      @tyler stclair The Katana is nice and all the goodies that come with it really make it. The Vypyr 3 is a good piece of gear but is let down by the one thing that lets down most Peavey guitar cabs and combos. They put shit speakers in them. Call up Celestion or Eminence and get something that doesn't suck.
      That's one of the things that makes the Katana line so good, those killer Waza Craft speakers.

      @tyler stclair Hey man, we're all a family here. You can jump on the Spyder hate bandwagon if you want, if you use really any boost or compressor in front of the "Crunch" channel on a Spyder you can actually get tones that rival modern amp emulations. Put a great speaker in one of these combo's and you're golden! If you have nice IR's you can just record direct into your daw from the headphone out and get really decent tones for what they're worth, a little bit of onboard EQ and you're in the game!

    6:27 I guess this means that even though Thomann guitar rejects are still worth selling and are playable, when it comes to Gibson rejects, they are in a totally different class - they are not even worth selling or playing.

    • @animamundii
      @animamundii 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess you are a moron, if that's what you got from his explanation.
      Gibson is a reputable brand, after shitty QC and other problems, they can't risk putting out rejected guitars, because people will jump on it and say, "Hey, it's got this problem.." which would destroy their brand even further. Thomann doesn't risk anything because their brand isn't as lucrative.
      It's like if Prada gave out rejected bags.. some moron would buy it and then complain "Hey I got Prada bag (for 1/3rd of the price) and the zipper doesn't work.." etc.
      You'd be one of those morons, that's my guess.

    Contracts are supposed to be a mutual agreement. If you see something you don't like, it's your right (and obligation) to try and negotiate that point to reach a compromise. And there's always the option to say no, and go independent. It's totally viable these days.

    Peavey VYPYR amps, "analog" - yes, the amp models use analog circuit models, only effects like reverb etc are implemented digitally. And unlike Line6, Hartley Peavey knows in detail how real tube guitar amps are supposed to work and why they sound how they sound, and you can hear it. I don't know if they fixed it with the newer (VIP ?) line, but there's one gripe I have about the Vypyr series (at least the lower end, 15 and 30 models I know) is the Noise gate - you can't adjust it, so lower output pickup, turned even back some with the volume knob to temporarily tame an amp model might get you into a fight with the fixed noise threshold. But if you're mostly playing "loud" stuff, that's not an issue.

    To the one comment about full sail... if traveling isnt an issue... Sacramento City College is where I just graduated from. The professor, Kirt Shearer, has many years of recording experience and over the last 3 years he's completely renovated the 3 studios in the school. The main studio even has the same Audient console that you have in your place now! Even has several rack cabinates full of gear such as Trident/Kush EQs, a ton of preamps like Burl and many many compressors. There are like 4 main recording classes and even have a live sound/audio video part.. along with other classes like Pro Tools 101/110/201 and other music fundamental classes and since I graduated I've been working with a lot of cool people. Definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get serious. We also need more students as if the classes don't fill up the district removes the class forever.

    Hi Glen. Short version of the question - Any thoughts on different vs identical rhythm guitar parts in metal?
    Ana here's a longer version of the question. I like to play identical parts in choruses (so they would sound bigger), but with riffs and verses I'm trying to experiment (to the best of my ability and knowledge). The easiest solution I liked is to play in different octaves. Or let one guitarist play fifth, while I play thirds, an octave higher. To me this way sounds more interesting, but we often argue with the other guitar player, because he wants all the songs to have the same rhythm guitar parts, so they would sounds bigger and meaner all the time. I think it's ok for some songs to have those identical parts to achieve huge guitar sound, but it's boring, when all the songs are like that. Is there some reason to my thinking or am I completely wrong?

    • @InsidiousOne
      @InsidiousOne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not Glenn, but I thing this it's fine to use this trick if the music demands it, of if the idea of the riff itself is based on this trick, but doing it just for the sake of "not being boring" is a mistake. If the simple rhythm part sounds cool, just leave it as it is.

    • @AlexNitsu
      @AlexNitsu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@InsidiousOne Thanks for your opinion. By boring I meant that I think it's boring when all the riffs and guitar parts in all the songs are identical. But I agree with you that we should fist and foremost serve the song

    Yes, even the "Good riddance to the bass player" I think it shows a tremendous tool to conceptualize a bass part without having to rely on muscle memory or instrument limitations. I ve learned a lot these past couple of years watching your videos and as I m starting to record and mix myself for the first times, they are more than ever relevant to me. Hi Glenn! I have a question and I did not find an answer so far: I am building a little studio right now in the basement. Ho do I get my cables from one room to the ohter without getting too much sound into the control-room? We will do a little break-through but I am afraid I will get too much sound through that hole in the end. We will use a 24-channel Presonus rack-interface for the recordings so we will only have a small network cable for this one. But I would also like to be able to play guitar in the control room while turning up the tube-amp in the recording room. What would be the best solution and how do you do that? Are patchbays usable for guitar-to -amp-connections, too? Thanks and many greetz from Germany! Max

    The display mentioned in reference to the Nutube is a VFD, or Vacuum Fluorescent Display. It's a twin triode and in the datasheet KORG lists it as a preamp tube. It doesn't use as high power as a tube, maxing at something like 80v. It's really nice that it's solid state, sounds great, and costs $50, but you only need one. Sure beats having to replace multiple tubes that cost the same.

    To the guy asking about Full Sail:
    I'm from Orlando, where Full Sail operates. When audio professionals from the area see "Full Sail" on a resume, they throw it out. It may work for you outside of this particular city, but they don't have a great rep here. A lot of the students that graduate Full Sail end up getting their first professional audio job at... Full Sail, teaching the same course they just learned. I personally never attended the school, but have worked closely with individuals that went to Full Sail. Those people were sometimes great and knew exactly what they were doing and others I questioned their ability to navigate putting their pants on in the morning. Most of my impression comes from two personally respected audio professionals that both worked at Full Sail and have nothing but negative things to say about it.

    I just swapped out my bass pickups and electronics with an EMG kit. The idea of solderless connections was pretty appealing, but I'm a bit concerned with longevity. RDE Lutherie unfortunately I'm going to need to remove the pickup at least once. The hole in the body for feeding the wire is too high, which is preventing me from lowering the G-string side of the pickup where it needs to be. I'm just *really* not thrilled about the thought of taking a drill bit to my good bass. At least the area will be covered by the pickup...

    • @dbackscott
      @dbackscott 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      RDE Lutherie that's a really good point about the drill bit. I was planning to lay a piece of scrap wood on top to protect the face of the bass. Also, I'd be drilling straight on and not sideways. My plan is to widen about the first half inch of the hole.
      Your idea to use a Dremel sounds great, but unfortunately mine just burned out. However, I suppose I can always chuck up a small carving bit into my drill. It's not ideal, but it should work.

I've watched a lot of your reviews and seen some stuff that looks good but I'm still kinda unsure. I could always spend a bit more on something like a 5150 but even that feels like it's missing just a bit of low end. I love having a beefy but clear sound. Cheers frlm the U.S. Glenn!

      There are a ton of great options, depending on what you are looking for and looking to do. Are you looking to gig, use it as a pedal platform or just amp gain, budget, etc.
      For myself, I wanted a great amp for clean/crunch that could do great high gain with pedals. The Ceriatone OTS20 does this for me so well, I havent had GAS since I got it (!!). Well.. For amps at least.

      @@demoninkstudios7735 I feel like the best advice is to get something you wont outgrow, but rather can expand from down the road. The Katana is a fantastic option for that! It also has the benefit of a HUGE list of features to really be able to hone in on what you might use, and what you might not use. In my experience, its not always obvious til we play with it for a while.
      Are you in a position to try one out in person? With some of these amps, like Ceriatone, thats not as easy.. But the Katana series is massively, massively popular.
      Ive been really curious about the Katana Air myself

    hey glenn!
    thanks for all the advice troughout the years, helped me a lot with mic placement and getting the mix tone.
    now most of your videos are metal based, i as a punkhead have used many of your tips and they just worked fine.
    would you say i could achieve a better(tighter) mix/master with other placements or other mics than the ones you call out all the time?
    at the moment im recording my band (punk/hardcore) trough:
    an akg session 1 set for drums, except for a sennheiser 906 for the snare and a 57 for extra high-hat
    57 and 906 for both guitars
    bass directly from the amp, xlr direct out
    singer trough a rode procaster and an mxl 990
    this all runs into a tascam 16x08 and the mix/master is done on a veeeeery beefy pc in reaper, so digital effects wont be a problem.
    also for the next question:
    i am planning to do a "full analog" album.
    meaning i would get enough mics (which i still have to buy) to mic up all of the band simulatiously, run this trough an alto live 2404 (because it has 4 aux and 4 sub-outs, which i still have to buy too).
    this would go into a tascam tsr-8 (has 8 channels ,1/2 inch tape, which i already have)
    and once were done recording i would take that tape and run it back trough the alto live 2404 into a master-tabedeck-recorder (which i already have too).
    i was plnning to use the aux and sub outs of the alto live 2404 to go into the old tascam 8band taperecorder (since its both 8 channels)
    and since i dont have the infinite channels im used to have on a digital record i would bunch channels together, like snare and kick goes on "drums middle" and everything left and right of it to "drums right" and "drums left", so i can still record everyone in like 16 channels but be able to use the 8band tapemachine.
    this way keeping the signal as analog as humanly possible.
    do you think this is a good idea or do you have other thoughts?
    thanks in advance, sry this post got so long
    fuck yiou glenn

    Glenn, if one must mix on headphones which one do you think would yield better results: using Waves Abbey Road 3 or Sonarworks Reference 4? Unfortunately my bedroom is an untreated concrete cube with 4m ceiling height and the only place to put my desk is the corner. The amount of acoustic treatment required to make this space into a usable mixing environment is would be too expensive. But I can feasibly drop 100 EUR on a pair of AKG K-702s and another 100 EUR on correction software if that would be a noticeable improvement over just mixing on "uncorrected" K-240 mk IIs.

    Thanks for the tip about Corrosion of Conformity, Glenn - the album is great and unique, I love that! I was prepared for the mix to a degree because of your description, but was not expecting the lead vocals to be panned as well, a bold mix that to me was reminiscent of stereo experiments on LP's in the early 70's (I'm old, lol). I played in a band with a guy that went to Full Sail in the 80's - he's been really happy with his training and has no regrets at all, is working steady in Portland, and has recorded some big name artists and he also does a lot of audio for film.

    Hey Glenn
    Question: I’m recording through a Steinburg UR22 and I’m having an issue with peaking. My guitar is direct into the interface, using the latest Andy James plugin, and any time I palm mute or hit the lower strings with any sort of aggression I spike on my track. The gain knob on the interface doesn’t fix this, even when I pretty much turn down all the way. Ive also tried a DI box (ART Passive), and still the same issue. Passive pickups in my guitar but yet I’m still running Hot no matter what I do. I’ve also been through the forums and it seems this is an issue that has happened to a few people. Should I try a better DI? Maybe something like the LR Baggs Active with a desperate gain knob? Or just a better interface all together?
    Thanks again. As always I appreciate every vid you put out!

    Hi Glenn, to answer your question about the NuTube: Yes, the Korg NuTube is definitely a preamp tube. It's a double triode, like a 12AX7. I got a DIY overdrive pedal kit on my desk since a few days. Can't wait to solder it together and see how it sounds. So yeah, you could build a bigger amp with NuTubes in the preamp stage. I guess a hybrid amp with this concept could be killer...super light, super reliable tube tech.

    Computers have opened up another world of how I consume music, so to speak. I don't feel the love with Spotify just yet, the CDs still trumps that for me, but I love the fact you can listen to anything online, if you need to.
    Recording music has never been easier too, and that is so much to do with the software available to normal people at home. We're no longer struggling with 4 track cassette tapes when all you need is a DAW and an affordable pre-amp.
    I've found so much entertainment from your channel, mainly because it is not biased or censored. Hi Glenn, with regard to distribution, what do you think about physical media and selling albums? Without getting into a discussion about whether or not you think Tool is relevant, I find their physical release of this new album an interesting case study. It's too long to fit on the CD, so they also give you an MP3 download code to add in the little intermission tracks. The packaging is crazy, with a video screen that plays a video when you open the jacket, and it has a cool little art/lyrics booklet. It's the "deluxe" set, but it's actually the only way you can physically buy the album. There is no plain jane jewel case option, and its not going to be printed in the future. If you want to listen, just use Spotify.
    I feel though, like they didn't take it far enough. Why not put your physical album on a USB key instead of a CD, include lossless formats as well? and Digital art to accompany the physical "feelies." Maybe include stems so all your fans can remix your songs. I don't see much of a future in physical releases except maybe the die-hards wanting vinyl. But this ultra-deluxe thing sounds like it could be something for limited runs for your core fans. Thoughts?
    Cheers and Fuck You.

Is built much like a display too, that's why it kind of looks "chip like", but it is indeed a real vacuum tube. However, the amount to power it can handle is flea-sized even compared to a 12AX7, so they are definitely just something to spice up the preamp section of an amp etc.

There are things in them I can change, most of it I can't. Experienced authors know this and know what they're comfortable agreeing to and not. New guys try to rip everything apart because they're nervous. I hope I never come off as "pissy," I get that the author is just trying to look out for themselves. But I can definitely get backed into a corner of having to say "We can't change all that."

    Former full sail student here. You’ll get what you put into it. If you expect them to get you to a level that is good enough to be employed by a studio you’re wrong. You need to go above and beyond and it’s a good idea to go into the school with as much knowledge as possible so you can seek the people out who can actually expand on that and get you ready for the real world and its demands and expectations. Nothing beats experience.
