The lack of available parking across the country after about 5-6 p.m. (or earlier depending on where you are) will give the answer. There's no driver shortage in the slightest.
@@dwrjr27 maybe on OTR. Local needs drivers badly. My old company can't get or keep drivers, all left and went to OTR. Too many want to be like Alex the trucking guy. The big boss offered them $7500 to stay but they all refused.
Foreign visa workers are 75% of the problem. Once that's acknowledged, we can move forward to fix it. Dirty truck stops, low pay, and accidents. These are some of the issues that directly correlates with the foreign driver issue. I've been driving for almost 3 years now OTR and I have seen this with my own eyes!
I drove a couple of years about 20 years ago. Commercial Carriers talked the Government into shutting down almost all rest areas along the Interstate. Alledgedly there was more than enough parking at Truck Stops. If you don't mind facing Lot Lizards, Robbers, Inadequate Bathroom and Shower facilities, good resteraunts turned in Fast Food Horrors.
In my opinion as a 5 year OTR driver, the largest issues with trucking are: Car drivers, over-regulation, parking shortage, fuel costs and as a legal immigramt and now citizen- VISA drivers in flip flops. But number 1 to me is OVER-REGULATION THAT MAKES NO SENSE, I START MY ELD AND THEM YOU CANT STOP!!
Imagine how bad inflation would show itself to the uneducated and ignorant Americans, if trucking was fair. Of course there is not a shortage of drivers. The only people that would suggest there is a shortage have something to gain by adding more drivers. Go to any truck stop in the country. Even the ones off the beaten path haves lots of trucks 24/7, and the ones in hot spots almost never have an empty spot.
It's the trucking company's that either work our drivers to the ground w do it or u be fired carriers.or escrow thief from 1099 bs . Or just no pay . I personally called labor department on company and they changed their company name and location. Ask me how I know 😌
it’s not driver shortage it’s a freight pay /+ driver pay shortage the retention problem is simply that after very short time drivers find out that 1970ies pay don’t pay bills in 2024 so the jump to next mega carrier paying few cents more ‘m driving local , for last 24+ years , probably making 2 or 3 times vs OTR drivers there are good paying companies out here , but usually not running OTR especially for mega carriers those companies only want huge volume of freight get hauled drivers are just numbers and don’t mean anything greed is what it all comes down too so : drive for small fleet or an in-house carrier or get your own authority and work in a niche driver shortage is pushed by mega carriers wanting to have more drivers drive for peanuts whilst they make billions - just follow the money , as always drive safe
well they want you to be gone 3 weeks, and act like getting home for 3 days is a great reward. not pay you at all during resets. they don't may OT, for detention they don't want to pay till after 2 hours and then only pay 20 an hour for it if you hit 3 hours. then there is break down pay, doing drop and hooks and bumping docks for free. Would anyone that doesnt drive truck think this would be a good deal and stay in that field? NO why i am not driving, I enjoyed the job just not enough to do all that work for free. That isn't even touching how you get treated by the company you work for, shippers and receives and how terrible afterhours and weekend officce workers are.
Simple solution is to not allow trucking companies to own more the 100 power units. It would allow for far more small carriers and far more owner operators thus making Competition much more responsible and far.
I started in 1976 as a company driver. I have done it all. Company Driver, Drove for an O/O, and I have been an O/O for 35 years. I retired in January of 2023. I have had my own Authority and have Leased to carriers. Pointing a finger to a single problem in trucking today is impossible. The largest problem that helped make my decision was the cost of operating. That cost has steadily increased while the revenues have stayed flat or even decreased. I was in the business to make money and I enjoyed the industry. I always found away to turn a profit. But man it is a struggle. I am 70 now and still in very good health. I do miss trucking but would never go back. There is just no money in it anymore.
Just retire after 50 yrs. of truck driving. There has never been a truck driver shortage. The only shortage there has ever been is good trucking companies that treat drivers with respect and pay them a good wage. The problem is turn over for those 💩💩💩 companies. People go to those 💩💩💩companies to get experience, but as soon as they can they quit and go to another company. The Truck driver shortage is an urban myth made up by the ATA.
And the industry is swamped with non English speaking , flip flop wearing , sweatpants , and headsets that don’t know what real money is! Amazing how much these people are on the phone! I don’t get it
Been driving 11 years. Each year truck stops are filled earlier and earlier in the day.
The amount of foreign drivers has skyrocketed
Never seen them on the local side and they have exp to do the job. Why is there no foreign driver on local side??
@leepialong that's because they're broke and need to live in a truck. Local guys need a home.

definitely not a shortage. that’s one of several reasons rates are low

Very informative video
John Larkin has not stated whether he has been a TD or if he has ever been in a semi truck.

‘m driving local , for last 24+ years , probably making 2 or 3 times vs OTR drivers
there are good paying companies out here , but usually not running OTR
especially for mega carriers
those companies only want huge volume of freight get hauled
drivers are just numbers and don’t mean anything
greed is what it all comes down too
so : drive for small fleet or an in-house carrier
or get your own authority and work in a niche
driver shortage is pushed by mega carriers wanting to have more drivers drive for peanuts
whilst they make billions - just follow the money , as always
