  • A slideshow showing the construction of the Top Flite Spitfire Mk.IX kit. The model was completed in 2006. It was originally powered with a. O.S.91FS but later changed to a RCV130CD. Ultimately, it has been converted to electric power.

      Thank you!
I thought the color scheme a little more interesting than the other common Spitfire schemes.

You’d need a huge amount of patience to build this. Awesome job - well done.

Absolutely stunning, a great inspiration. I've got the TF Spitfire mkIX Gold which I'm starting in summer 2024 (UK) and will reference this video a lot. I've built a lot of balsa aircraft over the years but nothing on this level. Brolga, Aries, QB15, Ugly Stik, Hustler etc but they're all very simple in terms of detailed design.
I've subscribed and saved this video for reference, and will perhaps ask for some advice later down the track. Thanks a lot for uploading this beautiful video that depicts your build from start to finish. In a world full of ARF kits these days it's certainly great to see that people still enjoy possibly the most rewarding part of the RC hobby which is the build.
    Peace, and respect.

      Thank you!
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. It's been about 20 years since I built the Spitty but I'll do my best to give an answer.
I will suggest that you make the model as light as you possibly can. This kit builds heavy (over engineered) and will fly better if made lighter. Most of the problem lies in the wood supplied in the kit. If I were to do it over again, I would replace most all of the wood with a lighter grade especially with the balsa. If you intend on an electric motor, then I would suggest getting rid of all of the ply and replace with laminated balsa except for firewall and landing gear mounts.
      Good luck with your build!

@@BalsaAeroProjects That's a common theme I've noticed about this kit, the quality of the balsa sheeting and excess weight. I need to cut the weight slightly as I want to add picaxe or arduino controlled navigation lights so it will be a fine balance for sure. And I'm torn between electric and petrol simply because of the sound!
I'll be in touch closer to the time for finishing tips. Have never airbrushed before, only solarfilmed, so any resources you can recommend would be great. I'll document the build and video the maiden, in return for your kindness you can upload the video to this channel if you wish.

One of the better channels on airbrushing is Scale Model Workshop. He has a good series on airbrushing from types of airbrushes/mini-guns to techniques. I can upload a video on my own setup, but it will be at least a month before I could do it.
Please do document your build. It would great to see another TF build and include any deviations that you might incorporate.

@@BalsaAeroProjects Thanks mate, will check out SMW. Would be interested to see your setup as well.
I'll document the build then, and find a way to get it to you for your channel. Hopefully get you some extra views.
If you ever need 3D printed parts, or 3D models made, then fire a message and I'd be glad to help out.

You did a heck of a great job finishing that plane! Would have loved to see a video of your maiden flight, as I bought one of these TF kits in the classifieds of an RC website myself and intend to build it for electric power too. I'm gathering up the necessary parts for the project. It seems a lot of the electric retracts made in China today are being produced for much lighter foam Spitfires. If your retracts have held up well for you with the weight of this TFlite Spitfire, I'd appreciate if you could provide the source for where you obtained them so I may buy it.

The retracts for my model were pneumatics from Century Jet. You're probably aware that they are no longer in business.
It sounds like you know that this kit builds very heavy. Since your plan is ep, it will be in the model's best interest to lose as much of the ply in the kit and replace with balsa (laminated works well).
Good luck with your build! I hope to see it someday.
