Some points of clarification - you could point all of your solar panels north for long wipes and leave them as long as the charging requirements of your batteries could take the hit. Meaning, it will depend on the active usage of the battery, and, therefore, charge requirement to meet the 80% charging efficiency.
You could also choose to add south-facing solar panels to help make up the difference.
The most cost effective and efficient way is to simply turn them around when needed. The choice is, of course, yours.

Fantastic vid! One thing not covered (that you might need to know) is that having panels facing ne/nw or even nne/nnw gives you the same power but for more of the day. Not a big deal most of the time but having a small base with only 2 panels, getting one that turns on early in the day and one that runs later into the day greatly extends your battery charging time while reducing your run everything off the battery time. And that is a way to set up a day night switch as well.

    Fantastic explanation.
If I were a professor, you'd get an A on your presentation.
Also, foreveryone wanting "easy mode", just point them all north and treat them as 14V max output.
    Need 100V?
8 of them pointed north gives you 112V no matter what month you're in.

Great content. appreciate your hard work making the vids. How do you make the signs in your bases? Very cool

      hey thanks!
I make the sign content in Snappa based on specific rust sign/picture frame pixel sizes, then paste it in-game using the Sign Artist plugin on my server

You’ve done your homework for sure.
You mentioned new system? Is this a recent thing? My understanding of the solar panel direction is dependent on your geolocation on the map.
Say one is housed on the northern side of the map, then majority of the wipe would need to face south. Because the sun slowly moves south as the wipe progresses. (rate of movement speeds up or slows depending on the wipe duration)
Though maybe this is just grandpa rambling on about “how things used to be”.
    Love the content.

Yeah so it used to be that solar panels needed to be placed pointing to the center of the map/sky dome.
Per Facepunch in the June 2022 update, "Fixed solar panels pointing to the sun's location in the server's central sky dome instead of the sun's true direction. Light angle on solar panels now always matches visible sun position"
They now point to where the sun actually is, and because there are seasons, it moves. The cool thing about the update is that it no longer matters where you are on the map. Everyone is going to either point North or South based on the parameters I gave in the video.

As for me, I normally place my bases on the Northern end of the map or somewhere where there is a substantial Northern exposure. And as I usually play on weekly/biweekly wipe servers I always place then facing North. Haven't tried hiding them because in most raids they are ignored as players are going for the TC.
I suppose one offline raid strategy for would be to take out any solar panels and windmills and come back later for a deeper raid hoping the batteries have all run dry. Of course if they have any type of raid notification, the base owners would log back in ASAP and repair any damage before you could do any second raids.

I think the main reason you'd want to hide them is so that raiders won't know you have electricity running in your base. People sometimes will leave a more primitive looking base alone. The other thing is if you have an inside turret they also won't be expecting it. Not sure if it is worth the trouble, but that was my thought, rather than worrying about them being destroyed or stolen.

@@sa9245 Only thing to say there is if the turrets are on , they could possible hear them from the outside. But then you can place heat detectors that activate them when they are exposed. ;)

My best takeaway from this is just add an extra 25% worth to compensate for the off months 🤣 I'm too lazy to keep swapping them around.
