'La Chasse-Galerie' (1892) by Honore Beaugrand
    Narration by Louis-Simon:

    La Chasse-Galerie
"This narrative is founded on a popular superstition dating back to the days of the coureurs des bois, under the French regime, and perpetuated among the voyageurs in the Canadian Northwest. The shantymen of a later date have taken up the tradition, and it is in the French settlements, bordering the St. Lawrence River, that the legends of la chasse-galerie are specially well known at the present time. The writer has met many an old voyageur who affirmed most positively that he had seen bark canoes traveling in mid-air, full of men paddling and singing away, under the protection of Beelzebub, on their way from the timber camps of the Ottawa to pay a flying visit to their sweethearts at home."

Another good show! That folktale is best, told around the campfire at night, in the deep woods...!

From Bayou Lafourche in Louisiana; this really felt familiar. With my extremely limited grasp of French, I was able to understand much of the French phrases almost by "feel" (a lot like the Cajun French phrases here). Having for so long associated rugged French pioneers in the New World with the hot and humid climate of south Louisiana, its really cool hearing folktales of essentially the same people but up in the frigid woods of the North.
Also, is it just me, or does the narrator's accent also remind you of the accents of a lot of Scandinavians who speak English?

It's funny... Growing up French Canadian in Québec, I feel the same way about French settlers in Louisiana... so far geographically, but so close as far as cultural memory... cousins..
