    that awkward moment when you go into the drops for the final 30m only to take a mouthful of stem

  • @acruzp
    @acruzp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    those 50g at the bars could have been gained from a lightweight stem... and you'd still have drops. That's really my only gripe here, awesome build.

  • @ben4373

    You can definitely get lighter stems without sacrificing stiffness. And why not gold cabling to match the chain? Otherwise nicely done.

    Funny and most don't realize that if you are using just RD, FD, and Shifters from a groupset, 9150 Di2 is actually 20 grams lighter than Sram eTap. Even with the extra cables, junction boxes and battery, Di2 is lighter.

    I'd love to see a video comparing power/time of this 4.8 kg bike to a typical UCI 6.8 kg bike. Not familiar with hill climbs but Google tells me that most are 600-800 yards (with a few longer ones) with winning times mostly in the 3 minute range. Curious to see if this 2kg weight savings has any noticeable time saving for these shorter climbs.

    • @mattsoutherden
      @mattsoutherden 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Rough example. A 65Kg rider putting out 550W in the Bec hill climb (~600m @ 13%) would save about 3 seconds by shedding 2Kg.

    Take links out of the chain that you don't need, saw off the seatpost so it only just sticks into the frame, take the spacers off the headtube, headset cap, internals and bar tape can come off too. Chop bars closer to hoods and ditch computer you might be looking at 4kg.

    • @karlstrugnell1001
      @karlstrugnell1001 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Henry Cash seat post has to go below the joints of the tubes by inch or so at least or ypull snap the frame and the post

    These paint weight claims are pretty ridiculous. If you ask Frank Hoste, who is a highly respected frame painter, it doesn’t add these amounts of weight. Also a canyon ultimate cf EVO frame would have been lighter and more aero. But I can clearly see you went the full Phil Gaimon route

      Sram etap requires both levers to shift the rear derailleur. one goes up and one goes down. pressing both at once activates the front mech.

    • @ofahlstrom
      @ofahlstrom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mechanical Red with the gear lever and internals stripped from the left hand shifter would have been a more interesting (and probably lighter) alternative. eTap is a cool system though and probably lends itself to more positive shifting when climbing out of the saddle.

  • @djconnel
    @djconnel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work! However you've still got to get back down the hill afterwards and I'm not sure the Pista tires will survive a serious stop. Cronos, if you can find them, should be the better choice. Al cassettes are less durable but cheaper and lighter, and who needs durability on Hillclimbs? DuPont cables are lighter than steel. I prefer bar drops just in case but that's just me. I love the 1x11 Red Etap. Would be tempted to go to oversized aftermarket pulleys.

  • @bebopalooblog2877
    @bebopalooblog2877 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Personally, I'd say the whole frame geometry should be altered to move the seat and everything else forward and more attention should be paid to optimizing crank-arm length for the individual rider. Essentially what you're doing when you lift your ass out of the seat should be the more or less default riding position - almost like a recumbent bike on your stomach, without actually resting upon your diaphragm, of course. Tons of energy is wasted controlling the bike and keeping your trunk stiff in a climb and you can no longer pull effectively off the bars if they are not in the right position. Greater mechanical advantage is more effectively achieved without a loss of speed by making the crank longer than by making the front sprocket smaller - up to a point, of course. We aren't talking about crank rpms per minute here - we're trying to get up a hill as quickly as possible, largely using gravity and the inertia of our own body mass to do it. (In physics terms, mass is inertia, but so what). By far the most significant mass is not the 15lb bicycle but our own 150lb+ body mass and gravity is clearly not going to get us up that hill on its own. It's on the other team. So we want our weight right over the pedal and we want to pull off the bars without wasting energy holding ourselves in position or rocking the bike back and forth and we want the maximum mechanical advantage over the crank without losing forward speed by reducing the gear ratio. The bike should be longer, the seat tube vertical or even canted forward and the crank arm should be as long as possible without your toes hitting the front wheel. Moreover, as momentum isn't really a thing on a steep climb, the wheels should probably be smaller. The entire geometry should be different. Weight and stiffness are less important considerations. Just my two cents. I lived on a hill. A steady 3km grade followed by a 300m get-off-your-ass pump. Did it twice a day without breaking a sweat - when I was 17 and 63 kg. I used to practice trying to do it in top gear with no hands in toe-clips. Never quite made it of course - but one hand on the stem was a doddle. I was lucky to have this weird steel Japanese bike with a near-vertical seat tube. Squirrely AF, but easily kept pace with my buddy who had a top-of-the-production-line titanium-alloy CCM prototype you could almost lift with your tongue and was an avid skier who pounded moguls and could push 700lb reps with his legs as well as ride backwards on the bars. All other things being equal, geometry makes the biggest difference, not weight.

    I’m enjoying the bike so far th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

    Could’ve saved even more weight by getting the dreimal out and cutting out the shifters

    Why not use sram red mechanical? Isnt it lighter than etap?

    • @ArtyYooo
      @ArtyYooo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      because then you have to factor in wires, housing, and a slightly heavier d/r

      Arthur I'm surprised one wire and housing could weigh more than the claimed weight advantage of 74g in favour of the mechanical..... having said that, it does sound close enough to the same weight, so if the money is there for ETap, then why not.

      I would say the weight would be pretty similar
