Nah this is a bit they had been doing for years. He just over exaggerated the "what are you doin here?" Which got them laughing. The accents had been part if it from the beginning

1:27 the camera zooms over to Bill Hader's face for a exclaimed look, and Bill realizes that the camera is on him, and he tries to go for that surprised look, all the while trying to suppress his clearly unsurppressable laughter, which leads to an awkward expression, and then he realizes that he won't be able to keep a straight face, and just breaks down laughing. I live for these kind of things.
I love that the music stingers are so messed up at the end, just makes it so much funnier all of them standing there mugging for the camera in silence.

as a new yorker who had to live in CA for several years, where I honestly knew people who talked like this, these "Californian" sketches always fill my little black heart with endless mirth and joy. I don't think I've seen one yet where they all kept it together
Totalah. (I grew up down there too and agree completely. Live in NorCal now and still sometimes get made fun of for an accent I can barely even hear that I have. And I honestly can't think of how to give directions differently or why you'd need to!)
I remember when I first moved to LA asking someone for directions. He spent 20 minutes explaining in depth every turn on a 5 minute trip, and gave me 3 different alternative routes!! After living there 3 years, I started doing the same!!! :)
This is even funnier than the actual live one!!! I get Tim Conway and Harvey Korman flashbacks the way Fred Armisen and Bill Hader crack each other up! :)

Lorne once said to Bill (and probably the others) to have fun on stage. And the dress versions are more fun, they're more relaxed because they know it's not televised. It's just them and the live audience. :)

personally, i think this bit would have eternal staying power as a nearly flawless classic - not just for snl but american sketch comedy in general, if they would have left it alone as a one-off and never revisited the idea. obviously in no world would they have NOT expanded on it, but maybe that's exactly what's wrong with america's comedic sensibility in the first place
