- Note: Click "Show More" for lyrics. Pilot was a rock musical group, formed during 1973 in Edinburgh, Scotland by the former Bay City Rollers members, David Paton and Billy Lyall. "Magic" was the first hit single for the group. It was written by Paton for their debut album. It charted most successfully in Canada, where it reached #1, topping the RPM national singles chart on 19 July 1975, and received a gold certification. It climbed as far as #11 on the UK Singles Chart and reached #5 during the summer of 1975 in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100.
Lyrics:
Magic (D. Paton / A. Parsons / EMI)
Ho, ho, ho
It's magic, you know
Never believe it's not so
It's magic, you know
Never believe, it's not so
Never been awake
Never seen a day break
Leaning on my pillow in the morning
Lazy day in bed
Music in my head
Crazy music playing in the morning light
Ho, ho, ho
It's magic, you know
Never believe it's not so
It's magic, you know
Never believe, it's not so
I love my sunny day
Dream of far away
Dreaming on my pillow in the morning
Never been awake
Never seen a day break
Leaning on my pillow in the morning light
Ho, ho, ho
It's magic, you know
Never believe it's not so
It's magic, you know
Never believe, it's not so
[Musical Interlude]
Ho, ho, ho
It's magic, you know
Never believe it's not so
It's magic, you know
Never believe, it's not so
RIP Ian Bairnson (guitar). Passed away this week 7-4-23. Dementia such a cruel thing to happen to such a talented guy. His list of session playing is legendary.
Most people will have his guitar playing in their mind…Wuthering Heights, yes that’s him. If I fellas got a twin neck, you know he’s serious.
Awwww damn that’s sad :(
RIP King.
7-4-23??? Did you mean 4-4 or 5-4?
So sad. RIP
A song that is the 70's in sound.
It was a magical time

Would love to hear a song like this on the radio. Even the pop songs these days are poorly-written slop for tweens.

This song has literally been stuck in my head for years. This is the first time i've found it!!!
Yeah, for the first 10 years since first heard this in 1975, I thought the title was "Music in My Head", and usually no one knew what song I was talking about when I said it.
(For you youngsters, The Internet / WorldWideWeb didn't start until around 1995, we often had to call the FM radio station (on land lines) and ask what the name of the song was, or the band's name, etc. Half the time when I called, they didn't know what I was talking about....)

crazy music playing in the morning and night I take it.
10 years old when this first came out. Love it as much today as I did back then in the summer of 1975, 49 years ago. My goodness, where has the time gone. Seems but a few blinks of the eye! Wow.
I dedicate this song to my high school love who died three days ago. He used to wait for me in front of our school listening to this song while I was approaching.

I've always loved this song. I remember being on vacation with my family in 1975...I was 12 years old. This song was virtually at it's peak, and as we drove across the country changing stations every hundred miles or so, we'd hear this song over and over. It never got old.

Agree ... both bass & guitar players are good but I find it interesting to see the guitarist adjusting the controls on his guitar when it's not plugged in.

That guitarist is Ian Bairnson, who went on to be the guitarist for The Alan Parsons Project, Paton also was with the APP.
@@edlawn5481 Yep , Paton from Lothian and Bairnson from the Hebrides. Solid Scottish musicians. ! Paton's bass playing in particular is an understated treasure.
Yeah, I love the bass, the guitar solo, the lyrics (an ode to sleeping), and the violin at the end!
This song touches me on a deep level. Love 70s rock
I'm still listening in 2022; this is one of the earliest songs I can recall hearing on the radio; it is unforgettable, especially the hook. Ooh, ooh, ooh its magic!

Ian Bairnson. Probably the most underrated guitarist of his time. Always played exactly what was required for the song. Always had a great tone.
Sadly passed last weekend.

I just remember my mom driving us to swimming lessons in the summer of '75 and hearing this song constantly on AM radio.
good memories :)
A question, what was the difference between FM and AM radio?
Double Step Castillo
In the early 70's most cars didn't have FM radio. The car was a 70 Chevy Caprice, only had AM radio in it (until I added an FM converter when I was 16). Is that what you meant?
Depends on what differences you are talking about. Electronically or musically. Since this is a music video, then the differences between AM and FM are their formats. AM radio was the mainstay for many decades. Rock radio stations on AM radio usually had to adhere to a Top 40 format, with songs having to clock in at around 3 minutes. Many songs that were longer than that were shaved down by the record companies in order to get their songs on AM radio. When FM radio came around in the late '60's/early '70s, FM radio didn't play by these rules. They would play songs longer than three minutes, as well as play not only the hit songs AM radio did, but play them in their entirety, with FM radio playing album cuts that many people never heard of. Led Zeppelin is one such benefactor of FM radio. Most of their songs are well over the three minute mark. Many people probably wouldn't have heard of Stairway to Heaven if FM radio didn't exist.
+Andrew Blythe If you havent seen it the movie FM explores this era. Its perfect
THIS IS MUSIC.

This song, and the sprit of "76" song Afternoon Delight really brings back great memories, when I was ,14yrs old working in my parents grocery store, playing street football with all of my friends!!
It was awesome...summers as a teen in the mid 70's....I was doing the same in Montebello CA.... oh how I wish I could go back....
I agree with the memories of this song being played. My friends and I also played street football rode our bikes played marbles spinning tops and even hide n go seek in the dark in our neighborhood.. What a life.

those were the fucking days my friend. "CARRRRRR"
I have an entire Spotify playlist of those very tunes, all in the frame 1975-1976. For when I need to feel like I did at 12 years...carefree and innocent.
I remember when the song came out. It was everwhere. In the parks schools, stores, everyone was playing it over and over.
Years later, it's still a good song.

This takes me back to after my mom died and I was living in the Children's Home in Oberlin. This was always on the radio...... So bittersweet for me........ Soon it will once again be the anniversary of my mothers death. You will never understand how hard it is for a young child to lose their protector, their mother and how even a lifetime never takes away the pain
I'm sorry for your loss.

That's a loss that's incomprehensible to the rest of us. So sorry.
I'm so sorry. My mother died when I was 11...in my fifties now, the anniversary of her death was Mother's Day this year. The pain is still there, the final moments still rush back. I can't know your pain, but I know the pain has affected me all of my life as well.

Such great memories. I was a kid when this came out. I wish I could go back. It was a better time, an easier time. Everything has gotten much more complicated, and the world is going to hell in a hand basket.
your right, every where u go theres security, cops put druggies @ drunks in jail instead of trying to get them help
Plus all of the cancerous movements.
Not trying to squash your childhood, but you thought it was an easier time because you didn't have to worry about bills, voting, children (if you have any), money, ect. But, the 70's was scary because of the Manson family, Zodiac killer, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, ect. There were also great things like Star Wars, Sex Pistols, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, ect. It's all a matter of perspective. Your parents didn't tell you the bad things because they wanted you to be happy and feeling safe. Anyone can say the same thing you did about any decade. I'm putting things in perspective and not trying to be annoying.
Well, I didn't grow up in the US, so we didn't really worry about all of these serial killers. We did have the RAF which randomly killed a few people. But nothing like in the states. And I also can't agree on great things like Star Wars, Sex Pstols, etc Not my cup of tea at all. Anyway, it does't matter why I miss my childhood, and a have fond memories, I just do.
The Manson family wasn't active in the 70s. The murders they were known for were in 1969. Also, Bundy was more active in the 1980s, but let's face it, there have been serial killers in every decade.

I was 8 years old in 1975 and had two teenage brothers. The music that they played (this song amongst them) had an indelible and profound effect in my life. So much so...that now, at the ripe old age of 55, this song makes me feel an absence for my youth. And yet I feel greatful. This music is like art for my ears...it will forever paint colors in my life.

Brings back my childhood at the local park in the summertime, alone...at 8 years old. The '70s still had an element of trust in neighbors and strangers...the world is so different, maybe for the best, but still sad.

The world is horrible now.

Every time I hear this song it brings me back to the essence of that summer. Lots of great music in 75. A time when America was free
Free, indeed. A time before the far-right QAnon fascists took over the GOP and tried to destroy our democracy. They once claimed to be Christian and pro-life. Now they kill 600,000+ Americans with the MAGA-virus, refuse vaccines, spread a plague, support a lying, self-admitted sexual predator and want to burn books and cancel free speech. Sad.

This song so exudes 1970s appeal, and I love it. Absolutely love it.
Hermosa música, me encanta.♥️🇵🇪
Alguien la escucha en pleno 2023?🇵🇪♥️
Yo de acá de Lima , escuchando estos temasos
There is something supremely likeable about the lead singer. I would love to hang out with him and listen to his stories.
David seems genuine and really looks like he's having fun. He's flirting with the camera too!
@@LarryLeeMoniz ,
Yes, he is, definitely, flirting with the camera. He's gorgeous 😁❤️
2:38 when that dude looks at the camera I felt his eyes looking into my soul
That just made me extremely paranoid.
The look with his mouth open says it all...
I thought I'm the only one😂😂
... aka Muskrat love.

I've been looking for this song for ages and now I'm here thank God

This song never gets old it still rocks
Legend song :'(
yup
Do not cry be happy about it :D
Born in 2004, I just want to feel how it was to live earlier in life.
Allopmaster there were no airbags or helmet laws or microwave ovens. McDonald’s hamburgers were better than present day in-n-out. Music was vinyl only. Hard to imagine I know.
Wow
Awesome memories when I was 6, in the summer of '75. This was on the radio at my friends house, just before we went to watch Scooby Doo:) Love my childhood growing up in Lompoc, Ca.
1975.. My favorite year, and this was my favorite song.
God I love this song. So many great memories. Such a special time. :)
I can see why
A Masterpiece without a dout!!! This tune never gets old!
present day rock is nothing compared to how people rocked in the 70's and 80's. I would love to have a time machine.
David Paton on bass and vocals -- in 1995 in the middle of a tour Elton John's bassist was hit by a car and seriously injured -- with virtually no notice David Paton flew to the USA and within days was playing bass in the Elton John Band -- the shows were two hours and forty five minutes long and David learned all those songs over night and stepped in and delivered flawless bass guitar and backing vocals -- now you have to be an amazing musician and performer to do what David did for that 1995 EJ tour -- i was at one of the shows at Madison Square Garden -- and Elton told us this story -- incredible and i have never forgotten it and have the highest respect for David Paton, I hope he is happy healthy and well
Thanks Justin. A great anecdote & snippet of trivia that I wasn’t aware of. Clearly a bassist of distinction.
I’m a huge fan of Elt, first saw him at one of his ‘Xmas at the Odeon’ gigs in ‘82, was at the FA Cup Final in ‘84 (he was then Chairman of Watford FC) & seen him many times since - looking forward to seeing him in Barcelona this May, too.
David also played with the Alan Parsons Project for years with Ian. Both were/are prolific session musicians.
Thank you Justin. I’m just reading through the comments and you jogged my memory of my time with Elton. My first gig with him was Live Aid, the first song I recorded with him was Nikita. I’m so happy to read all the positive thoughts and happy memories people have of Magic. Thank you all
Can this be on Guardians of the galaxy 3???
andrey pabalate it would really work there
Probably turn up in Awesome Mix # 3, if it isn't already out. :)

This song just brought me back to 1975....I just found a time machine
Brian Glade this song reminds me of when the roosters won the nrl grand final in 1975.
Roller Skating at the roller rink! Bell bottoms and polyester or printed shirts... Recording the radio with tapedeck and watching Midnight Special & Don Kirsner's Rock Concert!
Don't forget Night Flight.
Got this on loop for last 72 hours...
THANKS
Boy do I remember this tune. Summer of 1975. I was going into the 10th grade.
yep, going into 9th :)
Damn the good ol' days in which I was not alive.
I was going into the 11th grade that year. Our whole lives were ahead of us and we didn’t even realize all that was to come. Wow, where have the years gone?

I was a teenager when magic came out I loved it then and I loved it now you all had so much respect for one another and you play your music so well together and was never anybody off key I really love you music I've learned a lot of songs and poems didn't get to up too far but I'm really glad that I got this cell phone from my daughter-in-law and I've able to play your song as often as I like I'm disabled and I'm not able to get out to try to find to buy a CD but I absolutely love your song and I play it I plan to play it a lot and makes me feel good and it brings me back to the good old days God bless and amen from Maine
This song reminds me of the days we spent trading and reading comics in the summer....they played this tune endlessly.

You're a good person with a great taste in music. Hope you've had a great life man. I see myself in the future listening to this song remembering now. Showing my kids this song would make me tear up.
I miss WLS!
Super 'CFL, too!
@chuck dillon CKLW was from Windsor?
@chuck dillon I grew up in Chicago, but on good nights, I could get AM stations from all over North America, even down to Cuba a couple of times.
