    Great video of restoring one of my all time favourite cars. As the previous owner of a 1964 Lotus Cortina you may regret running without air cleaners; Weber DCOE 40s are prone to misting and dripping petrol from the air inlets. On the twin cam Lotus engine the front carburetor is directly above the distributor (a source of sparks). It would be sad to see such a pristine car destroyed by a totally preventable fire.

    These were never cheap; in the early seventies my mate at college, a farmers son, had two and at that time they were worth about £600 each. They weren't that rare on the road and a guy on the same course as me at BL Cowley had one while I only had a GT. I have owned some powerful cars over the years but they just don't make cars with the excitement that these held because, to us , they were so exotic- and still are.

    It's such a beautiful car, isn't it? My mum had a mk1 estate in white in the early 1970s, a 1965 model. We went to Cornwall every year in that car.

    I had a Mk 1 with the A-frame rear end, but it did not have the large tubular transverse piece which I assume is a later mod to beef-up that vulnerable setup? The A-frame connected via a bush to the bottom of the diff housing and cause the steel closure plate at the rear of the diff to crack. Happened twice to me, then changed to leaf spring setup from a Cortina GT but that spoiled the handling in my view. Also my car was a 1964 model but had items not supposed to be included in that year - like the later grille which enclosed the indicators, and the brushed aluminium half-width dash panel instead of the earlier small binnacle. People tell me I am talking rubbish or have lost my memory - nope, I know what I drove!

      Hi. You are absolutely correct. All 64 cars had the full width dash and front grille. I have a 1965 mk 1 lotus Cortina registered in April of that year. A bracket converted to leaf springs. Lugs for a bracket on the diff housing. Original body shell unlike many that have been reshelled..Rog.pacific sunset.

      Further to my previous comment I omitted to say that late 64 cars had the full width dash and grille. Early 64 cars still used the small dash and grille .many years ago I was one of five individuals who formed the lotus Cortina register but now age and other business commitments means I'm no longer involved.rog. I Hear you Helen
    I had a 1965 and the 1st thing I did was concoct a “splash guard “ under the front CARBS hoping to avoid a fire coz of fuel a friend of mine recommended “DO Something or start crying now “ SO I did and never had a problem Only down side was a bit of faffing about to change Points gaps
    BUT WHAT A CAR In it’s day it was a racing car on the road

      Thanks for the info Paul. Not bad going that. You certainly like a challenge!! Some 40 years back i spotted a Messerschmitt KR200 in similar condition to how your Lotus was. The owner wasn't doing anything with it and i offered him good money to sell....but he stubbornly refused to part with it and was just left to rot away. Bloody crazy and very frustrating too.

      Bulletguy07 I painted one of those a few years back for someone.Very flimsy and fiddly to work on.Im also restoring a mk1 early 65 GT cortina. Was worse than this but now is painted and has a 150bhp pre crossflow engine waiting to go in it.
      When it's done I will put another video on

      Paul Chapman....yes i imagine it would be but back then i was also 40 years younger and well "into" my car tinkering! Thought nothing of crawling around under cars on concrete garage floors but now paid the penalty in my older years with worsening osteoarthritis....unable to even grip a bloody wrench or screwdriver. I can't even manage a basic oil change now and have to pay a Garage! My "thing" was always Mini's....owned lots of them from bog standard 850 thru to Coopers and Cooper 'S' but my most prized one was a 1964 Mk1 saloon the owner was about to scrap...and he let me have it for scrap money (£50!!). By that time they were rare as hens teeth, far more rare than Coopers, because unlike Coopers owners treated them as "just another Mini" so many of them soon went to the scrapyard. I sold it a few years after i restored it but often have regrets over parting with that particular Mini!
      A friend of mine once owned a totally original 1071 'S' in mint condition. Very unusual colour too....the normal white roof but body was Primrose Yellow. He sold it some years ago when he got chance to buy an original ex-works Mini Cooper S. Needed restoration but everything was there including documentation.

    This car had SERIOUS RUST it was trying very hard to return to the earth where it came from!
    IF this work was done by 'Classic Ford Restoration' a professional garage i hate to think of the cost! Probably now it is in better condition than when it was new.
    If i am correct Ford high performance engine's were based on standard engines with a fancy 16v head on top, ie the cosworth engine from the head down was a strenghtened 2ltr cortina block, same with the BDA escort engine kent block 16v head.

      Pretty sure the Mk1 cortina used 1200 and 1500 engines think the 1600 came later with Escorts and the 1600 kent pushrod engine was used in the Mk2 ( different block to the Escort 1600 sport/mexico was stronger more heavy duty the cortina 1600 ) . 1500 cortina are very sought after and command a high price if you can find one??

    • @barryphillips7327
      @barryphillips7327 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes after looking it up it is 1597cc it was an enlarged version of the 1499cc kent non cross engine, with the 16v lotus head of course.

    • @patrickbeard5657
      @patrickbeard5657 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      barry phillips A few corrections, the original Lotus Cortina was 1558cc and had a Lotus developed 2 valve per cylinder cross flow cylinder head. The power output was a very modest by today’s standard 105bhp there was an option to have special equipment cam’s fitted that raised the power to 115bhp, later a big valve cylinder head was developed that produced 126bhp but this was only fitted to the Lotus Elan Sprint and possibly the Europa.
