      Video didn’t even mention the sample from “The Stranger” at the end of Loop 3. So committed to sampling one song, only to jump completely to another song off the album. Daft Punk were masters of hiding samples from the same album in plain sight.

    No fucking way, I never connected the sample in High Fidelity to Billy Joel. And I'm only able to pick out that extra little EQ'd sample in Crescendolls now that you've pointed it out. This right here is how you really demonstrate a sample effectively, by actually making an attempt to reconstruct it from scratch using the original track. There was another video that I can't find anymore that did the same thing with not nearly as many songs as you did, and it was incredibly instructive. Kudos to you sir.

    • @McGuinty2
      @McGuinty2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The one thing that I haven't seen any video attempt yet is to take a crack at reconstructing Face To Face. Most videos just mention the Evil Woman sample and move on, and although I can kinda hear the timbres of ELO in there, I'm having an extremely hard time wrapping my brain around exactly how Thomas, Guy and Todd Edwards chopped that song up into what we hear on the track. Although, I finally found out that they also sampled Falling In Love by Surface and I can definitely hear clear snippets of that song in the mix, way more easily than with Evil Woman. If you could find the time and willpower to really dig into Face To Face the way you did with High Fidelity, I'm certain it would be extremely helpful to me to understand exactly what is going on in my favorite song from Discovery. Thanks for your hard work.

    i don't understand complaints about sampling. because in art everything is always inspired by other's work. Without this, already very very long, tradition none of it would exist. I think it is actually impoosible to track down the "real" originator of a tune or a riff, and even if you did manage to find that dead hobo that maybe nile rodgers ripped off (who the hell knows, do you actually know these guys? were you there? no!) who is to say that he wasn't inspired by a little piece of music he heard in a blues bar... If you take little snapshots, even a whole riff, and focus on it, melt it into a fucking awesomely produced housetrack, and are thus creating an own universe with charming little pieces of old vinyl, thats superfine and its so interesting to discover new music when you dive further into the libraries of classic songs that would otherwise never be revisited.. which is a hell of a lot of homework, which they should get credit for anyway because it is a genius universe they made. I BELIEVE THAT THE SHEER VASTNESS OF MUSIC HISTORY ITSELF IS THE JUSTIFICATION FOR REMIXING AND SAMPLING AS AN ARTFORM, THE ART HERE IS THE CHOICES OF MUSIC TO SAMPLE FROM YOU MAKE and of course how you produce them all together with your drum machines, fx etc. ;) any comebacks, still? cheers!

      I did the video a few weeks before the release of RAM, but there's nothing complicated behind Contact's sampling. They've taken two loops from "The Sherbs - We Ride Tonight" and did chopped samples from the Apollo missions 16 and 17

    They take small parts of songs and turn it into something epic. I wasnt ok with this at first because i thought they wrote everything. I mean they basically did. Anyone could come up with these small parts of songs. Edit: (I posted this comment before I knew much about sampling)

      Your disrespect for the original black funk and disco artists - many of who were great writers, musicians and artists in their own right - is palpable but all too typical of a myopic (and ignorant) Daft Punk fan. They sampled from entire songs. Sometimes creatively - sometimes not. The original artists, however, did not just write some random snippets. And if it was oh-so-easy to compose this music and "anyone" could do it then why didn't Daft Punk simply write it themselves, mhm? Face it - you're probably the typical Daft Punk fan who looks down on hip hop sampling but falls all over the 'art and craft' of sampling when *certain* people do it, eh? And you probably struggled to reconcile yourself that these two DJs do what every other DJ does - sample. The fact that some of their fans actually had the temerity to dream that a couple of young white French guys wrote these heavy black funk riffs and bass lines that sound like they came straight out of the seventies and eighties is pathetically ignorant. If you had a clue about black music you'd realise that they could *never* have written this. Clearly you can't even recognize whole genres if African-American music when you hear them. But then you probably think Jerry Lee Lewis invented rock 'n' roll. Even more idiotic is the idea that 'anyone' could have written this music. To repeat: Daft Punk sure as hell didn't write it and neither could you or I. Stop behaving as if black musicianship and culture has has no value or worth and there is no skill involved in making it unless a white DJ comes along and uses it. *Eyeroll*

      @thapoint09 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Did you even watch this video? They didn't sample "entire songs"; they took small parts and built off of them. If you were listening to one station playing High Fidelity and turned to another station that was in the middle of Just the Way You Are, you probably wouldn't even be able to tell that the former samples the latter.
      You're just like every other anti-sampling elitist. You're so fixated on the fact that something was sampled _at all_ that you don't consider how the sample was used, how _much_ of the sample was used, what was used, and when it was used.
      Furthermore, Daft Punk can and _have_ written original material before - sometimes in conjunction with sampling! Wow, it's almost as if using samples doesn't automatically discredit you as a musician.

    • @getwilly1

      You're one of the most ignorant people I've ever encountered on the Internet. I absolutely love Hip-Hop, I've been studying it for the past year, I live and breathe it. And you also completely misinterpreted what i said. The tiny snippets of songs that they take are just simple melodies, melodies that anybody could come up with if they tried, so therefore in my mind at the time, it quelled my idea of Daft Punk just stealing music, because they have good ears for good sounding melodies that can loop well too. Also, thank you for replying to this comment that I posted almost 3 years ago when I was 15 years old. A comment that you decided to waste your time replying to with preachy ignorant bullshit. Your post is filled with "you probably" this and "you probably just" that. Assumptions makes an ass out of both of us. Especially you, condescending babbler.
