's way you look at.
ps: so jealous that you met him :)
*****
somehow i knew before that you have an affinity to misfits ;) great to hear that the vips you met still seem to know who made them great and spend time on talking to fans and giving autographs.
*****
yes, i am german, but the name is just a nickname which i use for games. i gave my first titan quest character this name.
sometimes i think that many "extreme" characters in the music business are very intelligent and therefore they are able to see certain things from a different perspective and put them into words. maybe that's because the pop(ular) music is way to boring and nearly every song follows the same structure and patterns. to me popmusic is like a plain piece of plastic and the metal/wave/goth/punk etc. is more like a wooden furniture with character. you don't forget about the songs and bands in years even decades.
*****
thank you! some people react like it's weired to speak in pictures, so to say. so nashville, the city of music?! any suggestions for music? i always look for inspirations because there are so many artists out there who are totally worth to know. (of course i know the misfits, the exploited, ramones but apart from them there must be so many bands who make great music.)
Personally, having a memory that extends from before Manson was famous, yes. Your mom is correct!
Edgar allen Poe is one of my biggest influences for dark poems and dark novels that Im trying to watch
AMY LEE YES I DONT CARE WHO DISAGREES WITH ME I LOVE HER AND I LOVE EVANESCENCE
AMY LEE IS GODDESS!!!
+xShameful Metaphors YEEES
+becca kornaski YES SHE IS
Shes lovely but I wouldn't call her a goth icon.
omg yes i love her music !! i sing them all the time !!
I thought the list was great and I personally do see Amy Lee as my personal Goth 'idol'. While Evanescence may not be Goth music; I'd consider her to be a big part of the community. She's been the biggest influence in my life.
Same, she's always had this dark tone to her music, and her dark victorian style always appealed to me...
Saeber the Pride Queen They came out in 1998...Fallen came out in like 2003
Valentine Mistress But Fallen is what got them know.
Vincent Price was shown twice but didn't make the list? I think he should've been on there instead of Alice Cooper.
I was thinking that too.
he should've been on it but so should've alice
Heck, the Muppets' caricature of him, Vincent Twice Vincent Twice & The Count (Ah, Hah, Ha!) should probably have been in there, if there'd been room. I know the Count was one! One big influence! (Ah, Hah, Ha!) and then Vincent Twice Vincent Twice makes Two! Two big influences (Ah, Hah, Ha!) on goth. ;-D
What about Maila Nurmi??? Vampira! The first horror host EVER, and also a weirdo in real life! Not a creation of a factory but of her own personal imagination.
Amen
Agree...
Yeah she was so ahead of her time
IAN CURTIS IS ONLY HONORABLE MENTION BUT MARILYN MANSON MADE IT ON?! And no Vincent Price? Arghhhh!
Also, Elvira is just a character. I sooner would have chosen Morticia Addams...
Black Kats and Baby Bats morticia Addams is a character!
I meant Elvira is just a character to me, whereas Morticia is an icon to me. Morticia seems more real life and Elvira seems over the top, more like a mockery. I should have been a little more clear.
At least they were shown price multiple times!
No Addams family, no Vincent Price! But other than that it was a pretty good list
What! Voltaire wasn't on the list!? He's the raining goth King.
+Aneira Silvermoon he shoulda been at least #2 is what I'm saying.
*reigning
He was though..
He wasn't part of the countdown, but they did have him in the beginning, sort of like an honorable mention, I suppose?
+Hadden Cat he's better than an honorable mention.
I hone6have not seen a better list before or since from them
Peter Steele deserves to be on the list for sure💔 I don't know if you're personally a fan but Type O negative has such amazing music and they deserve more attention💚 I love Pete
peter steel's will always live on in my heart. Stay negative
Stay negative? I'm confuse I though you like him
+Exo- Geno haha we love him. It's a band name pun😝
Ooh, definitely. I didn't think of him right away, but you're right!
+Tessa “Ye Whyze Owle” I know they aren't typically recognized as a goth band buuuut I've always considered them to be. They just have that general sound but they're unique at the same time lol
Ugh I LOVE The Cure. They're my #1 favorite band. I saw them for the first time a couple months ago and I cried.
I saw them June 23 at the PNC Music Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina and they were unbelievably good. Better than their recordings, if that is possible. Awesome first concert for me.
+Susanna Powers I WAS SO CLOSE TO GOING TO SEE THEM IN CHARLOTTE OMG
them being in North Carolina, let alone only an hour away from me, made me want to die ;^;
I'm glad you got to see them, though, because that's amazing ♡
I saw then at deer lake park earlier this year and I didn't know I was going till the day of, my mum if great 😂
saw them a couple weeks ago it made my life
My cousin interviewed Robert Smith for a magazine I was SO JEALOUS!!!
They did a great job of tackling goth from every angle, like you got literary goths, film goths, orthodox music goths and other macabre musical origins for damn near everyone who would describe themselves as goth on here
It's honestly like the ideal of a mrs mojo list, def better than some of their old drag ones
I think the cringe part was :
•Aliester Crowley cuz he is not a goth at all , he's a satanist occultist and psychopatch
•alice cooper cuz he's a shock rocker ,not goth at all , at least Marilyn Manson was semi industrial
•Amy Lee this one needs no explanation its obvious lol
I agree with every point. My exact same opinion.
Freya Scott I know right, I'm into Manson (as you can tell y my shirt in my profile pic :P) but he doesn't really make goth music.
Bizarre Is The New Black. Yeah but lots of goths listen to him
Trent isn't goth either.
plus, even though his music was more industrial he did enjoy goth bands (and a bit of fashion in the Broken era) taking lot's of influence from them. Part of the reason he was chosen to induct The Cure in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Both are industrial artists, not really goth.
I think Amy Lee and Trent Renzor were the "gateway" musicians into goth for a lot of people at the time - I was a punk teen, and Evanescene and NIN both had some of the music qualities I was into, while simultaneously exposing me to other elements.
I'd say Trent Renzor is more goth and more goth-influential than Marilyn Manson.
Yup, Trent Reznors music got me into Alternative music styles so he was definitely my gateway drug 😂
What you said about Marilyn Manson is so true. People feel ashamed of admitting that they like him, but I'm not. I love his music. I'm more ashamed of saying that I don't like Tim Burton, but there, I said it. Please don't hate me.
+Kai_Decadence Could it be that you're referring to Burton's former partner Helena Bonham Carter?
+Kai_Decadence I think you are thinking of Helena Bonham Carter?
I love older Burton but the new stuff is just not doing it for me AT ALL. Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands --- all fantastic! Also, I LURVE Marilyn Manson. Post punk has my heart but Manson is great!
I love MM I grew up listening to antichrist superstar all trough high school and even know. I like his new stuff and I'm excited to see him on August 14th 🤘🏻
Marilyn Manson is one of my favorite bands. Also I love Marilyn's character
How can you be soooo pretty?!?! Love the headpiece btw! Much love from Argentina ♥
Speak for yourself ^___^ ♥︎ much love back! xox
I had the biggest crush on Trent Reznor when I was younger lol .. he gets better looking with age that guy! 2 of the best concerts I've been to in the last few years was The Cure and Marilyn Manson. Have always been a huge fan of their music. So awesome!
I love Amy Lee. Shes more softer compared to the rest. She is definitely one of my icons
ME TOO!💜
Icon???? jaja icon is Patricia Morrison forever nooott Amy Lee......Amy is alternative noot goth not goth
+Corv Blackstairs usa el tuyo y no jodas .....si no sabes de gótico no hables
True! I love her so much
Amy Lee was one of icons when i was kid even though i was never goth, by the way can you please explain me what's with the capital letter on profile icons, i have been seen this all over the TH-cam coment section, i'm extremely curious....
I got chills when they showed the clip from Type O Negative. I love them so much
A detail that some seam to forget when seeking out accurate goth musicians, is how said musicians actually sound, as apposed to how they look.
^^^This^^^although, I like all those mentioned...
***** I possess one, already. As well as the gall to show my face, on the internet....
I swear I see you on almost every Goth youtubers channel :D
I love Depeche mode so much
I like goth culture but I do not dress or look goth but I would kinda like to be more goth
Mr. Vader you're a casual goth
I feel that
Slytherin #Slytherinforlife same
PS: your username is 🖤🖤🖤
Then do it. It's as simple as that.
I think that's true for all slytherins even those who are goth want to be more goth
I couldn't stop laughing at your reaction to Amy Lee 😂
Off topic a tad, but I would have actually loved to see Marilyn Manson play the role of the Joker in Suicide Squad. I feel like that would have been a perfect fit. Is that just me?
Oh my gosh! I thought that too! Y'know because he did that song with Avril Lavigne which was about Harley Quinn or something and I was like "He would make a great Joker tbh." ^^
that definitely would have been a wet dream hahahaha although who they picked looks pretty perfect for it on his own
Yeah, that is true. ^^
Agreed. He's an excellent actor, too.
I just saw Marilyn Manson in concert last night with Slipknot, and Of Mice &Men. And he was awesome
Haha at the poe part I couldn't help but laugh because of south park. God brilliant.
YOU MEAN NIGHT PAIN
I'M SORRY! Didn't mean to insult the original goth. NIGHT PAIN!
haha
Oh shit, the episodes with the Goth kids are probably my favorites. Especially the Goth vs Vampires one...per se.
+PeanutButterZombie00 "OMG NO WAYYYY" lmao ...love me some goth kids lol
Shocked Ian Curtis wasn't in the top 10😮
He was an honorable mention tho
I agree with everything but putting shock rockers in there. I don't think Trent Reznor is any less of a gothic icon than Marilyn Manson. Both of them are loved by a lot of goths, but don't make gothic music. They did a pretty good job though and obviously had done their homework.
Oh and I was really irked when they mentioned Amy Lee as an honorable mention. They were waaaaay off the mark with that one.
I'm only a minute in and my first thought was Edgar Allan Poe...I wonder if he's actually on here lmbo
Nope...I'm a few seconds more...I feel dumb
WAIT HE"S ON THERE YAY I WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!
they had tim burton im
so happy!!
Ciel Phantomhive CIEL! I love Black Butler.
Can we take a second of how much I love this channel? I am no where near goth or into its following but I love love love love this channel, great personality and I honestly have come to love the goth following and have learned a lot following you!
Cant forget about MrBlackDarkness666
hm...
lol
Lolololol
Oh my lord.
Lmao
"...aaaaand at #1, we have Edward Cullen!"
Bahahaha
Great video but why the surprise about Trent Rezner? Trent paved the way for Manson. Nobody knew who he even was till he opened for NIN!
Then again I might be a bit biased because I love classic goth and post punk :)
Rozz Williams should have been on the list.
This video made me happy :$
Hugs!
Good point, I guess there are a lot of iconic artists who could be in a list like this, but they might be slightly too obscure to register in the mainstream media probably.
Indeed !
I love how you have that red filled in on your waterline it blends in with your eyes so well and makes your eyes stand out and look like they're full and flooding or bit bloodshot.
Marilyn Manson is life I absolutely love him and his music
how could you or that list not mention Nick Cave?😱☠
Emily B i was wondering the same!!! :(
Caves influence ran far and wide, not only music and fashion(though an icon of both)with his arts poetry films novels etc. He was there, from the very beginning with"The birthday party" esp."bats", and came to be a founder of the genre, deserving of at least fifth place!
I can’t like this comment enough, spot on!
. . .and Blixa
Can you react to watch mojo"s top cartoon goth girls?
everyone likes at least one Marilyn Manson song
not me
talktal so you don't like "the beautiful people" or "Sweet dreams" or any other he has done before? Even though he isn't the original singer for "sweet dreams".
Lily Flavin no. was always just too hot topic for my taste.
penelope hamnett True
deep six!
mortisha should of been there or wednesday adam
Unless I'm also wrong, it's spelled Morticia.
They just did real people, instead of fictional characters, otherwise I'm sure either of them would have been included!
I think they said only real people in the original video.
Their not on the list because if you paid attention to the video they said only real life people are on the list and Wednesday Adams and Morticia are not Real life people but characters in t.v. shows and movies.
Elvira is not a real person either though...
Reznor is deffo a goth icon amongst the people I know. The Sisters and the Nephilim should have been on there a s well. As for Alice Cooper, don't take the piss!
I was saying from the start ROBERT SMITH SHOULD BE IN IT ROBERT SMITH ROBERT SMITH
Awesome crown, Friday!
I'm dissapointed that Voltaire didn't ultimately make the list... Amy Lee was in the honorable mentions, but not Voltaire?
That head dress is lovely.
I'm not a goth outside but my inner self is.
You have a new subscriber. Love love your positivity and how you carry yourself. Keep up the good awesome content.
Love from Jersey 💋
Alice Cooper isn't goth at alll, BUT, there's an obvious deathrock influence on him.
Ugh, neither is Manson. Although a couple of him albums do border into it.
Ian Curtis should have been much higher.
I feel Pete Steele should have been in place of Alice Cooper. Type O Negative, for me, is one of the top Goth Metal bands of all time.... and my favorite! At least Pete got mentioned 🙂
Even if he isn't, he could certainly be seen as an influence. Same ad Manson.
Elvira is love, Elvira is life.
I want to know her magical secrets for getting her boobs to sit like that hahaha :p
Fashion tape? Lots and lots of it?
+It's Black Friday maybe their fake?
I saw a really old interview with her once; it's a special bra that's more or less indestructible and pretty much the tata version of a chastity belt, LOL. I believe if memory serves, she said it was specially made and she doesn't wear it unless she's doing her Elvira look. That video also contained behind-the-scenes footage of her putting on her makeup, which took somewhere in the ballpark of 1-2 hours, ish. It used to be on YT, before they started taking everything down for copyright. My mom was a huge fan of hers in the 70s/80s and raised me as such
+It's Black Friday I know right?? She is amazing. What did you think of the short series "The Search for the Next Elvira?"
My favorite Marilyn Manson albums where from way back in the early 90s but even then his music was mostly referred to as industrial by my goth elders.
No the 69 eyes? or sisters of mercy? hmmm
How could Robert Smith not make the list. When I think of the culture he's the first face I think of.
Well, he did. He was number 1.
I'd say that that was one of the most respectful overviews of Goth, ever! I am pleasantly surprised!
"Elvira! Elvira! My heeeeearts on fiiire, for Elvira!"
Glam + Kraut + Psychedelic + Punk
I thouht the adams family were going to be on the list
Yos they were doing real people, not characters.
They’d be on a Fictional character list.
How about Christopher Lee (aka Count Dooku) he also played Dracula in several films. ☺ And for films I would nominate Bram Stokers Dracula with Gary Oldman from 1992.
My idols : Robert Smith and Siousxie Sioux🖤
Hi lovely, I've met siouxsie quite a few times and everytime she has been just gorgeous. Amazing woman x
I've seen Alice Cooper live where he did the Frankinstien's monster thing and he got be-headed in the end!! SO AWESOME!!
Does this mean no part three in Poland?
It's coming! 😊
It's Black Friday Okay 😁
i think you are very beautifu i love your clothes
YES ROBERT SMITH
just realized I love all these things in this video. I told my mom my goth phase would never end even though I'm too lazy to do my makeup and hair everyday like I used to when I was young
But Elvira IS a character lol Cassandra Peterson isn't goth in her daily life but anywho, the list was pretty good!~
I don't disagree with her being an icon btw just they said no characters just actual people right at the beginning lol
She is a real person, just with the Elvira split personality. lol
Elvira's not really a character so much as Cassandra's alter ego.
i think Amy Lee is closer to emo than goth
She's no where near emo. Emo stuff is more cringy, but goth is more artistic, awesome, and beautiful.
Blixa Bargeld for me probably not as well known though.
I can see it but I think he’s considered in that Industrial split.
2 appearances of Vincent Price and he wasnt part of the actual list!?!?!?!? That would of made me out him on there!
I didn't know this list existed until I saw you review it. This list was actually one of their more well-thought-out ones. I might've re-ordered some of them, but I think they were all good choices.
Trent Rezenor shouldve been on the list, he's a huge part of Industrial goth rock
If I made the same list, Peter Murphy and Siouxsie Sioux would have been at the top of the list. I feel like they didn't get the credit they deserved.
Wow, looking so gorgeous today! I love these darker red contacts. And of course that head piece is stunning.
oooooooooh how much I love the Cure
why is amy lee no? She was like my goth idol growing up
I know right, I love her
She isn't exactly goth. She leans more so on the line between Emo and Goth. Although, I do admit, I love her. Her voice is gorgeous.
Like, middle school 'goth' music lol.
shakur95 If you were in middle school in 2008 it was.
Trust me.
I found it shocking, too.
Cool woman nonetheless lol loved her when I was younger and still do
Cassandra Peterson doesn't go around looking like Elvira in her life, either. LOL
Saw the Cure this past June here in Denver. They struggled through the show as the altitude left them breathless. Was still worth the money spent. ❤️❤️
you should react to the south park episode Goth kids 3; Dawn of the posers!!??!
oh, so THAT'S how her name is pronounced "susie sue". I always read it as "sou swee... swu soo... she sells sea shells by the sea shore". I honestly was perplexed by her name.
lol same here
'Sioux' comes from the Native American tribe of the same name and is pronounced 'Sue', its just a clever play on words 😀
that's amazing! thanks for the information 😁 i love her even more now
"Oh Peter Murphy! Such a good start" hahaha gotta love yaaa goth queen!
Vampira was better than elvira tho... She was not just a character.
i have to disagree...they are the same as good!
Thank you for admitting to liking Marilyn Manson.
More and more he is a huge segway for people getting into goth
We need to be accepting of anything that is inspiring people to identify as goth, I mean fuck if someone told me they got into goth by die antwoord introducing them to counter culture and then falling down the dark rabbit hole I would be like "yeah makes sense"
Constant Chaos definitely agree! It’s so odd seeing a lot of goths acting like he wasn’t their gateway to the goth subculture
Talentless POS waste of space. He can't kill over soon enough.
I loooove The Cure! I recently just bought a shirt!! That makes me so happy that the lead singer is # 1!!!
