  • Govia Thameslink Railway Train Fleet/Rolling Stock. Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) is a train operating company in Great Britain which includes 4 brands of service, Gatwick Express (GX), Great Northern (GN), Southern (SN) and Thameslink (TL).
Gatwick Express operate services between London Victoria and Brighton via Gatwick Airport.
Great Northern operate services out of Moorgate on the Northern city line via Finsbury Park to Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage via the Hertford loop as well as services from London Kings Cross to Letchworth, Cambridge, Ely, Kings Lynn and Peterborough along the southern part of the east coast main line.
Southern operate metro services in south London out of London Victoria (via Clapham Junction) and London Bridge stations as well as from Watford Junction via the west London line. Southern also operate longer services out of London via East Croydon towards Gatwick Airport, Eastbourne, Hastings, Worthing, Horsham, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, Havant, Portsmouth and Southampton. Southern also operate East and West Coastway services from Southampton to Brighton and Brighton to Ore in addition to diesel services on the Marshlink to Ashford International and Uckfield.
Thameslink operate cross London services through the Thameslink core serving London St Pancras, Farringdon, City Thameslink, London Blackfriars and London Bridge. Services operate north on the Midland Main line to St Albans, Luton and Bedford with east coast main line services to Peterborough and Cambridge. Services in the south operate on shoter services to London destinations such as Sutton via Wimbledon/Carshalton as well as destinations including Rainham, Brighton, Gatwick Airport via Redhill and Horsham.
This video shows the current train fleet (May 2023) along with the future rolling stock and past rolling stock for this operator.
Gatwick Express operates just 1 type of train the class 387 which usually operate as 8 or 12 carriage services with 2+2 seating throughout. In the past class 442 Wessex Electrics trains have operated.
Great Northern operate class 387 Electrostar and class 717 Desiro City trains which both feature 2+2 seating. In the past class 365 Networker Express, class 313, class 317 and class 321 have operated.
Southern operate a fleet of class 377 Electrostar and class 171 Turbostar which feature a mix of 2+2 and 2+3 seating. In the past class 313, class 455 and additional class 171 Turbostar have operated.
Thameslink is operated entirely by 8 and 12 carriage fully walkthrough class 700 Desiro City trains which have 2+2 seating throughout in both standard and first class. In the past class 319, class 377 and class 387 Electrostar trains have operated.
Once East Midlands Railway receive a number of Southern class 171 Turbostar there will be few changes to the GTR train fleet as all their new trains have entered service. Great Northern may operate up to 30 additional EMU trains from May 2024 which it is currently looking into but these will not likely be new build trains.
The train fleet information is correct as of May 2023 and future train fleet dates are based for the planned introduction for passenger services. Past Train Fleet is based on when the current Govia Thameslink Railway franchise has been in operation.

All the GTR electric trains are now Electrostar or Desiro City trains with the only diesel being the 171 for Uckfield and Ashford International services. I do think there is little point in having Gatwick Express as its own brand now as the Gatwick terminating services run through to Brighton and the 387/2 are used on some Southern services anyway.

Awesome video information for GTR, can I ask when did Great Northern announce they wanted more 4 car trains to use from May 2024? And what routes are they going to go on and which class of trains are they looking to buy?

On April 25th Great Northern put out a tender for 21 to 30 x 4-car EMUs, specified for 20m coach length, end gangways and doors at thirds, capable of 100mph. Units would be required for operation from May 2024.
It’s unlikely a new fleet would be ordered for this, and the specifications suggest either the 350/2s or 379s would be accepted. This doesn’t necessarily mean anything will be accepted either, but it’s a good sign they’re looking at more capacity to possibly replace what’s been cut during the pandemic.

I have seen in this video that Southern is getting the 377/5s. I am not sure if that is going to happen? As it has been denied by other people who work with the rail industry?

The 377/5s to Southern are now looking less and less likely to happen and iirc there aren't actually any plans. It's just speculation but some of the 387s from Great Northern will be cascaded over to Southern in preparation for the 21-30 379s coming in -May- June 2024

All of GTR once had, or stil has, electrostars

They really need to electrify the Ore to Ashford line and Hurst Green to Uckfield line so that Southern can get rid of their diesel class 171 trains as this would remove diesels from London Bridge/East Croydon while also allowing decent diesel trains to move to other parts of the country. If they won't electrify these lines they really need alternate options like bi modes or batteries possibly even using Electrostar trains.

Great Northern should of inherited the Class 379s to be used on London King’s Cross-Cambridge, Peterborough, Cambridge North and Ely. Plus Southern to inherit the Class 377/5 from Southeastern and Class 387/3 from c2c to increase more extra capacity. And to be used on the West Coastway Line and East Coastway Line.
Which the Class 387/3 have now gone to Great Northern. And Gatwick Express to bring back the Class 387/2 that were on hire with GWR and Great Northern.

I wish Great Northern replaced their older trains to Peterborough and Cambridge/Kings Lynn with class 379 instead of class 387 as the class 379 are better for longer journeys. The class 387 could then move to Southern/Gatwick Express to make up for the loss of the class 313 and class 455 without having a much reduced timetable.
