I love this - seeing Rick almost *blush* when Adam starts to sing Girl on a Motorbike with him playing along - reminds me we never lose that feeling for music we really love.
Knowing how much this band means to Rick, couldn’t help but smile through this whole video - especially when they’re playing together. I know the feeling, got to play guitar with a few of my guitar heroes. Such a special occasion. Thank you for sharing.
Ricks enthusiasm is all of us getting to play along to our favourite songs, but even more so when it’s the actual artist, it’s infectious and I’m here for it!
My eyes scanned over the thumbnail to this video and I thought "Hang on. Is that Adam Franklin? " And it was. And then they go and play 'Girl On a Motorbike'. Big smile. That really is a special kind of satisfying.
I am embarrassed to admit, I have never listened to Swervedriver before seeing this video. But I am now exploring their music. Thanks for opening my ears to this.
One of the most underrated bands of the 90’s…and beyond. Unbelievably loud live. Mezcal Head never left my CD player for well over a year. Awesome band. Thanks Rick.
Not matter whether it's Swervedriver, Toshak Highway or A.F. and the Bolts of Melody, there is something MAGICAL about Adam's chords, they draw me in like no music from other bands/artist, what a legend!
Adam if you are looking comments I absolutely love your approach to playing in open tuning very much reminds me of Phil Keaggy and his use of open tunings, not sure if he was ever an inspiration to you. Like Rick I would have never guessed you dropped to F on the low string. I have always thought it was GCDGCD and you were somehow stretching to grab that note, using F is far more economical and smart knowing you would have to play this live. A lot of players think open tunings are lazy but when I hear your playing and see you demonstrating it in this video it’s anything but lazy, very purposeful chord structure and just awesome to hear. Thank you for the decades of amazing music. 🤘
Never heard this before but it's super cool! I also really like how it's so hard to figure out due to the tuning but also simplistic at the same time. As he explains the parts he begins by "its really just this...". Awesome!
I had lost Swervedriver out of my sights since the late 90's but thankfully rediscovered them a few months back in one of Rick's vids. Such an amazing band. It even made me go back and listen to another favourite band from the period, Sugar. The early to mid 90s, amazing indeed.
Long time Swervedriver fan. I discovered them in ‘93 like many others. I totally get why Rick is having all the feels here. It’s amazing music and the stunning simplicity of how Adam wrote it all is kind of cathartic. Going to be playing Duel all weekend now!
Thanks for coming on Adam with Rick (when Rick has someone on, or talks about it, I know it is quality). I was not familiar with your band (Sorry, I am about a thousand years old--67 soon--and was a 60's and 70's music fan) and had lost faith in music because of the domination of hip-hop and digitized everything. So it was a real pleasure to hear a band who can play their instruments, sing, compose. Melodies! Harmonies! Dissonance! Creativity! Gee, what a radical idea! But I digress. I will be seeking out your music.
Holy smokes! I have heard Rick mention this band before, but I have never checked out their music. This stuff is absolutely fantastic and I will be giving it a listen this weekend. Rick Beato strikes again!
Swervedriver is a new one for me. But Rick, you know to never let someone tell you you can't play something. I remember years ago being at an open mic and there was a singer looking for someone to play 'The Rain Song' by Zeppelin. I'd worked up a single guitar, concert-tuned version years earlier, so we played The Rain Song and the house lost their minds. A friend of mine, also a guitar player, walked up to me afterwards and told that my version was 'close enough to fool the masses', which was the whole point. Great video!
I love Swervedriver just as Rick does and he is the only youtuber who I've ever seen paying tribute to them. On the other hand, I believe this only happens because they are the only shoegazing band who are borderline grunge. I wish Rick could bring more british bands from that scene to the mix, like Ride, but it's easy to see watching his videos it's not his style, which is a shame
Indeed. I don't know why swervies aren't talked about that much. Would have liked to hear some breakdowns tracks from Raise, which is my favourite, but ohh well. Rick should get Toni Halliday & Alan Moulder on - 2 for 1!
Oh man, the part the two of you playing together was awesome! Straight out of some "unplugged" session. Love when band / musicians makes simple great sounding songs, no "show-off", just simple chords and sprinkle of magic.
Mezcal Head was so well produced that it still sounds out. The mix is just so in your face and punchy. It sounds so powerful. Alan Moulder and the lads produced such a masterpiece. Rick, hearing you and Adam play "Girl on a Motorbike" together gave me total gooseflesh...holy crap!
WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!! Swervedriver is recording a New Album!???!! 😳 I've loved Swervedriver since I saw them at a tiny club in NYC in 1992. My personal favorite 3 songs are, "English Subtitles", "Up From the Sea", and of course, "Blowin' Cool"!
Love these guys. I was in a studio in 92 and the guitars just weren't coming together, so I gave the Rave Down EP to the other guitarist and said have a listen, what's "that"? He came back the next day and said "it's not what's there, it's what's not - absence of reverb". So we pulled back all the reverb, multitracked the guitars, and did all the bite and growl through a JTM-50 and a Mesa II. Perfect! It's a real buzz to hear that they're recording again. Pers fave: She's Beside Herself.
I heard this band for the first time when I played Road Rash, and I loved it, I still listen to it today, one of my favorite bands, I'm from Brazil, hugs to everyone!
I still listen to Swervedriver and it was just yesterday that I was. I have so many favorite songs. But the one that stands out for me is. You never lose that feeling. So many great songs across their catalog. I even purchased vinyl from Adam of his projects aside from Swervedriver. Thank you Rick and Thank you Adam for everything. ✌️
This is the best channel on TH-cam. I'm so close to only watching beato and forgetting the rest of YT for eternity. I have gotten more out of Beato in one year than all of my years on TH-cam combined.
Thank you for this! Listening to Adam explain the (relative) simplicity of things after being in the correct alternate tunings reminds me of Kim Thayil's quote in an Ultimate Guitar interview "Why would I make it tougher? We're not trying to make things tough by using alternate tunings. The whole purpose is to make things easier."
When he said, "You let the 'tuning' do the work for you," all I could think of was Keith Richards. Never heard this band before. Somehow I've missed it in your videos up until now. I'm definitely intrigued, though.
Swervies have been one of my favourite bands of all time since i discovered them about 13 years ago, i didn't know anyone else that has hesrd of them. Its so good to see such a big channel talk about them! Adam is a guitar genius and they're also incredible live, one of the loudest shows i have ever been to on the I Wasnt Born to Lose You tour.
I played bass in a band where the songs were largely inspired by Swervedriver but I'd never really got in them. What a melodic revelation "girl on a motorbike" is! Will be watching this again many times with guitar in hand. ❤ thanks Rick
So stoked to see Swervedriver featured on your channel. The band really did something special in the crowded field of early 90s (and beyond) guitar-based rock music. I think they have a lot to offer for listeners who haven’t delved into their catalog yet - like 6 full albums and a long scavenger hunt of b-sides and EPs. Now, in the 4th decade of their life as a band, there is virtually no one who puts it together like they do.
If you do a Blackmore interview, make sure you watch other interviews over the decades so you know his sarcasm and rhythm. He’s never serious in interviews. Maybe bring Candice to translate 😂 don’t go in cold. Predetermine your questions too. I’ve sat with him on a couple occasions in the late 70s and early 80s. He was very nice and affable. He didn’t need to be since I was just a 18 year old kid. But I didn’t gush or fanboy. He appreciated that I think.
One of my favorite things about this channel is being introduced to new (to me) bands/artists/musicians Every so often I hear something that makes me stop and really pay attention...and now I need to investigate Swervedriver's catalog and see what's what.
Duel is a gorgeous tune and I love how into the music these guys get. As a complete novice at playing, watching Rick and the guests he has on makes me want to keep playing and trying to get better!
Best band of all time for me. When I stumbled upon Son of Mustang Ford ep in a record store in 1990 I was hooked. Great to see them get some of the attention they deserve.
Rik - that was utterly amazing - thank you!. To see how happy this made you was a joy. I absolutely love Swervedriver going right back to the early 90’s - I literally only know a couple of people who like them…they’ve always been “mine” if that makes sense! I’ve always thought that Swervedriver are uncoverable…The guitar sound is thick, lush, crunchy, dreamy and these odd tunings explain it. Nice work Rik!
91'/92' My just out of high school cover band used to do Son of Mustang Ford. We loved Swervedriver and this is so cool to see Rick dig in deep on the actual parts. After seeing this though, there was no way we were playing it correctly. I'd like to think we did it justice and shared the Swerve driver love with anybody who heard us. More with Adam please!
Mezcal Head absolutely blew my mind when it came out! It still blows my mind! Such a different sound. It's in my top ten favorite albums. I'm so glad that I got to see them live.
I looked into my CD collection and found 2 CD from them... but nit the one with the Bull showed here.... I listened to them (Ibhaven"t since the 90's...) and it is pretty good !!! Love the wall of sound with airy guitares and up temp drums... those were the times !
This video needs more motorcycles! "Duel" was one of the most memorable songs off of the Road Rash Sega CD game soundtrack. Hard to believe many years later I'm learning about how it was played. Excellent work here Rick!
Another badass video on great introduction to alternate tuning concepts and how alternate tuning could simplify what you're trying to do really love that Great energy in the video great rapport as usual keep them coming
I openingly admit to not being aware i(of Swervedriver. I am now! Wow!! I've got some homework and catching up to do..Totally refreshing to the ear and soul. Oh, I and feeling a little bit of the Husker Du vibe.
I've been watching Rick for years, and this video is EXACTLY why I always always always stay subscribed and check in to what content Rick's putting out. This music brings back so many memories and Rick always breaks it down so I can wrap my head around it. Merry Christmas everyone!
I saw Swerdriver opening for Smashing Pumpkins in Montreal in 1992 or 93, and I fell in love with them right there on the spot. What a band, what a show.
Now I will download a bunch of swervedriver albums and start listening to them because Rick Beato introduced me to them. See how that works record company attorneys?
Rick, I'm thrilled you did this video and I'm thrilled they are recording again. I have been a SWD fan for decades and Mezcal Head is the only CD I wore out and had to replace. So great! (and yes, I'm aware of recent releases, my name is on Future Ruins)
I've meet Adam a few times. He's one of my all-time favourite guitarists. I totally embarrassed myself in Criminal Records acting like a complete fanboy years ago. He was doing a solo gig there before the SD show later that night and played Maelstrom upon my request. It was the best song of the lot. Felt like I may have redeemed myself. Maybe not... Swervedriver remains one of my favourite bands ever. Great video.
Thanks Adam, Thanks Rick-such a good time you projected right into the audience- it’s like I was there with you; giddy as a schoolboy. I am now revisiting SD and adding some new song to my playlist!
Mannnn.... Just like Mike... Had a band in the 90's... And never could figured out how they did it... That was a priceless and niché Master Class ... Many thank youz
Thanks for having Adam again. I’ve seen them a few times always in very small venues in the New England area but undoubtedly like Moose, Kitchens of Distinction, Slowdive and even Asobi Seksu, always blow my mind. Shoegaze is one of my favorite genres.
I love this - seeing Rick almost *blush* when Adam starts to sing Girl on a Motorbike with him playing along - reminds me we never lose that feeling for music we really love.
So revealing - Never lose that feeling
I see what you did there.
Knowing how much this band means to Rick, couldn’t help but smile through this whole video - especially when they’re playing together. I know the feeling, got to play guitar with a few of my guitar heroes. Such a special occasion. Thank you for sharing.

It came up with Billy Corrigan when he talked about Alan Moulder producing Siamese Dream
I had the biggest grin on my face when Rick and Adam started playing "Girl on a Motorbike" together. Then Adam starts singing. Bloody great.
I don’t think Adam understood how big this channel was first time he was on. I’m loving the Love-In.
So cool of Adam to share this, you can tell he just loves music. We. Blown away when he started to sing along while Rick was playing.

I saw Swervedriver at Liberty Lunch in ATX (circa 1997 with Hum). One of the loudest bands I’ve ever heard! This was great. Thank you, RB!

They were not the only shoegaze band that leaned towards "grunge" - Curve are another I can think of that actually got a record deal and got heard...
9:49 Super Rick moment.
Catherine Wheel were grunge-adjacent in the middle of their career and had a minor breakthrough on radio and MTV probably for that reason.
Ever since hearing Sandblasted all those years ago I have been a huge Swervedriver fan. This made my day

Watching a cooking video you can never taste what they are cooking. I no nothing of music, but with your video I can hear what is cooking.
I never heard of those guys but that first tuning was amazing!
