    Hello Richard... just heard this for the first time. You were saying that your sending according to the machine was not clean morse... well it was! I could understand it perfectly. I am an ex-army radio op and currently hold a ham A licence, and my preferred method of communication has always been CW. I have only ever used a hand key, never needed anything else.

    So, in your humble opinion.
    Is it better to start with a straight key?
    And/ore does it matter.
    Edit. = punctuation. Also autoincorrect.

      the app is morse code reader.... but I'm having a headache with it. I just got my technician and am using the LCWO site to learn code. As I go I give the letters a go with the MFJ-557 but it doesn't give me anything but T's. But holding my phone up to my computer as he's keying it comes out clear on the app but not when I'm using the key to practice. :/ I want to find a way to use the MFJ-557 and plug it into my computer for translation to see if I'm doing it right or not.... :( hopefully the app works for you

    You can use a jump wire and your iambic paddle becomes a sideswiper (or cootie). A cootie is electrically just a regular key on its side.
    It looks like the major defect in the MFJ557 is in the key contacts...Otherwise, it sounds usable....Looks fixable....

    Thank you, I really enjoyed the lesson. It makes me really want to get a license to transmit. That would be my tech . Is that little Elecraft good enough to comm. with the whole world and also in voice ?

      HF voice communication can be performed at QRP power levels with an excellent antenna, but it's far more of a challenge to be heard than using QRP power for CW communication.

    Why do I get the impression that you could cut a hacksaw blade into two pieces, file it down and stick them to a board with bubble gum and still send perfect code at 30 WPM? It is obvious that your love of Morse code has driven your meteoric rise in this art. Some guys (like myself) with decades of experience don't have the skills you do.
    Thanks for the videos -- and the inspiration! Keep it up!

      Haha, thanks for the kind words. I wish that were true, but I can't copy well at 30 wpm... yet. Keep up the practice, and when the big call for Morse code operators comes in the future we'll be there to stand in the gap... Spark gap, that is. :)
