Bach - Fantasia and fugue in A minor BWV 944 - Frankenberg | Netherlands Bach Society

- The Fantasia and Fugue in A minor, BWV 944 - performed here by harpsichordist Emmanuel Frankenberg for All of Bach - is an example of a work in which Bach leaves scope for the musician. Right from the start in the prelude - in this case a fantasia - only the chords are written out, with the annotation ‘arpeggio’ [a broken chord]. Here, Bach has set the harmonic progression, but the keyboard player has to make their own choices about the sort of arpeggio, the tempo and other improvisations on the series of chords.

This man's fingering technique is out of this world!
Love the Fantasia, short, but like a warm carpet for the fuge.
With Bach it’s not just the music, but the process. It’s a task, one of joy, to follow the composition through to fruition. As a bird comes home to nest, a river opens to the sea, an embrace tightens before a goodbye, so too the piece must live, end, and then echo within our spirit. Thanks NBS; it could be nothing, but it really is everything.
It’s not easy to follow such music with words but this was a lovely, poetic as well as poignant response.
👏🎼🤝🎶🙏⭐🌟🌟🌟🌟💙
I could not say more beautiful words than you did 🧡
Beautifully and appreciatively stated. Thank you.
And as my turd breaks the water’s surface, so too does my appreciation of Bach 💩🚽
Fantastic playing and interpretation on the "Phantasie & Fugue" . Very well recorded and balanced. You can hear the resonance of the Harpsichord without any recording artifacts. I was impressed by the different sound when manuals were changed. Very different tone, bravo to the person that voiced the Harpsichord - Brilliante!
A hit out of the ballpark already in the first few seconds!
I hope to hear more Bach harpsichord solos from Frankenberg.
Wonderful piece and playing. Guy deserves bigger crowd.
Thank you Netherlands Bach Society! As always, you guys do an outstanding job bringing it Bach to life with quality performances! You never disappoint!
What a complex and expressive fugue... and so well played!
Amazing playing. One of my favorite compositions by the Master Bach. Great work
Classical music is a repository of cultural richness. It reflects the historical and cultural contexts in which it was created, offering listeners a glimpse into the artistic and societal landscapes of different periods. Each era brings forth a unique musical language that contributes to the diversity of classical repertoire.
Heel mooi !
en heel stabiel, als een prachtig uitgespreid tapijt !
Stunning-thank you!
Wonderfully played🍃thank you
Beautiful, amazing piece and grat playing, thanks.
This instrument has a beautiful sound and was greatly played. Thanks for sharing !
Beautiful!
tolles Instrument, wunderbare Farbe😻schön gespielt.
I studied harpsichord back in the 70s and have never stopped listening. I’ve never heard this piece before and it’s quite amazing. Those progressions at about 3:15 are really interesting. I’m also impressed with the quality of the recording. You hear the resonance of the instrument very clearly, which is often a problem with harpsichord recordings, and the difference in the registration comes through quite clearly.Especially like the sound of the front 8. Wonderfully simple technique, hands close to the keys. Beautifully done.
I think that the problem with such recordings is the close miking, which doesn't allow the instrument to project its sound. If you see, in this video, the mics aren't that close, which gives this wonderful result.
@@mallorga1965 EXACTLY !!
@@mallorga1965 Agreed. The problem with miking from a distance is that you often don't get the resonance, hence the characterization that harpsichords "can't sustain" the sound. Or you get a lot of ambient noise from, for example, the air conditioning system, or a lot of reverb and echo. They got it just right here. I think the setting has a lot to do with it -- an empty church, no carpets on wood floors, just a few cushions on the pews. The instrument is wonderful as well, as well as the performer. I guess his name is Frankenberg? Would like to hear more from him.
@@gatesurfer No doubt the setting has a lot of impact when recording acoustic instruments. You're not only recording the instrument but its reflections too.
Emmanuel Frankenberg, truly talented musician. Music is just so clean, deep and organic.
Extraordinary music, extraordinary performer, extraordinary harpsichord, extraordinary sound recording
I find listening to this a really pleasant and moreish experience...
¡Bravo, Manolo!
Helder, prachtig.♥️
Bravo Manolo. Nice harpsichord too😉
Heel mooi
Amazin!!!
Que cosa tan linda. El registro sonoro es maravilloso. Gracias NBS. 🙂🤗
Such a long and difficult fugue subject ; it takes a genious like Bach to do it!
Enjoyable/10
What a sound…
👌

Superb playing - many thanks.
(Are the keys of that instrument dirty? - Surely not. Maybe they are just unbleached ivory?)
probably just ivory salvaged from another instrument. I have a 1908 Steinway with ivory keys and that's how they look. You can see the grain.
It actually bothers me a little bit to play on a relatively new piano with shiny white plastic keys. My brain subconsciously seems to be telling me they're going to be slippery.
Harpsichord keys are generally bone, not ivory. That's the natural appearance and colour.
To @@gatesurfer and @levezinet:
This does not look like a grain pattern. I look after one particular instrument where the keys are definitely yellow, and you can see the grain pattern - like wood - in the ivory, and it does look attractive. But in that case, the colouring is on all the keys - one end to the other.
It's a pity I cannot post an image with this reply. Taking a screenshot at 1.54 and enlarging it certainly seems to show grubby marks on the keys at the top of the keyboard (eg. darker marks on the edges of the key fronts, and lighter in the middle, where the finger might be expected to wear off the dirt.)
I cannot imagine that this would be so. Surely, if you knew that a recording was to be made, you would clean the keys.
But if it *is* staining of some kind, it is rather unusual.
And agree, of course, that ivory keys are much more pleasant to the touch than the plastic substitute.
@@levezinetSee my reply to gatesurfrer and yourself.
I am aware of unbleached ivory (and bone, for that matter) and this is something else.
The man is not afraid of thumbs on black keys.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
where is the mic? very nice sound catching! I love it!
At about 2.20 there's a long shot and you can see the boom holding the mics.
@@manjacovus5342 thank you!
I never encountered a Nico van der Waals harpsichord, and I'm only aware of the luthier Nico van der Waals. Did he also built harpsichords?
Yes he did :)
Handel's been real quiet since this one dropped.
BEAUTIFUL HARPSICHORD SOUND AND PLAYING ALL GREAT. BUT THE PEACOCK BLUE BILLOUS COLOR IS ENOUG TO SEND ME BACK TO THE SHOP FOR A REPAINT JOB. ASAP
Музыка никогда не умрёт, потому что учредил ЕЁ БОГ! Очень красиво, спасибо!
very bussin, though I slightly prefer the g minor for organ
Волшебно! Кажется, что в дверь скоро войдёт Бах.
I would have preferred if he hadn't put a Picardy third at the end.
Bach did not write horizontal feelingless music
Hmm. Irgendwann wird‘s auch nur mehr nerviges Geklimper. Vor allem das Cembalo ohne die Möglichkeit der klaren Melodieführung macht das (sinnerfassende) Zuhören echt schwer.
Somebody explain to me, why the player stall the continuity of the rythm in the fugue? 1:28 by example... 1:45 2:36 etc. By the way the "Fantasia" it's a f**king University PhD of music, after hear that you have no excuses to be a bad composer.
He starts to play a new sequence there. It's like taking a breath before continuing to run. It's also called "artistic license".
Too much license for my taste I can't speak for Bach's taste @@RhondaBranneky Now I'm want to erase my rudeness because your very polite answer, thank you!
Don’t worry about it. Emmanuel is the son of colleagues of mine. He might yet again change his interpretation as we all do when playing Bach at different times in our lives.
