If you like BIG fish then overhead reels Are the way to go. although spinning has come a long ways. it still not as strong as casting (drag stack too small). BUT...they are definitely more Versatile than Overhead. less backlash, casting into the winds, lighter as well, if you into throwing lighter lures and easiest to learn. Overhead good for cut/live bait, jigging, more line capacity for bigger fish runs. larger drag stack to prevent overheating. harder to learn due to backlash, can cast heavier lures a mile (if you into that stuff). I would say a combination of these 2 types are reel are the most effective way to fish. They just do certain things better than the other. imo if you are fishing for things under 50lbs. spinning is fine depending on the quality/brand of reel. if you are going for bigger fish like 50lb+ then get a casting/overhead. Another thing to consider is line twist. Spinning setups will eventually twist your line over time, this can compromise line strength. while overhead virtually has no line twist.

Just absolutely false. Bait casters have absolutely no advantage over spinning reels for catfish unless you want a line counter.

I have Okuma Avenger ABF 6000 bait runner Spinning reels on all my rods with 40-50 lb braid. I catch catfish, drum, carp, trout, and gar with 0 issues. Love the reels paired with my Mad Kat and Hellcat rods. Wouldn’t change a thing about my set-ups.

I've got spinning reels (5000 series) for my big catfish rigs and small bass light lure rigs (2500/3000 series). Much more economical than baitcaster reels. I've got four baitcaster reels for heavier bass fishing lures. 👍🇺🇸

Great info. I always use spinning reels 5000 to 8000. All my catfish rods have bsitfeeder reels. I just dont like baitcasters at all. I have not had any problems with them. Its frustrating to me when i see rods i might want to buy and they don't come in 2 piece spinning models. I have my own ideas to develop my own series of rods, but no funds to produce. I love 7' to 9' med heavy to heavy 2 piece models. My favorite is the ORIGINAL KING KAT rods. I use them for Salmon, tuna, and catfish. Oldies but goodies.

@@DieterMelhorn Hey Mr. Dieter, you and I and Butch should go fish for Catfishes one of these days. I like to use Danny King Punchbait. The catfish love it and I kind of like it too. If I get hungry, I'll scoop out a gob of it and snack on it. I've also snacked on cutbait (sushi) and nightcrawlers (live noodles). You two are gonna enjoy fishing with me, You might be taken aback by the horror show if I get the munchies, but we'll all have a good time.

I got 3 of the new okuma ceymar A baitfeeder spinning reels in the 6,000 size for catfish with 237 yards of 50 lb braid.
And 3 of the new okuma ceymar A baitfeeder spinning reels in the 500 size for panfish with 190 yards of 10 lb braid this season and I love them.
They are the first okuma baitfeeders that have carbon fiber drag washers instead of oil felt drag washers.
And I couldn't be more impressed with their performance honestly, I'm thinking about switching all my spinning reels to them at this point.

I use the barbie rod and reel combo made by shakespeare. It is less than 3' long and has a spincaster like your good old zebco. It can handle surprisingly big fish. My record is a massive 19" 3+ lb Channel Cat. I'm sure it has got to be the pond record for around here. One day when I go fish offshore, I hope to get me a 1,000lb black marlin with my barbie and become legendary.

I use 4000 sized reels for the catfish around here. The average fish is about 15 pounds. I got four over twenty pounds we don't have blues around here and no flatheads in the lake I fish.
I started using reels with baitclickers on them towards the end of the summer. I tie my rods to the rod rack. I used to have the whole setup go into the water and still be tied to the rack

I use open face spinning reels most of the time. Just never got into conventional reels, except for saltwater.
You did a really good job of breaking this down for us. As far as sizes size #4 or #3 is the average size I use now days. Oh, I will drop down to a #1 or a #2 when fishing for bait fish. Which makes me wonder what your favorite setup for cashing bait fish like bluegills or white pearch for example? I usually use a small Zebco combo like a Dock Demon. What do you suggest?

@ kind of honestly for where I live the cheap tiger spinning combos from Walmart for the most part are more than enough for 90 percent of the fishing I can do unless I fish the desmoins or one of the other big rivers that are an hour or more away your not catching anything over 20lbs very often out of any body of water near me aside from a very very rare occurrence and at that 10 is probably getting kind of rare your kind of lucky to get more than a 3lb fish most of the time 5lbs is a really good day it’s not so much the size of the fish ppl keep around here so much as how many ppl are fishing and that there keeping hordes of the small fish they don’t even let them grow to get big you’ll never see a trophy fish if it’s only ever eating size guys keep dozens at a time since Covid most places you can get to on foot are fished out

Idk what I do wrong, but I have 0 luck with spinning reels. I can even make bait casters work most the time without blowups (unless I'm trying to use super lite lures, and there is a lot of high wind gusts, but I can get a spinning reel to have line pop off and turn into 60 plus lines and about 400 knots 9 out of 10 times for some reason. I've got to the point I'd rather fish with a zebco bullet on a windy day for things like crappie to eat, and brim to turn into cut bait (not a fan of bass, and I use the big casting reels on catfish (and a ton of jug lines if I'm desperately hunting for whare they are hiding in the winter or something.)

All Penn spinning reels are made in China now. A better quality than those other two reels made in China. There is something that you didn't mention. You did address that the size number like 6000, 600 are the same size in general but also some spinning reels have a 60, which is the same as 600, 6,000.
I personally use Shimano spheros 8000 for catfishing. The 8000 size on Shimano is the size of most 6000 brands. Shimano spinning reels run a bit smaller cause of there better technology. Diawa the same. Always buy a superior reel, in the long run, it will last a life time.
