    Another artist who works very well with resin and alcohol ink is Myriams Nature on TH-cam. She does lots of experiments and shows how to fix problems too. I very much enjoy your channel! As I understand it, white sinks easier in thin and in warmed resins, and using lots of alcohol in willcause the wrinkle effect on the surface, but it's easy to cover with a dome. You can dome right on the surface without sanding, too, as I've heard. Saves some work!

    You might try filling the petri dish half way full, add ur colors, you can use a stick to make swirls if you like, then wait about 4 hours, then add the remaining resin. add glitter if you like, that way you will make it more dimentional.

    I make coasters with this mold all the time. I have found that when using a casting resin the inks blends into the clear like crazy. A medium viscosity works the best. I only put 60 ml in each and once its cured and removed from the molds I use a topcoating resin that will mound on the "top" where the lip is. I use aboul 15mls to do this. Eliminates the lip and gives it depth. That way you can revese them. I call them my reversable coasters. If you would like to see pictures let me know. The more layers of color, white, same color, more white the more you will see the little "growths" as the white pulls the color down. Love what you are doing here.

    Do love the resin pours. I went from resin/epoxy to acrylic, so I agree with others that have said, they go hand in hand. Beautiful colors, pastel or not! Adhesion causes the meniscus effect. The concave look of water in your measuring cup. When the mold is not filled, there is room up the side for that adhesion to pull the epoxy up the side. That is why that lip is so thin, is literally formed in the molecular level.

    I know this video is 2 years old but in it you mentioned yellowing of the resin, I’m sure by now you have been told this but if not……. When you’re mixing your resin up add a drop of blue alcohol ink and it helps cancel the yellow out. I have not noticed a difference in the results with what shade of blue. I’ve used all the shades of blue I have and they have all done the same so far.
    I love your work by the way!

    Very cool, but yes you have to fill the molds up all the way if you don't want the lip. It's easy to sand off, but then you need a super high powered buffer to get out the scratches. I'd try next time to put all your ink first then the activation

  • @aandrews9141
    @aandrews9141 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have had some amazing results with your Resin venture!!! I am loving them all!!! I have been wanting to start using resin myself, and I have been sticking up on supplies for quite some time now... still a little scared to take the plunge tho lol. I have done lots of research in preparation to begin, and a couple of things stood out to me here that may be of help to you in what you were wondering!!!... I have seen it warned in many places that ALL Resin will start to yellow if it isn't used within a certain amount of time after it has manufactured. Even the ones advertised as crystal clear will eventually no longer be crystal clear if not used within the indicated time frame, regardless of if it has ever been opened yet or not... and it does effect the colors and outcomes of your work when this takes place. It is the hardener part of the resin that turns. So there is a chance that the product you received had been shelved for too long, which caused it to have the yellow tinted tinged look to it, which would effect the outcome of your colors as well. Also, even fresh products that start out looking crystal clear can change as they cure if they do not have UV Stabalizer in them!!! But apparently not only that alone will stop a finished piece from yellowing over time. There is something else needed to help ensure the clarity of your finished product staying clear as time goes on... it is called HALS stands for Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer. Not all Resin is created equal or safe to use for Art Work. Here is a good article from ArtResin that explains the yellowing, but there are others out there that go further in depth about how they can yellow even if not opened, and give suggested times to use various products as well... www.artresin.com/blogs/artresin/41958017-why-do-some-brands-of-epoxy-resin-turn-yellow
    The other thing was the lip you were talking about after you pulled your piece from the mold. Some products are not self-leveling... and the one used here may not be. From what I have found, you may still run into issues even if you use self-leveling even if using a product made to do so, and then it would be due to other circumstances like the mold you use, or an uneven work surface, or temperatures, etc..
    One of the reasons I have been scared to work with it, is because so many factors go into getting it just right!?! I would hate to mess up something that I pass on to someone else... so it scares me a little bit. I just wanted you to know that you did nothing wrong in using the torch on your Resin... it is more than likely that it was just the product itself already having a yellow tint to it.
    Thank You for sharing all these beautiful outcomes you have had. I personally even like these here!!! 💖💖💖

    • @PhoenixWA80
      @PhoenixWA80 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol! I think you may have researched yourself to a point of overwhelming. It is a lot of fun and it is addictive.
      You are absolutely correct about the yellowing on the shelf. But if you are adding tints like mica powders or opaque colorants you won't have a problem with that. And yes, even UV resistant resin will yellow in time with UV exposure, but the best will take years.
      The thing that will go wrong with resin is primarily not measuring accurately, but even still there is a little leeway. I recommend a 1:1 ratio for beginners, but pay attention to whether it is one to one by volume or by weight. It does make a difference. Some can be both but some resins will be specific.
      The rule of thumb with alcohol inks and acrylic colorants (yes even acrylic paints!) is less than 10%. Especially anything waterbased!!! Micas are very forgiving and resin tints are forgiving on the ratios but alcohol and water based stay on the minimal side until you get familiar with your resin and additives.
      Finally, for a beginner I really recommend Michaels Alumilite brand Clear Cast resin, and here's why.... Michaels let's you use coupons on the resin kits. So that $20 investment in your first batch of resin with a 50% off coupon is now a $10 toe in the pond.
      Ohh! One last pitfall... my last pour I had my water bath too hot and the resin kicked in the cup while I was mixing other colors. Meaning, I had the resin too warm and it drastically sped the curing. I was also working with a larger batch than usual (trying to rush the process) so that was all on me. Start small, start cheap and have fun!!

    The parts that are not shiny is the ink that is on top. I would add a thin layer of resin BEFORE you take them out of the mold after they have cured. If you take them out of the mold first then put them back in the mold to dome, you run the risk of resin seeping down the sides inside the mold. I always dome first after they have cured and before demolding
