Thanks Nick you made me laugh out loud when you said you think you’re the last person in the world to sort your paints!!!!! You’re probably not you know. It’s amazing what you end up doing when you reach a point of utter frustration and know you need to do something about it. It’s only a few years ago that I went down to the $2 dollar shop( I’m in Australia) and bought lots of plastic baskets that fit on the shelves I have and sorted the paints into the primaries then a few others for the odd ones. It’s great. Another thing I had to do for my body was jack the folding table I work on up onto bricks( or could havE used the wood blocks like you did but the bricks were on hand) so that my back and neck don’t suffer so much from bending down too far to paint or glue or whatever I’m doing. It has helped. The stepladder is a great idea. Thank you for the reminder that to work productively a certain amount of thinking needs to go into the how to improve your enjoyment and the outcome.

You’re adorable and I totally giggled because only an artist can understand how exciting it is to be organized with your paints!! 💖💖💖😂🌸🌸🌸

I have a caddy with coloured drawers, so it's real easy to find the paint colour I want. I also (hint hint) ALWAYS put the lid back on my paint tubes :D Wastage irks me no end.

I just LOVE your common sense creativity. It's so honest and you're so giving. If only I had a studio where I could let the paint drip on the floor!

Super smart ideas! I keep my paints in clear plastic bins that are on a shelf below one of my work tables. Reds and purples; yellows and oranges; blues and greens. On the shelf, I couldn't really see which colors were in which bin so I was constantly pulling one out....nope, wrong one....try this one. So I took your suggestion and put a big swatch of color on the end of each bin. Now I can see at a glance which is the yellow group, which is red, which is blue. Sounds so simple, but it saves time and doesn't disrupt my "flow" when I'm in a rhythm and looking for a certain color. Thanks!

Great tips Nick. I recently got a large 3 tier cart by rubbermaid, with smooth wheels and have laid out tubes on the top. I don't work on the scale you do but separate cool, warm and neutral colors. I was inspired by seeing pics of Cy Twombly's studio where each tube was laid out. I like how you addressed mixing colors on the canvas...in my 20's I had a lot more hours of watercolor painting under my belt than acrylic and I was taught to always mix colors on the paper and not the palette to keep them fresh, not muddy. So when I started in acrylic I just transferred that process. Recently I began to question my process with mixing acrylic on the canvas but I guess that is ok. Also a huge THANK YOU for your homemade hack of the stay wet palette, I am not wasting paint. Even in San Diego where it is so dry it stays for days. Personally I love tips from others on this topic.

One thing that has helped me is to have one bucket for paints that I need to use up (they are older), and ones that I want to use more. ;-) I just recently stared to do the buckets to organize my studio.

Got a good laugh over the colored paint buckets. I was already getting elderly when I noticed a rolling multi-drawer paint bureau with different colored drawers in an art catalogue. Flash bulbs went off in my brain! IF if had one, all the red paint could be in the RED drawer!!!! and so on. Imagine that! It was relatively cheap so I got it and what a heap of trash it was. The drawers immediately jumped from their tracks but I crammed all my various colors into their corresponding compartments anyway. Few items fit and many were never seen again. It still hangs out in my workroom but all the paint is again on the worktable One change has saved me-- A2L paint. I LOVE your paint for many reasons but a major one is I can find the right paint because they stand taller than the wretched tubes. I can SEE the color and pick it up. No more rummaging. Imagine that!!!!

Great tips, thanks Nick. I employ a little sturdy wheely cart with three shelves, for palette, brushes, paints and water. It allows me to move between canvases freely, instead of being stuck at a table.

I sort my tubes of acrylic paint by color in 3-tier rolling carts from Ikea and Michaels. If I'm working in blues/greens/purples, I just drag that cart closer to my easel. I cover my "mixing" table with 4ml plastic sheeting and squirt out paint so it's ready to go when I am. The mixing table is big enough for lots of paint and a bucket of water, but small enough to drag it next to whichever easel I'm working on.

I have to stay organized because I’m in a small space. I use in and out metal desk trays to keep paints in. They easily stack and save space as well as keep me from going cray cray looking for paints.. Love your idea of color bins to match color of paints. Thanks!

I LOVE your tips and your whole presentation of them! Thank you sooo much!! I color code everything and never thought to put paint in colored buckets!!! LOVE it. I like the ladder idea but i use a 3 tier rolling cart with paint in it and keep near the canvas... your bucket idea will fit on the top tier! Thank you

Well, I sort of don’t want to admit it, but I often paint with a brush in one hand and a tube of paint in the other. Someone told me that wasn’t the right way, but it works for me, so….
