Johnny Rotten didn't want anything to do with this project. They didn't ask him to be a part of it and he was very vocal about not liking it and pissed they completely excluded him from it. He didn't want a "Disney" Version he wanted the real story out there. This is more of Jonesy's story from his book. And I guess Jonesy and Rotten don't get along and the last time they talked was through lawyers.
So sad that Jonesy course to avoid John for so long. I understand why Steve struggles to trust John with his fragility, he really should have seen how it was going to turn out and his regret at that could have been avoided. Being sidelined for so long really hurt John and his own fragility is demonstrated as anger. I deeply hope that one day they can mend the hurt they cause one another.
The show really did a good job of recreating the seediness and squalor of London in the 70's. The band, actually sound pretty good, maybe too good. Most Pistol's gig's suffered from shit PA's, and sound-men who weren't used to such aggressive (loud) playing. Acting is good, considering they're playing such larger than life characters. I wasn't there, so fuck knows how accurate it all is, but it's a TV show, so some license is expected. McLaren really was an obnoxious prick though, they definitely got that right.

I was into hairbands a lot as teen in late 80s and couldn't stand the noises of punk before. Damn now I actually look into it and realized how powerful it is except the drugs part of course. Punk wasn't isn't really any more druggy than other rock scenes. In fact there is a 'straight edge movement' in punk where people are very clean-living.
Punk is still very much around, it's just not in the forefront of the general publics mind. There's been so many breat punk bands that have emerged in the last 30 years

Episode 4 had a part from my homework Barnsley. Loved my Punk rock days when I was at school. Still have the bollox album on in the car occasionally. Loved the show.
I think it’s hard when tackling any project where the subjects are so well known, and the project is so slanted from the perspective of one member (Steve Jones) it’s difficult. All three I thought did a great approximation of the spirit of the character, even if they weren’t identical copies. You have to factor in they were also responsible for making the music used on the show and it’s a pretty impressive achievement

I thought it was gonna be total dog **** put off watching it ...until my mate told me it was really worth watching . So i took the plunge and watched it and have to say i learned alot and thought wow very good . Shame John was not involved but i think he had other things to worry about . Maybe there will be another 6 parter to follow but with John involved could be called fat 40 and back ..
I don't believe they tried to meet with or involve John Lydon, which is an absolute piss-take considering the fact that he was integral to the whole thing.
I suspect Jonesy was just choosing to avoid what he may have assumed (not without justification) to have been some kind of confrontation. He rightly suspected John would not have been interested in Disney, would have been sceptical of having actors and a script rather than themselves telling their own story and Jonesy struggles to stand up to John, therefore avoid, avoid, avoid (or rather delay inevitable, delay inevitable, delay inevitable). These are two beautiful human beings, both with fragilities, flaws and faults. It is clear listening to them in numerous interviews at different times over the years that they both admire and have deep affection for the other, they just don't rub along easily. It makes me very sad that they come to this stage of their lives with renewed conflict when it should be reconciliation. They are both responsible, but both with scars.

I also appreciate that Steve had the right to have a project of his own and I understand why he chose to avoid talking to John (doesn't make it right, but I get it). What really annoyed me was how many times Steve acknowledged John's correct assessment of the previous projects he fought, acknowledged that TFATF (John's project) was truthful and authentic as well as democratic and rightfully included all surviving members. Stated later that he wished he had said more when he had the chance during TFATF and then screws it up himself. I believe he now realises he was wrong and hypocritical to not include John from the start. Steve behaved the way he did out of fear. John would not have approved of Disney but if honest had acted with courage rather than fear, who's to say John wouldn't have been on board with the format but perhaps wanted Julian (or maybe even Danny) and could have insisted on the script being closer to the book and might have encouraged Steve to be more involved (though between Covid travel restrictions and his personal health may have precluded direct involvement anyway). Trouble is Steve doesn't realise how much John loves him. He thinks John would have just been negative out of hand (yes possible) when there is every chance that he might have offered excellent advice and encouragement. Shame John never got the chance really. I think Steve knows he fucked up. Sadly he needs even MORE courage now to do what is needed to put things right. Courage has never been Jonesy's strong point, that's what drugs and alcohol were for.

We can see them more as human beings and can relate to their struggles and personality quirks. Finished the show and honestly it wasn’t great. My own dad who was a punk in the 70s refuses to watch it. The looks and the makeup can be spot on but that doesn’t help when the show itself I feel did nothing special or new. The only thing this show will do is bring on imitator punks who think it’s cool to dress like this but have no clue what being a real punk is about or what it was like back in the 70s/80s. I don’t think it’s very fair either for the actor playing Rotten to say ‘Lydon chose not to be involved’. The actor wasn’t involved in any of the negotiations and from Rotten himself he says he was never approached and doesn’t agree with anything in the show. He should simply say he didn’t meet Lydon and leave it at that.
Here is my take on PISTOL after watching it twice. Sydney Chandler stole the show as Chrissie Hynde. For those who didn’t know she is the daughter of the great Actor Kyle Chandler. I see why Johnny Lydon wanted to boycott the series He is portrayed as a dork Anson Boons wig is really bad and doesn’t even slightly resemble Johnnys hair however he presents a decent vioice imitation. Louis Partidge looks like a runway model. Gary Oldman looked more like Sid then anyone. I believe the cast could have been alot better but I don’t live in Danny Boyles head. I find it interesting that Johnny Lydon and Steve Jones are at such opposite ends Steve is an Executive Producer for PISTOL and Johnny Hates it and want’s nothing to do with it. Chrissie Hynde supports it and that says alot because she ‘s a badass. Malcolm is gone so who knows what he would have thought. It will probably help to sell more Sex Pistols records and expose a new generation to the notorious Punk band. The series is entertaining and that’s what you expect from any TV series. right ?

He treasurers the Pistols (and of course his own) legacy and had always seeked to protect it. That is why he fought WKB, the subsequent GRRS, Sid and Nancy, the episode of The Queen that sought to include a fantasized idea of the Pistols during the 1978 Jubilee and biggest of all himself as a young man on his own, fighting Malcolm in court on behalf of the band. Steve will have understood all this, has acknowledged over the years that John was right in all those instances, so knew he was likely to have a confrontation. Sadly, I suspect he might have hoped that John would just roll over if it were already a done deal, that was naive.

John Ritchie was a fashion victim, he did modelling at college, 'pre-Nancy Sid' was John Ritchie playing a character to a large extent (big ego attached) whereas Junkie Sid was a product of heroin and mental illness. I don't know if Sid really knew who he was, or he did but was choosing to suppress it. John has spoken of the real Sid many times and he is not who Sid appeared to be publicly.

It wasn’t until the world became all PC and the youth became scared of their own shadows (parents fault for mollycoddling them) that you began to see the last of the true rebels. You youth don’t get it, don’t understand it and never ever will. Not your fault though……but entirely sad, and because of it, the days of true rock and roll are gone. Never again will you see the likes of the pistols, oasis in their hay day, Marilyn Manson as one of the last true rockers…..etc etc. It was a sad day for music when we started wrapping the youth up in cotton wool and fighting their battles for them. I just watched it & it's simply awful. The first episode is terrible & after that it goes downhill at a rapid speed. It's supposedly based on Steve Jones memoir & the live band scenes, Jesus it's embarrassing. If the Pistols sounded like they do in this series we wouldn't have had Punk. Honestly if they can't even get close to how the Pistols sounded live it's just shabby & kinda ridiculous. A waste of time and money.
Im at ep3 and to me its okay. Of course its not gonna be the same as the real thing. But its still fun to watch. Its a tribute to the pistols and theres nothing wrong with that.

I liked the series. I think it portrayed Jones' account of things well. Ofc it was cringe at times but it was always going to be.

@@tinamitchell7496 Punk didn't die. There were still bazilions of DIY bands, indie labels, and all ages shows. Probably still are, but I'm too old to be part of that scene now.

That was inevitable sadly. John has not been wrong about these things yet and Steve knows this which I believe is why he kept it from him for so long. He didn't want John talking him out of giving it to Disney and creating 'Friends' meets punk...
While “Brothers of the Head” is languishing in obscurity? Those “Brothers” guys were far better actors, telling a far more verite’ story than these Disney poseurs. Corporate media feeds the masses.

Your generation can’t even think for yourselves, so how can you even fathom what the punk mindset was. Which I might add……was still around up until the 90’s. It wasn’t until the world became all PC and the youth became scared of their own shadows (parents fault for mollycoddling them) that you began to see the last of the true rebels. You youth don’t get it, don’t understand it and never ever will. Not your fault though……but entirely sad, and because of it, the days of true rock and roll are gone. Never again will you see the likes of the pistols, oasis in their hay day, Marilyn Manson as one of the last true rockers…..etc etc. It was a sad day for music when we started wrapping the youth up in cotton wool and fighting their battles for them. It was done with good intentions, but what’s ironic, is that I’m the parents of these pussys, we’re the original punks etc, and so scared of having their kids follow in their own foot steps, that they put a stop to it. Little did they realise that the mistakes the parents made as punks, taught them certain life skills and made them the people they are today! You can’t pass those lessons on without the kids first learning them! Jesus wept…..🤦🏻♂️
David i could not have said it any better my self you are 100 % correct . i was 15 when punk and The Damned and the Pistols exploded . Started work at 16 there was no PC or H&S . No mollycoddling or running to the Personnel departments crying . It was a case of shut up and grow up ..

I just watched it & it's simply awful. The first episode is terrible & after that it goes downhill at a rapid speed. It's supposedly based on Steve Jones memoir & the live band scenes, Jesus it's embarrassing. If the Pistols sounded like they do in this series we wouldn't have had Punk. Honestly if they can't even get close to how the Pistols sounded live it's just shabby & kinda ridiculous. A waste of time and money.
Yep, when I first heard the Pistols back in the day, they actually scared the shit out of me. Seeing Boyles Pistol was so cringe, truly awful.
