5 Things To Consider For A Successful Sketch

- Hello my fellow sketchers!
I was looking after a relative the other day and found my nerves all in a tangle.
Before I go on - Reuben would like you to know that his code is ROISINCURE for your lovely Mr. Fluffy Friend. Yes it should say Reuben Curé but I dropped the ball on that one. Reuben's pride is in tatters. But the bed is fab. It is the most nesty of nest-like dog beds I have ever come across. Why did I spend €40 on a dog bed? Because (a) Reuben is spoiled and (b) he has recently been banished from the sofa - it's new-ish, it's beautiful and it was getting covered in dog hairs - and I needed something even better than a sofa to convince him to stay off. Job done.
My mother recommended the bed, as she bought one for her dog - Babette is super-anxious when it comes to fireworks, and she trembles like a leaf every time the citizens of Bray get them going, which is often. Mum says the bed has worked wonders, and that Babette volunteers to go to bed before bedtime since it arrived.
So my nerves were in a tangle and I needed to calm down. I knew that sketching is always my go-to rescue remedy, and sure enough within about 20 seconds I was feeling okay again.
Then, as I was making and editing the video, I realised that I could break down a sketch into five elements that will guarantee a sketch you're happy with...
And the rest is in the video!
Happy sketching - see you next time!
Love
Róisín
Oops i dropped the ball. Nearly missed this beautiful video. The sketch was wonderful. Loved the photos and your commentary. Goodnight.
And good night to Reuben 🐾
@@annipetratos9401 thank you Anni ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you so much. I learn every time I watch you!
@@triciakidd3731 my pleasure!
Thank you for the lovely video! …. love the painting in the background too ❤
@@annettw2794 thank you, that’s a sketch of mine drawn from life that I had blown up to a canvas!
@roisincure I looks gorgeous enlarged!
Thanks, I was delighted with it. Funny how people all over the world respond to the dry stone walls.
Loved the sketch. Thank you. Love Rubin too. Still enjoying my sketch pocket. 🥰
I’m happy to hear that Patricia!
Great tips , thanks Roisin 😊…glad that Ruben is enjoying his new bed 😊
@@leighrogers1383 yes he’s thrilled
Love this
Thank you x
Very inspiring, thankyou Roisin!
@@jessicastrideart I’m delighted! You’re welcome!
Am in awe of your sketching especially the faces in the photos. Ink and watercolour is my favourite medium and am picking up a lot from you. Thanks.
@@grigorisgirl thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this video and for inspiring me to sketch. As someone new to urban sketching, I would love to see more of you breaking the 5 things down ❤ ! Rueben - ahhh what a cute one he is. Makes me SOOO want a dog which is highly impractical for where/how I live and cannot happen 😂
Thank you! Yes I will do that for sure. I feel the same about getting a cat!
Thanks Roisin. The choosing the colour pallet tip help me a lot. Sometimes I put to many colors I will look for the color that call mi atención and base the pallet on that. Thanks You are the Greatest
@@carmenzaldivar4393 gracias Carmen, eres muy maja ❤️ ¡Menos colores es siempre mejor!
You are fearless. You can paint anything it seems, or am I wrong?
@@marielouiseweeksb33attitud33 almost anything! I was commissioned to do Bundee Aki (Irish rugby player originally Kiwi of Samoan descent) for a commemorative mug recently and the third portrait of him I did nearly KILLED me! But I got it in the end. Still haven’t seen the finished product. So I would say painting portraits from tiny screenshots is one thing I can’t do very well!
@ for me florals and vehicles are my sore point but portraits are my strength
@marielouiseweeksb33attitud33 vehicles are great craic! I’ll do a video on them ☺️
@ yay. Thank you. I need help. Bless your heart
@marielouiseweeksb33attitud33 you’ll love them ❤️
The dog made it as a professional actor before me? That is a tough pill to swallow
@@paddycure that’s nuttin’. The dog is FAR more popular than me and he’s made ZERO videos.
Lol, Ruben the influencer 😂
These are great points... Out urban sketching yesterday (before this video was posted) I used each of these points, in pretty much that order, and it worked out fine, so I can vouch for them 😃
Great to hear! 🙏
Hi, I’m getting the gift of a fube pen & blank ink cartridge, I wonder what the pink ink you sometimes use is called & is it waterproof to paint over top of? Thanks, love your channel 💜
@@kathleenrennie5647 yes that’s Fuschia Document Ink by De Atramentis. It’s waterproof and all-round perfect 🤩
@ thank you so much, I’m inspired because of your art & can’t wait to try the pen & pink ink 🖋️💞✨
That’s so lovely to hear!
Just saw your video about sketching El Camino de Santiago Inglés. Is there a book about those sketching?
No there is not, but you can listen to my podcast about it - I think I did it in both Spanish and English! My podcast is called Sketch Therapist and it’s on Spotify. I don’t do it anymore but you’ll enjoy it I think.
Is Ruben (great name….my great-grandfather’s, who had a fuzzy face much like your Ruben’s) a terrier? I don’t know much about dogs, what type of terrier is he?
@@robinwild1 he’s an Aussie Jack Russell (very rough coated which means soft and fluffy ❤️)
@ does he have another breed as I was looking at the Aussie Jack Russell photos on line and Ruben is much cuter?
I’m inclined to agree but we are thoroughly biased! I think we just got very lucky with Reuben because I know his extended family and friends and he was infinitely cuter than most of them. There was one little girl that I fell in love with but she was sold and I wasn’t looking for a second dog anyway. She had long white eyelashes and slightly pink eyes…she was called Figgy but in my mind I called her Piggy ❤️
What kind of dog is Reuben? TIA.
@@catherinelevison3310 I might put his breed in the description under each video as folk seem to be interested! He’s a rough Aussie Jack Russell and he was bred by the great Annie Taylor of Ardrahan. Sadly she doesn’t do JRTs any more but her dogs are second to none. It must be said that unlike Reuben, all her dogs are excellent ratters 😳
@ he is beautiful. I’m watching him at the beach with you off his lead. I have a Maltipoo who is the same size and I get his hair cut as a terrier. I also do watercolor. . . So I subscribed today as we have so much in common. We can become pen pals if you wish. I live in Washington state on the west coast of the USA. I love plein air painting. Love my dog. Love nature. I’m trying to learn French. I will give you my email if you want it. Thank you ever so much for the beautiful videos and art work!!!
You’re very sweet Catherine. I run an online sketching group and I have lots of Americans in the group. We sketch once a week on a Monday (11.00am your time) and then we chat on Zoom on Tuesdays. I do the teaching and the students follow along. We get to know each other so if you’d like to meet a whole community of like-minded artists like you then you should consider joining my Sketch Club!
@ okay, I’ll join. I’m happy to be included. Thank you.
@catherinelevison3310 I look forward to seeing you in the Club! You’ll find the membership link on my website 😊
